556581 news 1469784996 1475896932 <![CDATA[This badminton academy in a favela will give you hope for the Rio Olympics]]> Sebastio de Oliveira founded the Miratus badminton school in a favela called Chacrinha in Brazil. Favelas are low-income communities that are home to almost a quarter of Rio de Janeiro‘s population. De Oliveira’s goal is to help the children in the community stay off the streets and away from drugs and violence. In 2010, Miratus secured some of its funding from an American non-profit group called Rise Up & Care run by Kirk Bowman, a professor in soccer and global politics at Georgia Tech, and Jon Wilcox, a banker from Orange Country California. Rise Up & Care works to put money into established projects in developing communities worldwide.
