This event will focus on current and potential mechanisms and resources that could alleviate these challenges or provide support.

Register here.

  <status>1</status> <created>1544799409</created> <gmt_created>2018-12-14 14:56:49</gmt_created> <changed>1544799444</changed> <gmt_changed>2018-12-14 14:57:24</gmt_changed> <promote>0</promote> <sticky>0</sticky> <teaser>In a dialogue event held during Fall 2018, students and post-doctoral fellows shared some of the challenges they face while managing research/work and family responsibilities.</teaser> <type>event</type> <sentence>In a dialogue event held during Fall 2018, students and post-doctoral fellows shared some of the challenges they face while managing research/work and family responsibilities.</sentence>

  <start>2019-01-22T11:00:00-05:00</start>  <end>2019-01-22T12:30:00-05:00</end>  <end_last>2019-01-22T12:30:00-05:00</end_last>  <gmt_start>2019-01-22 16:00:00</gmt_start>  <gmt_end>2019-01-22 17:30:00</gmt_end>  <gmt_end_last>2019-01-22 17:30:00</gmt_end_last>  <times>
      <value>2019-01-22T11:00:00-05:00</value>      <value2>2019-01-22T12:30:00-05:00</value2>      <rrule>  </rrule>      <timezone>America/New_York</timezone>      <timezone_db>America/New_York</timezone_db>      <date_type>datetime</date_type>
  </times>  <gmt_times>
      <value>2019-01-22 11:00:00</value>      <value2>2019-01-22 12:30:00</value2>      <rrule>  </rrule>      <timezone>America/New_York</timezone>      <timezone_db>America/New_York</timezone_db>      <date_type>datetime</date_type>
  </gmt_times>  <phone></phone>

  <location_url>

  </location_url>

  <contact>
For questions or comments, contact Pinar Keskinocak at pinar@isye.gatech.edu or Beril Toktay at beril.toktay@scheller.gatech.edu.
</contact>  <fee></fee>  <extras>      </extras>  <location></location>  <media>      </media>  <hg_media>      </hg_media>  <boilerplate></boilerplate>  <boilerplate_text></boilerplate_text>  <sidebar></sidebar>  <related>      </related>  <files>      </files>  <groups>          <group id="1313">Institute Diversity</group>      </groups>  <categories>      </categories>  <event_terms>      </event_terms>  <event_audience>          <term tid="78761">Faculty/Staff</term>          <term tid="78771">Public</term>          <term tid="78751">Undergraduate students</term>      </event_audience>  <keywords>          <keyword tid="179991">Demystifying 2019</keyword>      </keywords>  <userdata></userdata></node><node id="611513">
Demystifying Tech: Professional Development Programs for Faculty and Staff
  <uid>34594</uid>

Georgia Tech and the University System of Georgia offer a number of professional development programs for faculty and staff, such as the Emerging Leaders Program, Women’s Leadership Program, Adaptive Leadership Program, ACC Academic Leadership Network, and USG Executive Leadership Institute. Students applied and submitted vision statements for the competition, which were narrowed down and awarded by the ADVANCE professors.

“It was really exciting for me to read the vision statements,” Randall said. “I left incredibly excited and inspired because it is not very often you get to stop and just focus on great things that our female students are doing and want to do, and they’re outrageously good.”

Nine College of Computing, six electrical and computer engineering, and one mathematics student were chosen overall.

The event hosted influential leaders from academia, industry, nonprofit, and entrepreneurship spheres, predominantly women, who shared their stories amongst four conference programs: Entrepreneurship, Academe, Leadership, and STEM outreach.

The program consisted of a number of panels and keynote speeches over the course of the two days. Randall and Howard participated in the “Paths and Strategies to Successful and Fulfilling Careers in Academia” panel, while Anton joined an elite panel on academic leadership.

One Georgia Tech Ph.D. student, Sarah Cannon in the School of Computer Science, was also a member of a panel that focused on undergraduates. The discussion, titled “Inspiring Lessons and Success Stories for the Undergrad,” included two working professionals and two current Ph.D. students.

Cannon is in her fourth year pursuing her Ph.D. in algorithms, combinatorics, and optimization and is advised by Randall. She was excited to be a part of the conference and panel because of what the exchange of ideas with peers can lead to in her research.

“It’s a broad conference, but what we’re doing here is increasingly interdisciplinary,” Cannon said. “Right now, (Randall) and I have collaborations going on with some in the physics department. That starts with people meeting and sharing what they’re doing. I was just excited to share what I’ve been working on and hear about the other fascinating things that are being done by women in STEM.”

Georgia Tech ADVANCE was a sponsor of the summit, and Randall was a member of the organizing committee.

  <status>1</status> <created>1478813985</created> <gmt_created>2016-11-10 21:39:45</gmt_created> <changed>1480527572</changed> <gmt_changed>2016-11-30 17:39:32</gmt_changed> <promote>0</promote> <sticky>0</sticky> <teaser>Two College of Computing professors and one College of Computing student participated in panels during the Women's Leadership Summit.</teaser> <type>news</type> <sentence>Two College of Computing professors and one College of Computing student participated in panels during the Women's Leadership Summit.</sentence>

  <dateline>2016-11-10T00:00:00-05:00</dateline>  <iso_dateline>2016-11-10T00:00:00-05:00</iso_dateline>  <gmt_dateline>2016-11-10 00:00:00</gmt_dateline>

  <sidebar></sidebar>
david.mitchell@cc.gatech.edu
  <location></location>  <contact>
David Mitchell

Communications Officer I
</contact>  <boilerplate></boilerplate>  <boilerplate_text></boilerplate_text>  <media>
583768

61093
      </media>  <hg_media>
          <nid>583768</nid>          <type>image</type>
IEEE/WIE Women's Leadership Summit

                      <image_name>WIE.jpeg</image_name>            <image_path>/sites/default/files/images/WIE.jpeg</image_path>            <image_full_path>http://hg.gatech.edu//sites/default/files/images/WIE.jpeg</image_full_path>            <image_740>http://hg.gatech.edu/sites/default/files/styles/740xx_scale/public/sites/default/files/images/WIE.jpeg?itok=KufcdSm0</image_740>            <image_mime>image/jpeg</image_mime>            <image_alt></image_alt>                    <created>1478813876</created>          <gmt_created>2016-11-10 21:37:56</gmt_created>          <changed>1478813876</changed>          <gmt_changed>2016-11-10 21:37:56</gmt_changed>

          <nid>61093</nid>          <type>image</type>
Dana Randall

                      <image_name>dana-randall.jpg</image_name>            <image_path>/sites/default/files/images/dana-randall.jpg</image_path>            <image_full_path>http://hg.gatech.edu//sites/default/files/images/dana-randall.jpg</image_full_path>            <image_740>http://hg.gatech.edu/sites/default/files/styles/740xx_scale/public/sites/default/files/images/dana-randall.jpg?itok=7WK7lu7o</image_740>            <image_mime>image/jpeg</image_mime>            <image_alt>Dana Randall</image_alt>                    <created>1449176308</created>          <gmt_created>2015-12-03 20:58:28</gmt_created>          <changed>1475894531</changed>          <gmt_changed>2016-10-08 02:42:11</gmt_changed>
      </hg_media>  <related>      </related>  <files>      </files>  <groups>          <group id="47223">College of Computing</group>      </groups>  <categories>      </categories>  <news_terms>      </news_terms>  <keywords>          <keyword tid="1187">IEEE</keyword>          <keyword tid="10626">WIE</keyword>          <keyword tid="14107">ADVANCE Women in Engineering</keyword>          <keyword tid="714">ADVANCE</keyword>          <keyword tid="1235">women in engineering</keyword>          <keyword tid="4476">Women's Leadership Conference</keyword>      </keywords>  <core_research_areas>      </core_research_areas>  <news_room_topics>      </news_room_topics>  <files></files>  <related></related>  <userdata></userdata></node><node id="582407">
Georgia Tech's Connections to the University System of Georgia and Beyond
  <uid>28762</uid>

The Office of Government and Community Relations (GCR) is Georgia Tech’s primary connection to federal, state, and local governments and communities. What are the funding sources for these three budgets, and how are the resources applied for the benefit of students and sponsors? What are the allocable uses for these different sources? What is the budget outlook for these three budgets, and what can we expect for the near future? Nancy Houfek

Many highly successful women in academia can easily identify what changes need to happen for their organization to succeed, but find it difficult to lead others to confront the challenges facing their group. They often find themselves not heard in the way that they had hoped. The heart of this workshop is to help women use a strategic approach to getting their voices on the table: differentiating types of challenges, understanding factions and what's at stake, using alliances, getting on the balcony, and preparing for meetings in a new way. This workshop also will offer vocal skills designed to help participants be more effective as leaders. The goal is to be heard and understood so that we can successfully influence decision-making in both our professional and our daily lives. Participants will leave with new strategies — theoretical, psychological, and physical — for successfully leading change in their institution or organization.

View Agenda

View Biography

http://www.isye.gatech.edu/apps/RSVP/ADVANCE-event/

  <status>1</status>  <created>1425481358</created>  <gmt_created>2015-03-04 15:02:38</gmt_created>  <changed>1475891312</changed>  <gmt_changed>2016-10-08 01:48:32</gmt_changed>  <promote>0</promote>  <sticky>0</sticky>  <teaser>Get Your Voice on the Table: Leadership Strategies for Female Faculty</teaser>  <type>event</type>  <sentence>Get Your Voice on the Table: Leadership Strategies for Female Faculty</sentence>

  <start>2015-03-30T10:30:00-04:00</start>  <end>2015-03-30T15:30:00-04:00</end>  <end_last>2015-03-30T15:30:00-04:00</end_last>  <gmt_start>2015-03-30 14:30:00</gmt_start>  <gmt_end>2015-03-30 19:30:00</gmt_end>  <gmt_end_last>2015-03-30 19:30:00</gmt_end_last>  <times>
      <value>2015-03-30T10:30:00-04:00</value>      <value2>2015-03-30T15:30:00-04:00</value2>      <rrule>  </rrule>      <timezone>America/New_York</timezone>      <timezone_db>America/New_York</timezone_db>      <date_type>datetime</date_type>
  </times>  <gmt_times>
      <value>2015-03-30 10:30:00</value>      <value2>2015-03-30 03:30:00</value2>      <rrule>  </rrule>      <timezone>America/New_York</timezone>      <timezone_db>America/New_York</timezone_db>      <date_type>datetime</date_type>
  </gmt_times>  <phone></phone>

  <location_url>

  </location_url>

  <contact></contact>  <fee></fee>  <extras>      </extras>  <location></location>  <media>      </media>  <hg_media>      </hg_media>  <boilerplate></boilerplate>  <boilerplate_text></boilerplate_text>  <sidebar></sidebar>  <related>      </related>  <files>      </files>  <groups>          <group id="1242">School of Industrial and Systems Engineering (ISYE)</group>      </groups>  <categories>
Conference/Symposium
      </categories>  <event_terms>          <term tid="1789">Conference/Symposium</term>      </event_terms>  <event_audience>          <term tid="78761">Faculty/Staff</term>      </event_audience>  <keywords>      </keywords>  <userdata></userdata></node><node id="358431">
ADVANCE Meeting
  <uid>27820</uid>

What is the ADVANCE Program?

ADVANCE is dedicated to analyzing and eliminating gender disparities in academia.
