The event will feature several short talks, with topics ranging from scientific breakthroughs to inspiring human stories.\u003C\/p\u003E\u003Cp\u003ESecond-year computer science majors and co-directors of TEDxGeorgiaTech Yamini Nambiar and Sana Ajani are excited for what this year\u2019s TEDxGeorgiaTech has in store. This year\u0027s theme is \u201cRaise Your Ideas to the Next Power.\u201d\u003C\/p\u003E\u003Cp\u003E\u201cIt\u2019s all about amplifying ideas \u2014 taking something simple and exponentiating it,\u201d Nambiar said.\u003C\/p\u003E\u003Cp\u003EThe TEDx program was created to continue TED\u2019s mission of \u201cIdeas Worth Spreading.\u201d Through TEDx, organizers hold events to spark intellectual conversations and connect people from within their community. The events are planned independently with a free license granted by TED. This enables anyone to host a TED-like event in his or her own area.\u003C\/p\u003E\u003Cp\u003EThe goal of TEDxGeorgiaTech is to showcase ideas from the community and foster further innovation at Georgia Tech. Past speakers have included photographers, social business owners, and doctors.\u003C\/p\u003E\u003Cp\u003E\u201cWe will feature eight speakers from around Atlanta,\u201d Nambiar said. \u201cThere will be everything from entrepreneurs to artists \u2014 even a Swedish pop star.\u201d\u003C\/p\u003E\u003Cp\u003ESpeakers are chosen by a team of Georgia Tech students. Nambiar worked with 14 other students to choose prominent figures from the Atlanta area who would be of interest to the Georgia Tech community. The list of speakers will soon be announced on the \u003Ca href=\u0022http:\/\/tedxgeorgiatech.com\/\u0022\u003ETEDxGeorgiaTech website\u003C\/a\u003E.\u003C\/p\u003E\u003Cp\u003EStudents who want to experience TEDx firsthand have until April 1 to \u003Ca href=\u0022https:\/\/docs.google.com\/forms\/d\/1BdNpoftpR1IcfQnmRd6kJO5ZPuMDTyrMVUVSKirR9ps\/viewform?c=0\u0026amp;w=1\u0022\u003Eapply to be an audience member\u003C\/a\u003E. Audience members have the opportunity to meet the speakers and talk to them directly. TEDxGeorgiaTech also posts videos of all past speakers \u003Ca href=\u0022http:\/\/tedxtalks.ted.com\/browse\/talks-by-event\/tedxgeorgiatech\u0022\u003Eonline\u003C\/a\u003E.\u003C\/p\u003E\u003Cp\u003E\u201cWatching TEDxGeorgiaTech live and in person provides a unique experience that isn\u2019t offered by only viewing it online,\u201d Nambiar said. She encourages students to apply and witness the event directly. \u201cIt gives you a chance to meet with speakers and discuss topics you\u2019re interested in.\u0022\u0026nbsp;\u003C\/p\u003E\u003Ch5\u003E\u003Cstrong\u003ETaking TED Off Campus\u003C\/strong\u003E\u0026nbsp;\u003C\/h5\u003E\u003Cp\u003EAnother TEDx opportunity is being organized two Georgia Tech students in their hometown just west of Atlanta. Mahdi Al Husseini, a third-year biomedical engineering and public policy major, and Joshua Barnett, a third-year physics major, will host the second annual \u003Ca href=\u0022http:\/\/www.tedxdouglasville.com\/\u0022\u003ETEDxDouglasville\u003C\/a\u003E on April 9.\u0026nbsp;\u003C\/p\u003E\u003Cp\u003ELast year\u2019s event sparked more than half a million YouTube views and engaged local organizations such as the Douglas Youth Department and Progressive Action Towards the Health of Douglasville. Even with these accomplishments, TEDxDouglasville has plans to grow.\u003C\/p\u003E\u003Cp\u003E\u201cWith each new event, our team rediscovers the fulfillment of public service and sets precedent for even younger members to make tangible changes in their communities,\u201d Husseini said.\u003C\/p\u003E\u003Cp\u003EHusseini was inspired to begin a TEDx event in Douglasville to give back to his hometown. Organizing the event simply began with applying for a license online at TED\u2019s website.\u003C\/p\u003E\u003Cp\u003E\u201cMany Georgia Tech students have a burning desire to change the world,\u201d he said. \u201cYou can start here in Atlanta\u2019s backyard.\u201d He encourages other students to host their own TEDx events.\u003C\/p\u003E\u003Cp\u003EGeorgia Tech faculty members \u003Ca href=\u0022http:\/\/www.cra.gatech.edu\/people\/lcadonati6\u0022\u003ELaura Cadonati\u003C\/a\u003E (physics), \u003Ca href=\u0022http:\/\/www.biology.gatech.edu\/people\/brian-hammer\u0022\u003EBrian Hammer\u003C\/a\u003E (biology), and \u003Ca href=\u0022https:\/\/bme.gatech.edu\/bme\/faculty\/Raja-Schaar\u0022\u003ERaja Scharr\u003C\/a\u003E\u0026nbsp;(biomedical engineering) will speak at this year\u2019s event. Topics will range from biology to industrial design, and tickets can be purchased \u003Ca href=\u0022https:\/\/www.eventbrite.com\/e\/tedxdouglasville-2016-tickets-21694479773?aff=eac2\u0022\u003Ehere\u003C\/a\u003E for $20. Lunch will be provided.
