Departmental goals and expectations are a great place to start. Where to find lunch and how to collect wages are also important subjects to cover. But that’s just the beginning of a successful career.

“To thrive in our community, new hires must be prepared to exercise sound ethical judgment, act with civility in the workplace, and take individual responsibility for the Institute’s policies and legal obligations,” said Travis Waugh, instructional technologist for Human Resources. “These are among the core expectations of all Georgia Tech employees, and they are just as vital to the Institute’s long-term success as any professional skill or competency.”

To ensure these needs are met, last fall, Human Resources introduced a New Hire Learning and Compliance program for all onboarding employees.

This new program merges the Institute’s legal training mandates, employment policies, and timely topics impacting higher education into a single, convenient format that new hires can access and complete online. The full program takes approximately six hours to complete and covers:

Ethical decision-making.

Workplace conduct.

Title IX and anti-harassment.

Cybersecurity.

Conflicts of interest.

The Georgia Tech Policy Library — including the process by which new policies are written, reviewed, and implemented.

All new employees are automatically enrolled within their first week and receive an email with instructions on how to complete the program.

Managers should allocate time for their direct reports to complete the online program within their first 30 days. Managers are also encouraged to engage their new employees in a discussion of the program, underscoring their personal commitment to the policies and principles the program has discussed.

Human Resources revitalized its compliance approach to demonstrate a better way to manage risk and redefine its collective expectations of how genuinely impactful a compliance training program can be. By providing newly hired employees with a solid ethics and compliance foundation, the New Hire Learning and Compliance program is enabling other exciting initiatives at the Institute. For example, Georgia Tech’s annual Integrity and Compliance Campaign, which begins March 7 and ends April 6, will be streamlined this year to focus on real-life opportunities for meaningful employee learning and behavior change.

To learn more about the New Hire Learning and Compliance program, contact Travis Waugh at travis.waugh@ohr.gatech.edu.

<status>1</status> <created>1517585971</created> <gmt_created>2018-02-02 15:39:31</gmt_created> <changed>1517586075</changed> <gmt_changed>2018-02-02 15:41:15</gmt_changed> <promote>0</promote> <sticky>0</sticky> <teaser>Georgia Tech Human Resources (GTHR) recently introduced a New Hire Learning and Compliance program for all onboarding employees. </teaser> <type>news</type> <sentence>Georgia Tech Human Resources (GTHR) recently introduced a New Hire Learning and Compliance program for all onboarding employees. </sentence>

Georgia Tech Human Resources (GTHR) recently introduced a New Hire Learning and Compliance program for all onboarding employees.

 <dateline>2018-02-02T00:00:00-05:00</dateline> <iso_dateline>2018-02-02T00:00:00-05:00</iso_dateline> <gmt_dateline>2018-02-02 00:00:00</gmt_dateline>

 <sidebar></sidebar>

 <location></location> <contact>

Travis N. Or maybe you are searching for a way to actually follow through on those New Year’s Resolutions (Oh hello, February!). Either way, here is an incentive that promises to give your intentions a boost:

The University System of Georgia (USG) is introducing a new wellness initiative designed to reward employees for taking charge of their health and well-being.

As a member of the USG, Georgia Tech employees and spouses covered under a USG healthcare plan will have the opportunity to partake in a free incentive program that rewards you financially. The program begins March 1.

By completing and tracking various USG health and wellness activities, you and your spouse can each earn up to $100.

In days to come, all Georgia Tech employees enrolled in a USG healthcare plan will receive information (email and a mailed brochure) outlining the different ways to participate.

Here’s a snapshot of how the program will work:

Learn more about your well-being
Through the OneUSG – Connect Well-being portal, you will complete a health assessment — a short questionnaire about your well-being — to find your strengths and better understand where you can improve.

Choose focus areas and healthy activities
In the same portal, search for topics and programs that most interest you. For example, choose from tracking your daily healthy habits, participating in financial or health coaching, or joining community events.

Earn well-being credit
As you complete activities, you and your benefits-enrolled spouse can each earn up to $100 as a well-being credit for participating with USG Well-being programs.

All activities must be completed by Sept. 30, 2018, to earn your well-being credit.

The well-being credit is only available to employees and spouses covered on a USG healthcare plan and will be paid in November 2018. If employment ends prior to the payment of the well-being credit, the reward will be forfeited.

USG has partnered with RedBrick Health to provide some well-being services. Beginning Dec. 11, Georgia Tech will begin implementing the CAR among its staff.

“The CAR process provides an opportunity for employees to provide input on how we can improve administrative processes to enhance our ability to deliver on our teaching, research and service mission,” said President G.P. “Bud” Peterson.

When this systemwide initiative was announced last spring, Chancellor Wrigley stated that the project would be focused on creating efficiencies, streamlining processes, and finding ways to more effectively utilize USG resources. The USG is working with Huron Consulting to perform this review.

Administrative functions across the USG have been identified, and staff within each function will be selected to participate in a series of reviews as detailed below. Because the CAR initiative will focus only on nonteaching activities and roles, faculty will generally not be involved in the process.

Opportunity Identification Survey

Starting next week, an Opportunity Identification Survey will be conducted with supervisors, managers, and select groups — approximately 1,100 individuals. The goal of the Opportunity Identification Survey is to collect information on functions and processes that work well and those that present an opportunity for improved administrative effectiveness, efficiency, and best practices.

The Opportunity Identification Survey is voluntary and should take 15 minutes to complete.

An email will be sent on Dec. 11 to those who have been selected to participate in the survey. The survey is open from Dec. 11 to 20.

Focus Groups and Interviews

In support of the Opportunity Identification Survey, Huron Consulting will conduct on-site focus groups and interviews beginning Jan. 8, 2018.

Activity Assessment

In mid-January, approximately 3,600 staff employees at Tech will be asked to participate in the Activity Assessment to better understand how resources are allocated to perform the various administrative functions.

Those selected to participate should expect to receive an email on Jan. 16, 2018, with more details related to the assessment. The assessment is open from Jan. 16 to 30.

Participation in the assessment is mandatory for the selected individuals and should take, on average, 30 minutes to complete. In addition, supervisors and managers will be asked to review and validate the assessment submissions between Feb. 5 and Feb. 13, 2018.

Next Steps

Huron Consulting will prepare a draft report containing key findings and recommendations to deliver to Georgia Tech’s leadership, as well as the USG, in Spring 2018. A final report will be generated once all 28 institutions have completed this process in 2019.

Visit the USG Comprehensive Administrative Review website for more information on the systemwide project. Questions about Georgia Tech’s participation in this process may be forwarded to askcar@gatech.edu.

<status>1</status> <created>1512587262</created> <gmt_created>2017-12-06 19:07:42</gmt_created> <changed>1513005264</changed> <gmt_changed>2017-12-11 15:14:24</gmt_changed> <promote>0</promote> <sticky>0</sticky> <teaser>Beginning Dec. 11, staff at Georgia Tech will be asked to participate in USG initiative.</teaser> <type>news</type> <sentence>Beginning Dec. 11, staff at Georgia Tech will be asked to participate in USG initiative.</sentence>

As recently announced by Chancellor Steve Wrigley, all colleges and universities in the University System of Georgia (USG), as well as the system office, will be participating in a Comprehensive Administrative Review (CAR).
