<![CDATA[Teaching with Technology Spotlight]]>27251Create Open Educational Resources for Biology: Making Learning Accessible, Affordable, Engaging, and Effective
Invited Speakers: Chrissy Spencer, Jung Choi, and Shana Kerr
At Georgia Tech, Introductory Biology courses, such as BIOL-1510, are typically taught in 50-250 seat flipped lecture format. Until recently, BIOL-1510 required a traditional textbook and subscription to an on-line homework system, Mastering Biology, at a high personal cost per student. Beginning in Fall 2015, the instructors replaced the textbook for BIOL-1510 with an open source collection of instructor-created written content and instructor-curated video materials.
Join us in this one-hour Teaching with Technology Spotlight session to find out about the process, the product, and the evidence that shows student learning remains effective. Come with questions and participate in a discussion on how you might implement these ideas in your own course.
]]><![CDATA[Avoiding the CIOS Surprise: Creating an Effective Learning Environment]]>28511 The Course Instructor Opinion Survey (CIOS) is an important tool that instructors use to receive feedback about their teaching effectiveness. Unfortunately, the feedback comes after the class is over, too late for instructors to adjust their teaching approach and improve the learning environment for their students. In this workshop, we will consider how what we know about how students evaluate course and instructor effectiveness can be used to make adjustments in our teaching choices. In addition, we will explore opportunities to uncover what students are thinking earlier in the semester when you still have time to adjust the course.

]]><![CDATA[The Integration of Teaching, Learning and Assessment: A Design-Based Approach]]>27276 As part of the Commission on Creating the Next in Education Speaker Series, Dr. Jim Pellegrino will present "The Integration of Teaching, Learning and Assessment: A Design-Based Approach."
Presentation Summary: This presentation will focus on a design-based approach to the integration of teaching, learning and assessment drawing upon ideas and principles derived from National Research Council Reports such as How People Learn (2000), Knowing What Students Know (2001), and Education for Life and Work (2013).The work of redesigning the College Board’s Advanced Placement courses in Biology, Chemistry and Physics will be used to illustrate such an approach to the application of critical principles about learning, instruction and assessment. The presentation will also consider the interpersonal and intrapersonal dimensions of competence that, along with the cognitive dimension, are critical to success in education, the workforce, and adult life.
About the speaker: James W. Pellegrino is co-director of Learning Sciences Research Institute, Liberal Arts and Sciences Distinguished Professor, and Distinguished Professor of Education at the University of Illinois at Chicago. His unique blend of expertise -- which combines knowledge of cognitive science, psychometrics, educational technology, instructional practice and educational policy -- has led to appointment as head of several National Academy of Science/National Research Council study committees. Sometimes this feedback tells us what we don’t want to hear: that students aren’t responding well, that they need something different in order to meet the goals we’ve set for them. In this session, we will hear from three Georgia Tech faculty members who have done the hard work of taking this feedback seriously, transforming their approach to teaching, and measurably helped improve their students’ teaching as a result.

This year's event will focus on the processes involved in becoming critically reflective about our teaching.
Our featured speaker this year is Dr. Stephen D. Brookfield. Dr. Brookfield is Distinguished Professor at the University of St. Thomas in Minnesota. He has written widely on the topics of adult education, critical thinking, and teaching and has received numerous awards for his books, including the Cyril O. Houle World Award for Literature in Adult Education and the Imogene E. Okes Award for Outstanding Research in Adult Education.
Dr. Brookfield will lead GTREET participants in a discussion of how to reframe our teaching by becoming critically reflective about teaching and using critical reflection as a tool for ongoing personal and professional development, and ways to develop students as critical thinkers.
