This course is an introduction to common, readily available indicators of research impact as a means of source validation. This includes traditional measures such as journal impact and article metrics, and how these are calculated in sources such as Journal Citation Reports (JCR) and Google Scholar. It is not meant to establish a standard of success with research using only these indicators.

The course also covers emerging metrics/altmetrics, researcher profiles and open access scholarship.

Artist: Dylan Cawthorne 

Dylan Cawthorne is an aerospace and drone engineer, applied ethicist, artist, activist, and former Associate Professor at the Drone Center at the University of Southern Denmark in Odense. He now consults through his company Dylan Cawthorne Consulting (Danish CVR Number 45718344). His goal is to make the world a better place using ethics, technology, activism, and art. He is a champion for the use of ethics and human values in engineering, and an activist engineer.  His academic area of expertise is using value sensitive design methods and ethical principles to design and build prototype drones, as documented in new book The Ethics of Drone Design. These drones are used in humanitarian and public healthcare contexts in Denmark, Africa, and beyond. He is interested in utilizing art, craft, and creativity to enhance engineering - and engineering to inform art.  A common theme in his work is de-centralized technologies and democratic, grassroots organizations and methods. Dylan won the Inspiration Prize from the University of Southern Denmark for his work with the United Nations Sustainable Development goals, and a Peace Rose from the pacifist organization “Never More War”.  

Researcher: Jud Ready 

W. Jud Ready is the executive director of the Space Research Institute. Prior to this role, he served as associate director of external engagement for the Georgia Tech Institute for Matter and Systems and director of the Georgia Tech Center for Space Technology and Research. He has also been an adjunct professor in the School of Materials Science and Engineering at Georgia Tech and a principal research engineer on the research faculty of Georgia Tech Research Institute (GTRI) for over a dozen years. Prior to joining the Georgia Tech faculty, he worked for a major military contractor (General Dynamics) as well as in small business (MicroCoating Technologies). He has served as PI or co-PI for grants totaling ~$17M awarded by the Army, Navy, Air Force, DARPA, NASA, NSF, NIST, industry, charitable foundations and the States of Georgia and Florida. His current research focuses primarily on energy, aerospace, nanomaterial applications, and electronics reliability.

Centennial Summer: Georgia Tech’s Olympic Legacy exhibition will be open from Feb. 28 through mid-November from 9 a.m. to 6 p.m. every day in the Library's Exhibit Gallery, located on the first floor of Price Gilbert. 

Thirty years ago, Atlanta welcomed the world for the Centennial Olympic Games, a 17-day event that transformed the city and Georgia Tech’s campus. The Games brought unprecedented urban renewal and infrastructure projects, transforming Atlanta into a global stage. At the heart of this transformation was Georgia Tech. Serving as the Olympic Village and hosting several venues, Georgia Tech renovated Alexander Memorial Coliseum and added seven new dorms, the North Avenue Apartments, the Campanile, and a new pool that became the Campus Recreation Center, redefining the student experience for generations to come.  

We invite the entire Georgia Tech community to relive these Olympic memories and explore their legacy at the opening of the Library’s newest exhibit, Centennial Summer: Georgia Tech’s Olympic Legacy, showcasing the lasting impact of the 1996 Games through photographs, artifacts, and stories.

The presenter will demonstrate how to conduct preliminary patent searches using publicly accessible patent tools. Attendees will have an opportunity to participate in hands-on learning activities.

Gain familiarity with some of the tools for measuring scholarship and outputs of published research​ in this helpful workshop. This course is an introduction to common, readily available indicators of research impact as a means of source validation. This includes traditional measures such as journal impact and article metrics, and how these are calculated in sources such as Journal Citation Reports (JCR) and Google Scholar. It is not meant to establish a standard of success with research using only these indicators.

The course also covers emerging metrics/altmetrics, researcher profiles and open access scholarship.

EndNote 2025 software is available to the Georgia Tech community, as part of your Georgia Tech Technology Fee.

At the end of this session you will be able to add references to EndNote from databases and online sources, manage references and PDFs in EndNote, and use Cite While You Write to add citations from EndNote to MS Word documents.

No prior experience with EndNote required.

Take a break and relax with registered therapy dogs from CAREing Paws! Volunteers will be at the Library to offer the community a chance to spend relaxing downtime with furry friends. Join the Georgia Tech Library in person Wednesday, Oct. 15 in Crosland Tower's Second Floor Classroom from 11 a.m. to 12:30 p.m. for our Code and Create: Intro to User Design in Python workshop. 

This event led by Jason Lott, Managing Attorney for Trademarks Customer Outreach at the United States Patents and Trademarks Office (USPTO), will include a discussion about what all entrepreneurs, small businesses, and start-ups should know about trademarks. We will discuss what trademarks are, the benefits of federal trademark registration, and the basics of the registration process. 

Participants will also learn why it’s so important for any new business to select a trademark that is both federally registrable and legally protectable. Attendees will close out the discussion with a question-and-answer session and direct you to free resources from the USPTO.

• Difference between TM, SM, and ®;
• Importance of selecting a strong trademark;
• Importance of conducting a clearance searching before filing;
• Fundamentals of the federal trademark application requirements; and

He also presents to experienced practitioners on advanced trademark topics, providing them the tools and expertise to better serve their clients. Jason began his career at the USPTO in 2000 as a trademark examining attorney.

Our panel of student guests will share their experiences using generative AI tools for creative applications, discuss how they have applied these tools in their coursework, highlight the challenges and insights they've gained, and provide real-world examples. We will compare the functionalities of Adobe Firefly, Adobe Express, and Microsoft Copilot, offering insights on how students can leverage each platform to enhance their creative ideas in coursework.

This session will cover a range of applications for AI tools, including streamlining ideation, creating image-based narratives, developing research and study aides, and storyboarding for video and audio projects. We will also conduct a hands-on design activity to craft effective visual prompts. Additionally, we will discuss frameworks for evaluating AI outputs and explore the ethical considerations associated with these tools.

Led by Intellectual Property Attorney John Lunsford, this seminar explores the multifaceted role of AI in the patent ecosystem. With its rapid advancement, artificial intelligence (AI) is increasingly used in intellectual property processes and is raising complex questions and challenges. 

Key topics covered in the session include patentability of AI-generated inventions, AI tools in patent landscape analysis, and utilizing AI tools for drafting patent applications. 

This seminar aims to promote a better understanding of the impact of AI on the patent landscape.

ABOUT JOHN LUNSFORD
John Lunsford is an intellectual property (IP) attorney with more than a decade of experience. Prior to practicing law, Lunsford worked for 12 years as a professional software developer. He has developed applications that utilize machine learning for natural language processing, semantic indexing, error correction, record de-duplication, facial recognition, and real-time analytics. Since passing the bar exam in 2015, Lunsford has practiced IP law, with a special focus on patent law and AI/Machine Learning (ML)-related inventions. 

He is currently employed as in-house counsel by F5, Inc. At F5, in addition to advising the company on IP-related matters, Lunsford leads an initiative to leverage AI to improve the efficiency of the company’s legal department. As a part of this initiative, he has developed software that uses transformer models to semantically search patent portfolios and to summarize inventions. In addition, he has developed custom AI agents to answer questions about company policies and he has also used large reasoning models to assist in patent drafting. Lunsford has given presentations on understanding artificial intelligence and machine learning to audiences of both software developers and legal professionals.

To get started, just stop at the Clough CORE Desk on the second floor outside Kaldi’s Coffee. There you’ll find out the participants and get your trick-or-treat card. If you visit every unit on the card, you receive a free t-shirt provided by the Office Of Undergraduate Education and Student Success. 

Go door to door at the various services and offices at Clough to learn what each unit does, what they offer, and how you can benefit from the help they give. And of course there will be candy! Costumes are not required -- but definitely encouraged.
