Of the more than 1,200 students who were eligible to receive a 2016 Tower Award, more than 200 students gathered for the annual recognition ceremony, hosted by OMED: Educational Services, on April 7 at the Georgia Tech Hotel and Conference Center.\u003C\/p\u003E\u003Cp\u003E\u201cFrom interning at NASA to creating \u003Ca href=\u0022http:\/\/www.theblackburdell.com\/black-burdell\/\u0022\u003EThe Black Burdell\u003C\/a\u003E, a nonprofit organization that is changing the face of entrepreneurship, our OMED participants and Tower Awards recipients are defining what\u2019s next at Georgia Tech and beyond, and we applaud their hard work, persistence, and determination,\u201d said OMED Director Cynthia Moore.\u003C\/p\u003E\u003Cp\u003EAward \u003Ca href=\u0022http:\/\/omed.gatech.edu\/content\/tower-eligibility\u0022\u003Ecategories\u003C\/a\u003E included \u003Cstrong\u003EPh.D. Awards, Master\u2019s Awards\u003C\/strong\u003E (graduating GPA of 3.5 or higher), \u003Cstrong\u003EGraduating Senior Sustained Awards\u003C\/strong\u003E (cumulative GPA of 3.15 or higher), \u003Cstrong\u003ESustained Awards \u003C\/strong\u003E(cumulative GPA of 3.15 or higher), \u003Cstrong\u003EYearly Awards\u003C\/strong\u003E (GPA of 3.15 or higher over the past three semesters), and \u003Cstrong\u003EFirst-Year Awards \u003C\/strong\u003E(cumulative GPA of 3.15 or higher). Within each award category, except the Ph.D. and Master\u2019s Awards, sub-categories included Bronze (GPA of 3.15-3.49), Silver (GPA of 3.50-3.94), and Gold (GPA of 3.95 or higher).\u003C\/p\u003E\u003Cp\u003ETwo special recognitions were also presented: \u003Ca href=\u0022http:\/\/www.gtblackalumni.org\/\u0022\u003EGeorgia Tech Black Alumni Organization\u003C\/a\u003E Unsung Hero Award and OMED Student Mentor Award. \u003Cstrong\u003EJasmine Atkinson\u003C\/strong\u003E, an industrial and systems engineering student, received the Unsung Hero Award, and \u003Cstrong\u003ESergio Sandoval\u003C\/strong\u003E, an aerospace engineering student, was honored with the Student Mentor Award. In addition, both students received a 2016 Tower Award for their outstanding academic performance at Tech.\u003C\/p\u003E\u003Cp\u003E\u201cOMED is the reason that I was so successful at Georgia Tech,\u201d said Atkinson, who will join Eaton, one of OMED\u2019s corporate partners, after graduation this summer. \u201cFrom participating in the Challenge Program to serving as a tutor, OMED was my home away from home, and I am honored to receive the Unsung Hero Award for my efforts over the past five years.\u201d\u003C\/p\u003E\u003Cp\u003ESandoval, who will be interning at NASA\u2019s Jet Propulsion Laboratory this summer, was surprised by the recognition, remarking, \u201cAwards like this help us keep going.\u201d\u003C\/p\u003E\u003Cp\u003EPart of \u003Ca href=\u0022http:\/\/diversity.gatech.edu\/\u0022\u003EInstitute Diversity\u003C\/a\u003E, OMED is supported by more than 20 \u003Ca href=\u0022http:\/\/omed.gatech.edu\/content\/sponsors\u0022\u003Ecorporate partners and sponsors\u003C\/a\u003E who attended and provided raffle giveaways at the Tower Awards.
