Internet (PI) opens many more options to deliver goods to the end destination, thanks to interconnected services. To exploit such opportunities, routing algorithms must be developed at different levels to make the PI work. In this lecture, the levels will be defined and results obtained will be compared to traditional dedicated solutions. Two main point of views will be distinguished: the shipper (how to specify routing request) and the services provider (how to publish services and make agreements). The main PI principles will be presented as well as their impacts on algorithms, data requirements and performance. Initial results show the potential, but also uncover many research opportunities for services providers to develop new services and shippers to operate their supply chain with the PI.

ABOUT THE SPEAKER

Eric Ballot is full professor of supply chain management and industrial engineering at Mines ParisTech and the director of the Management Science lab. He is the head professor of the industrial management and supply chain program. He was a visiting scholar at the MIT Sloan School of management in 2007 and a visiting professor at HongKong University since 2015. He serves a board member of several institutions and is an accredited expert by Appeal Court of Paris since 2002. Georgia Tech Stewart School of Industrial and Systems Engineering, Fortna, and Kurt Salmon.

Event Description

The global logistics system is not sustainable from an economic, environmental or social perspective. Re-thinking logistics is a grand challenge as big as the information technology grand challenge that resulted in the (digital) Internet. It is proposed that in order to meet the logistics sustainability grand challenge, our logistics systems will evolve towards a Physical Internet. The merits and challenges of implementing the vision will be presented from three viewpoints and illustrated through demonstrations in the Physical Internet Center.

Panelists:

Benoit Montreuil, PhD, Georgia Tech Stewart School of Industrial and Systems Engineering

Russ Meller, Fortna

Bill Loftis, Kurt Salmon

Event Details

Where: Georgia Tech Stewart School of Industrial & Systems Engineering/Supply Chain & Logistics Institute (ISyE, 755 Ferst Drive, N.W.
