Bio: Lars Ruthotto is a Professor in the Departments of Mathematics and Computer Science at Emory University, where he is a member of the Scientific Computing Group and directs the Emory REU/RET Site for Computational Mathematics for Data Science. He earned his PhD in Mathematics from the University of Muenster in 2012 and was a postdoc at the University of British Columbia before joining Emory. His research develops computational methods at the interface of scientific computing, optimization, machine learning, and inverse problems, with recent emphasis on generative modeling, high-dimensional partial differential equations, and stochastic optimal control. He is a recipient of the NSF CAREER Award and serves as a Section Editor for the SIAM Journal on Scientific Computing.

Hello everyone! This Friday, we have invited Dr. Chuan Huang, faculty at Emory and Georgia Tech, join us to share a message titled: “Welcome to Terminus… The end or the beginning?”

Atlanta was once named Terminus — the “end of the line.” The city was destroyed during the Civil War and rebuilt from the ashes, adopting Resurgens — “rising again” — as its motto.

In a similar way, the Gospel tells us that Terminus is not the end of the story. You may have thought you came to Atlanta simply for school or work, but perhaps God also brought you here to transform your life.

• We will meet on campus at 1:00 PM and carpool to Amicalola Falls (about 1.5 hours away).
• If you RSVP, you’ll be added to a carpooling sheet to help coordinate rides. You’re also welcome to arrange your own transportation and meet us directly at the trailhead.
• We expect to arrive at the park around 2:30 PM.

The H. Milton Stewart School of Industrial and Systems Engineering at Georgia Institute of Technology is pleased to welcome you to Atlanta, Georgia for Georgia Statistics Day 2026.

Georgia Statistics Day is an annual event that promotes interdisciplinary statistics research across the University of Georgia, the Georgia Institute of Technology, and Emory University, with the venue rotating among the participating institutions. The 2026 event will feature a keynote lecture, two semi-plenary lectures, parallel research sessions, a student poster session, and ample opportunity for exchange between academia and industry.

We are honored to have Prof. Jianqing Fan, Frederick L. Moore ’18 Professor of Finance and Professor of Statistics, Machine Learning, and Operations Research and Financial Engineering at Princeton University, as our keynote speaker. The semi-plenary speakers are Prof. Sivaraman Balakrishnan from Carnegie Mellon University and Prof. Mladen Kolar from the University of Southern California.

This one-day workshop brings together faculty, students, and industry researchers from across Georgia and the Southeast for invited talks, interdisciplinary exchange, mentoring, and networking. Registration and poster submissions are open through September 28, 2026.

Artificial intelligence may feel digital and invisible, but the systems powering it have a very real physical footprint. Dive into the infrastructure behind AI — from data centers and energy consumption to environmental and societal impacts — and what the rapid growth of AI means for the future of our digital society.

What does creativity mean when machines can generate images, music, writing, and other forms of creative work? Explore how artificial intelligence is reshaping creative industries, changing the relationship between technology and human expression, and raising new questions around authorship, originality, labor, and the future of creative work.

As artificial intelligence becomes increasingly capable of conversation, companionship, and emotional responsiveness, what happens to our understanding of human connection? Unpack AI, empathy, intimacy, and relationships while considering what it means to form meaningful connections in an increasingly AI-mediated world.

How is artificial intelligence changing the way knowledge is created? Examine AI's growing role in academic research, including how researchers use emerging tools to accelerate discovery, approach complex questions, and navigate the ethical and practical implications of AI-assisted scholarship.

The goal of the National Safety Council's DDC is to provide drivers with knowledge and safe driving techniques to prevent accidents and violations. This course focuses on accident prevention through hazard recognition and application of accident-avoidance techniques. In addition, the course addresses common driving violations that result in accidents and how to change driving habits to eliminate moving violations.

Throughout the 6-hour course, participants learn how to recognize both potential and immediate hazards, how to avoid accidents in a variety of driving conditions and how to choose safe and legal driving behaviors. The emphasis is on identifying and choosing safe and legal behind-the-wheel behaviors and actions.

In order to attend this course you must have a valid state driver license.

You are entitled to a discount on your auto insurance in Georgia after the completion of this course.

Who Should Attend?:

Accessibility requirements for research articles, dissertations, and teaching materials are becoming more rigorous — and it's not optional anymore. The European Accessibility Act (EAA) took effect in June 2025. The U.S. ADA Title II update begins initial compliance for larger entities in April 2027. And publishers are introducing their own accessible publishing guidelines.

For many institutions, meeting these standards has meant expensive proprietary software or hours of manual document tagging. That's starting to change.

In this session, we'll explore how LaTeX — starting with TeX Live 2025 and on — enables automatic PDF tagging, giving authors a faster, more affordable path to accessible documents.

Do I have to run? Definitely not, most participants choose to walk and go through the course just for the fun and tradition of it!

When should I arrive if I am racing to win and want to run in the first heat? Around 5:45 am to beat the crowd!

When does check-in end? Check in ends at 6:20 am, and the race starts promptly at 6:30 am!

Park(ing) Day is a global movement that reimagines what the physical environment could look and feel like in a less auto-centric world. Surface parking lots, parking decks, personal driveways, and on-street parking deeply alter the human experience in urban areas and can make said spaces more engaging. On Park(ing) Day, organizations around the world "take over" public parking by paying the meter, but instead of parking a car, they set up activities and public installations such as gardens, dining spaces, and art exhibits to show passers-by how much more we could be interacting with the built environment if we didn't reserve so much space for parking!

Park(ing) Day will be located in Tech Square on Friday, September 18th, from 10 am-4 pm. Join us to take back our public spaces!

Please join us in helping clean up the garden by weeding. Gloves will be supplied, but please wear close-toed shoes and bring reusable water bottle!
