Ph.D. Proposal Oral Exam - Cen Lin

Title: Signal Transmission and Processing for Millimeter-wave and Terahertz Communications

Committee:

Dr. Li, Advisor

Dr. Akyildiz, Chair

Dr. Weitnauer

Abstract: The objective of the proposed research is to provide a design guide on signal transmission and processing for millimeter-wave (mmWave) and Terahertz (THz) communications. Specifically, the higher-mmWave and THz bands, i.e., over 60 GHz, are investigated. Emerging communications over these new frequency bands with enormous bandwidth is a promising revolution for next-generation wireless systems. First, the difference between the higher-mmWave and THz bands and their lower-frequency counterparts is clarified. Then, an array-of-subarray architecture is designed to capture mmWave and THz channels while respect the nature of circuit hardware. Furthermore, fundamentals and performance of the array-of-subarray system for single-user communications are studied. Last but not least, a distance-aware multi-carrier transmission strategy is developed for multi-user wideband communications. As part of the proposed work, the strategies for beam training and channel estimation will be studied. Also, the relay-assisted transmission will be investigated to improve the connectivity and robustness of the system.
