Minjung Maing is Assistant Professor at Georgia Institute of Technology School of Architecture teaching in core BS Arch and M Arch courses including design studios, as well as specialized courses in the High Performance Building post-professional degree program. Her research interests are in building envelope systems, materials, digital fabrication techniques, and construction methodologies to test and prototype building elements that realize target performance levels. She is one of the three faculty members heading the Digital Fabrication Lab (DFL) with a mission of collaboratively working with industry professionals and graduate students in jointly addressing practical contemporary issues in the assembly of building components.
She has 10 years of industry experience ranging from architecture, structural engineering, and building technology developing specialization on building envelope performance, and integration of design, testing, and construction processes toward a holistic design approach. Her professional work involves analysis, design and construction of standard and custom curtain wall systems and various building envelope cladding systems consisting of a wide spectrum of materials. She is a registered professional engineer in California as well as a U.S. Green Building Council Leadership (USGBC) in Energy and Environmental Design (LEED) Accredited Professional and an American Institute of Architects (AIA) Associate Member.

Educational Background

Master of Architecture, Massachusetts Institute of Technology
Master of Science in Civil Engineering Structural Mechanics, Stanford University

Fields

Building Envelope Performance and Assembly;

Performance and Digital Mock-up and Testing;

Digital Fabrication, Prototyping and Assembly;

Skins Design Studio with Emerging Materials

Comprehensive Design Studio

      <value>
Research Ambitions
The need to better understand building performance and building envelope design is critical to strive for a sustainable environment and ultimately for humanity. My research agenda is to further study these two areas to formulate design strategies for high performing building envelopes with new efficient applications of emerging and existing materials. With the current fragmentation of the building industry clashing with the homogenizing platform of BIM, the role of architecture needs to extend into specialty areas whilst maintaining the fundamental design theory and representation. I am interested in connecting my research with teaching, to embed knowledge into students on methodologies in design, digital fabrication and craft of building in performance-based design.

Research Groups/Labs
Faculty member of Master of Science with concentration in High Performance Building
Faculty member of Digital Fabrication La
</value>
