<nodes> <node id="559741">
Zika Virus in the Southeast
  <uid>27649</uid>

As of the end of July 2016, there have been 1,658 cases of Zika virus infections diagnosed in the United States. It is believed that most of these infections were contracted outside the United States. While the Zika virus is transmitted primarily through the bite of an infected mosquito, it can also be transmitted through sexual contact with a person who is infected with the Zika virus.

The Florida Department of Health has identified an area in south Florida where Zika is being spread by mosquitoes. The Aedes species mosquito that transmits Zika is found throughout the Southeast.

Symptoms of the infection are generally mild and include fever, rash, joint pain, and conjunctivitis (red eyes). These symptoms generally last from several days to a week. It is uncommon for individuals who are infected with the disease to require hospitalization.

The most significant complication of Zika infection is seen in infants born from infected mothers. Zika infection can cause serious birth defects and possibly death of the unborn fetus. In the US, there is no recommendation at this time for routine screening during pregnancy.

Since currently there is no vaccine or medicine to treat the Zika virus, the best way to prevent Zika is to protect yourself from mosquito bites. Mosquitoes breed in standing water, so even small areas of stagnant water need to be drained. Even an overturned bottle cap filled with rainwater can be a breeding place. In addition to eliminating stagnant water, it is essential that anyone spending time outdoors use an effective mosquito repellant containing ingredients such as DEET or Picaridin Please refer to the CDC website for the most up to date information.

* Top Five Things Everyone Needs to Know About Zika

* CDC’s Response to Zika: What we Know and What We Don’t Know

  <status>1</status> <created>1470398071</created> <gmt_created>2016-08-05 11:54:31</gmt_created> <changed>1477497618</changed> <gmt_changed>2016-10-26 16:00:18</gmt_changed> <promote>0</promote> <sticky>0</sticky> <teaser>There have been 1,658 cases of Zika virus infection diagnosed in the US.</teaser> <type>news</type> <sentence>There have been 1,658 cases of Zika virus infection diagnosed in the US.</sentence>

There have been 1,658 cases of Zika virus infection diagnosed in the US. Prevention is key to fighting this disease.

  <dateline>2016-09-26T00:00:00-04:00</dateline> <iso_dateline>2016-09-26T00:00:00-04:00</iso_dateline> <gmt_dateline>2016-09-26 00:00:00</gmt_dateline>

  <sidebar></sidebar>

  <location></location> <contact></contact> <boilerplate></boilerplate> <boilerplate_text></boilerplate_text> <media>
559751
      </media> <hg_media>
          <nid>559751</nid> <type>image</type>
Zika Virus in the Southeast

                      <image_name>banner5_.jpg</image_name> <image_path>/sites/default/files/images/banner5_.jpg</image_path> <image_full_path>http://hg.gatech.edu//sites/default/files/images/banner5_.jpg</image_full_path> <image_740>http://hg.gatech.edu/sites/default/files/styles/740xx_scale/public/sites/default/files/images/banner5_.jpg?itok=Adf6odSR</image_740> <image_mime>image/jpeg</image_mime> <image_alt>Zika Virus in the Southeast</image_alt> <created>1470412534</created> <gmt_created>2016-08-05 15:55:34</gmt_created> <changed>1475895364</changed> <gmt_changed>2016-10-08 02:56:04</gmt_changed>
      </hg_media> <related>

http://health.gatech.edu/

Stamps Health Services

http://www.cdc.gov/zika/about/index.html

Centers for Disease Control and Prevention: Zika Virus

http://facilities.gatech.edu/mosquito-management

Facilities Management: Mosquito Controlling on Campus

      </related> <files> </files> <groups> <group id="428961">Health and Well-Being</group> </groups> <categories>
Institute and Campus
      </categories> <news_terms> <term tid="129">Institute and Campus</term> </news_terms> <keywords> <keyword tid="166906">Stamps</keyword> <keyword tid="172060">health blog</keyword> </keywords> <core_research_areas> </core_research_areas> <news_room_topics> <topic tid="71891">Health and Medicine</topic> </news_room_topics> <files></files> <related></related> <userdata></userdata></node><node id="551591">
Number of HPV-Associated Cancers in the US on the Rise
  <uid>27649</uid>

On its website, NBC News (7/7, Gussone) reports that “the number of human papilloma virus (HPV)-associated cancers in the” They love Apple.
Love, love, love it. Possibly more than you thought they did. Asked to name the first brand they could think of, 25 percent of students said Apple. That’s twice as high as the second-place brands, Nike and Coca-Cola.

2. Print is not dead to them.
Today’s college students, much like most professionals, feel comfortable in front of a screen. A majority said they preferred a digital format when reading, studying, taking notes, and doing problem sets. That said, a substantial portion of students said they preferred to do those course-related activities with paper and ink—about 40 percent, depending on the activity.

3. They’re not that into Twitter.
If you’re one of those people who worry that young people are being numbed to complexity by Twitter’s 140-character limit, you can stop worrying now. Only 26 percent of respondents said they used Twitter. Among social-networking sites, that’s miles behind Facebook (90 percent) and Instagram (64 percent).

4. They think libraries and computer labs are swell.
Students are concerned about the cost of going to college. Two-thirds of survey respondents said the cost of college was “excessive,” and nearly that many identified it as one of the biggest problems on the campus. But among the campus buildings and services that contribute to that cost, students believe libraries and computer labs are giving them the most for their buck.

5. They have not ditched scholarly works for Wikipedia.
Professors might not disdain Wikipedia as much as they used to, but some might still worry that students are relying on the free, user-edited encyclopedia. Good news for them: Only 49 percent of respondents said they had used Wikipedia.
