EPA Signs Memorandum of Understanding with Georgia Institute of Technology

On Monday August 1, 2016, the Georgia Institute of Technology and the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) entered into a partnership to enhance environmental policy work and offer internship opportunities for Georgia Tech students interested in environmental careers. The Memorandum of Understanding (MOU) formalizes a long-standing collaboration.

The MOU expresses the partners’ intentions to strengthen ties with the aim to enhance research, knowledge exchange, stakeholder engagement, career development, and leadership in environmental sciences and engineering, and policy research.

“The Memorandum provides a valuable framework for collaborations for the betterment of the environment by advancing dialogue among stakeholders regarding the environment, energy, and climate change,” said Kaye Husbands Fealing, chair of the School of Public Policy in Georgia Tech’s Ivan Allen College of Liberal Arts. Fealing and public policy professor Marilyn A. Brown led formation of the agreement and will implement and manage it on behalf of Georgia Tech.

The MOU was signed by Georgia Tech by President G.P. “Bud” Peterson and G. Alan Farmer, division director of EPA Regional Resource Conservation and Restoration.

“Georgia Tech has had a fruitful relationship with the EPA which has expressed its confidence in the quality of our work by providing significant research funds,” said G.P. “Bud” Peterson, president of the Georgia Institute of Technology.

Heather McTeer Toney, Regional Administrator for the EPA said, “Institutions like Georgia Tech are an incredible asset, because of the skilled resources at their disposal. The signing of this MOU further strengthens educational and environmental ties and provides a forum for discussing emerging environmental issues and interest in environmental careers with future leaders.”

The MOU will also help highlight research on climate change at Georgia Tech and grow distribution of its “Research Horizons” magazine and will help the EPA attract a diverse workforce.
