On Monday, February 22, 2016, Professor Lisa Yaszek was one of a dozen guest scholars and artists invited to participate in Clark Atlanta University's "Ancient and New STE(A)M: Roots and Futures of Black Speculative Arts and Science Fictions" symposium. This event, brought together both scholarly and popular figures in Afrofuturism, a multimedia literary and cultural aesthetic that combines Western genre fiction with non-Western cosmologies to re-present the past, present, and future of science, technology, and race while imagining strange new futures in full color.As a leading scholar in the cultural history of Afrofuturism and science fiction, Yaszek provided an overview of the complex and sometimes contradictory relations between these two modes of storytelling while previewing some of the startling new facts about the history of race relations in the early science fiction community featured in her forthcoming book, Sisters of Tomorrow: The First Women of Science Fiction.
