She is leading this group in the development of technology to assist practitioners and policy makers in meeting the challenge of eliciting and expressing policies and regulations (a form of requirements). A large number of companies have commercialized his research and he has maintained active collaborations with researchers and companies across three continents. Abowd (pronounced AY-bowd) is a Professor in the College of Computing at Georgia Tech . His research interests lie in the intersection between Software Engineering and Human-Computer Interaction. Specifically, Dr.Abowd is interested in ubiquitous computing (ubicomp) and the research issues involved in building and evaluating ubicomp applications that impact our everyday lives. In the College of Computing, he is involved in research with faculty from the GVU Center and the Georgia Tech Broadband Institute.\u003C\/p\u003E\u003Cp\u003EDr. Abowd directs the Ubiquitous Computing Research Group in the College of Computing and GVU Center. This effort started with the Future Computing Environments research group in 1995, and has since matured into a collection of research groups, including Dr. Abowd\u0027s own group. The FCE Group now consists of a federation of many faculty in the College of Computing. One of the major research efforts that Dr. Abowd initated is the Aware Home Research Initiative, now directed by Beth Mynatt, together with many faculty in the College of Computing, School of Psychology, and the School of Electrical and Computer Engineering.\u003C\/p\u003E\u003Cp\u003EDr. Abowd received the degree of B.S. in Mathematics and Physics in 1986 from the University of Notre Dame. The goals of his research are to model human creativity in practical tasks such as conceptual design of complex systems, to develop interactive tools for aiding people in creative tasks, and to invent computational systems that are themselves creative. His research explores analogical thinking, systems thinking, visual thinking, and meta-thinking as fundamental processes of creativity. His current projects investigate analogical thinking and systems thinking in biologically inspired engineering design, analogical thinking and visual thinking on intelligence tests, and systems thinking and meta-thinking in self-adaptation of game-playing agents. Related projects focus on systems thinking and meta-thinking in learning about ecological systems in middle school science, analogical thinking and systems thinking in learning about biologically inspired design.\u003C\/p\u003E\u003Cp\u003EAshok is a member of the Organizing Committee of the conference series on Advances on Cognitive Systems, and the Steering Committee of the conference series on Theory and Application of Diagrams. She got her Ph.D. from the School of Information at UC Berkeley in December 2013, where she was advised by Prof. Tapan Parikh. Her dissertation research examined new media practices of youth from socioeconomically disadvantaged backgrounds in India, with a view to highlight the innovation and agency of these lead technology adopters as they appropriate the mobile phone to create informal learning environments for themselves. Neha also served as a postdoctoral researcher at the University of Washington\u0027s Computer Science \u0026amp; Engineering department from 2013 to 2014, where she worked with Profs. Richard Anderson, Gaetano Borriello, and Beth Kolko. From 2014 to 2015, she was a postdoctoral fellow at the Annenberg School of Communication at the University of Southern California, before joining Georgia Tech in Fall 2015.\u003Cbr \/\u003E\u003Cbr \/\u003ENeha\u0027s research lies in the overlap of the Human-Computer Interaction (HCI) and the Information and Communication Technology and Development (ICTD) spaces. She uses her background in computer science, design, and ethnography to study emerging technology practices of marginalized users in resource-challenged communities and to leverage this understanding towards the design and deployment of appropriate technology- and process-based solutions. Neha\u0027s work contributes towards scholarship on mobile, social, and visual media practices and applies this research to design appropriate and contextually-relevant mHealth and education interventions for marginalized communities, mainly in South Asia.\u003Cbr \/\u003E\u003Cbr \/\u003ENeha also works towards wider adoption of the research solutions that she designs. She has co-founded a non-profit mHealth start-up, which targets concerns regarding children\u0027s health - early detection of growth, development, and immunization issues - in the Indian context. This idea won first prize at a health hackathon organized by CAMTech and held at GE Research in Bangalore, in July 2014. It also won an Innovation Award from CAMTech in early She is a developmental psychologist with an interest in autism and related developmental conditions. Her current research lies at the interdisciplinary boundary between developmental psychology and computing. She asks questions regarding how the behavior of individuals with autism emerges and transforms over time. To find answers, she applies novel sensing capabilities, and computationally driven measurement and modeling. This work is leading to novel ways of capturing and quantifying complex human behaviors, as well as developing new understandings of these behaviors, both among typically developing individuals and those with autism. The ultimate goal is to make these new measurements and modeling techniques work outside the lab, in real-world environments like the home, schools, and clinics where there is a need for more objective, reliable means of tracking the emergence of autism and its developmental course. \u0026nbsp;\u003C\/p\u003E\u003Cp class=\u0022p1\u0022\u003EDr. Rozga also has a broad interest in exploring how technology can impact research and clinical care of autism. Recent projects in this space include evaluating a novel telehealth tool to support remote diagnosis of autism using videos recorded by parents in the home, and developing and evaluating motion-based games to support engagement and collaboration among students with autism. \u0026nbsp;\u003C\/p\u003E\u003Cp class=\u0022p1\u0022\u003EDr. Rozga received a B.A. in Psychology (2000) from the University of California Berkeley, and an M.S. (2002) and Ph.D. (2007) in Developmental Psychology from the University of California Los Angeles. She completed a two-year postdoctoral fellowship through the Center for Behavior Neuroscience at Georgia State University before joining the faculty at Georgia Tech in 2010. Her emphasis is on using psychological theories and methods to address fundamental topics of human computer interaction. Her current research interest is in the area of chronic care management. Recently she has addressed some of the following questions: how software solutions can improve asthma management in children, how crowd sourcing can aid individuals with autism spectrum disorders and their caregiver, and how lab-based technologies can be scaled and deployed to broaden their impact. She is interested in test the hypothesis that systems designed with principles of human development and cognition can be effective across different clinical populations simply by altering the content (e.g., from asthma information to diabetes information).\u003C\/p\u003E\u003Cp\u003EShe received her Ph.D. in Developmental Psychology from Harvard University. She was an Assistant Professor of Psychology at Southern New Hampshire University before joining the faculty at Georgia Tech. She is currently a Senior Research Scientist in Interactive Computing and has been the Director of Pediatric Research at the Health Systems Institute since 2009. She is also one of the principal researchers in the Aware Home Research Initiative; investigating the design of future home technologies, especially those that enable older adults to continue living independently as opposed to moving to an institutional care setting.\u003C\/p\u003E\u003Cp\u003EMynatt is an internationally recognized expert in the areas of ubiquitous computing and assistive technologies. Her research contributes to ongoing work in personal health informatics, computer-supported collaborative work and human-computer interface design.\u003C\/p\u003E\u003Cp\u003EMynatt is also the Vice Chair of the \u003Ca href=\u0022http:\/\/www.cra.org\/ccc\u0022\u003EComputing Community Consortium\u003C\/a\u003E, an NSF-sponsored effort to engage the computing research community in envisioning more audacious research challenges. She has published more than 100 scientific papers and chaired the CHI 2010 conference, the premier international conference in human-computer interaction. Her research engages in the study of informal learning and the impact of cultural values on technology use and production. DiSalvo\u2019s work has included the development of games such as the \u003Cem\u003EClick! Urban Adventure\u003C\/em\u003E that encouraged middle school females interest in technology and science, and casual games to build interest in the Children\u2019s Museum of Pittsburgh. Her project, the \u003Cem\u003EGlitch Game Testers\u003C\/em\u003E, leveraged young African American males passion for gaming into an interest in computer science through authentic work and learning experiences.\u0026nbsp;\u003C\/p\u003E\u003Cp\u003ECurrently, the CAT Lab is exploring parents\u2019 use of technology for informal learning. In its first stages, this research is developing an understanding of how and why parents use or don\u2019t choose to use computers, mobile devices, and other technology for learning. We are finding differences in patterns of use based upon gender, education level and income level. Future work included design research using participatory design methods to create parent portals that encourage the use of informal learning across socio-economic divides.\u003C\/p\u003E\u003Cp\u003EWorking in Maker Spaces and with art and technology the CAT Lab is exploring how maker oriented learning approaches can increase communities of learners, transfer and reflection in undergraduate computer science courses.\u0026nbsp; They are also pursuing the use of microcontrollers in educational art settings that emphasis art practice and technology practice equally.\u0026nbsp; Early findings suggest that the use of maker oriented learning and art practices with technology improve the motivation and broaden students\u2019 vision of what technology can do.\u0026nbsp;\u003C\/p\u003E\u003Cp\u003EThe CAT Lab is also developing a community lab for computational learning in the Westside of Atlanta. The Westside neighborhoods have an impoverished educational landscape for K-12 students, yet border Georgia Tech and other higher education institutions. The community lab will consist of a computer services youth co-operative, where high school students will be trained to upgrade and fix donated surplus computer from local institution and companies, sell them in their neighborhood, and offer ongoing service and support to their customers. The group\u0027s research focus is to help people take advantage of information to enrich their lives. In the past ten years, the Internet and the WWW have helped to significantly expand the amount of data accessible to people. Whether someone is buying a new computer, figuring out how traffic will be on the ride home, or answering email, he or she may simply feel overwhelmed by the sheer amount of information present or may not be able to find the right information.\u003Cbr \/\u003EDr. Stasko\u0027s research group is uncovering ways to help people benefit from this flood of information. One central focus of a number of their projects is the creation of Information Visualization tools to help people understand large data sets. She pioneered the computer reasoning method called \u003Cstrong\u003Ecase-based reasoning\u003C\/strong\u003E, a way of solving problems based on analogies to past experiences, and her lab emphasized case-based reasoning for situations of real-world complexity. Her book, \u003Cem\u003ECase-Based Reasoning\u003C\/em\u003E, synthesizes work across the field of case-based reasoning from its inception to 1993. The notion of a case-based design aid (CBDA), or an indexed library of design cases with the kinds of information in them that can help designers make design decisions, comes from her lab, which was the originator of the first CBDA, Archie-II, in collaboration with colleagues in architecture. She has also been a leader in articulating the cognitive model case-based reasoning implies and the applications and implications of case-based reasoning for education and creative problem solving. For the past decade, she has focused most of her research using the model to design science curriculum for middle school. The approach, called Learning by Design\u2122 (LBD), is a design-based learning approach and an inquiry-oriented project-based approach to science learning. Students learn science and scientific reasoning in the context of designing working artifacts (e.g., a miniature vehicle). The challenge engages them and encourages curiosity, the want to succeed promotes a want to learn what\u0027s needed to succeed, and the design cycle, which interweaves design and investigation, engineering and scientific reasoning, learning and application, and doing and reflection, helps children identify what they need to learn, come to understand the science content and come to become well-versed in science practices. More recently, she and her students are applying what they\u0027ve learned about design-based learning to informal education -- after-school programs, museum programs, and museum exhibits. The goal of these projects is to identify ways of helping pre-teens and young teens consider who they are as thinkers and to come to value informed decision making and informed production and consumption of evidence. In Kitchen Science Investigators, 5th and 6th graders are learning in the context of cooking. She received her B.E. degree from the National Taiwan University in 1999, and her M.S. and Ph.D. degrees in Computer Science from the University of Washington in 2001 and 2005 respectively. Before joining Georgia Tech, Liu was an assistant professor at the University of Southern California since 2006. Liu\u0027s research interests are in computer graphics and animation, including physics-based animation, character animation, numerical methods, robotics and computational biomechanics. The goal of her research is to expand computer-generated character animation from a visualization tool to an interdisciplinary research areas centered at the studies of human motion and autonomous control. Specifically, she will focus on three inter-related research directions: (1) Integrating insights of biomechanics to enhance physics-based computational models for synthesis of human motion. (2) Designing efficient algorithms for controlling and simulating optimal motion. (3) Synthesizing autonomous behaviors with synthetic sensory and physiology. Dr. Turk has explored several methods of taking a large polygonal model and creating simplified versions of the model for more rapid display. Another recent theme in his research is that model and image creation can be performed better if various aspects of people\u0027s visual perception are taken into account. Two examples of this are the high contrast display technique of his student Jack Tumblin, and the image-driven model simplification method of his student Peter Lindstrom. He has also recently been investigating the creation and manipulation of surfaces using a new form of interpolating implicit function. The resulting implicit surfaces are useful for shape transformation, for surface reconstruction from noisy data, and for the creation of implicit surfaces that match a given polygonal model. He received his Ph.D. degree from Yale University for his dissertation on \u0022Question-Driven Understanding: An Integrated Theory of Story Understanding, Memory, and Learning\u0022 in 1989.\u003C\/p\u003E\u003Cp\u003EDr. Ram\u0027s research interests lie in the areas of artificial intelligence and cognitive science, specifically machine learning, natural language processing, case-based reasoning, educational technology, and artificial intelligence applications. He has more than 90 research publications in these areas. In past years he has taught \u0022Computer Vision\u0022 (CS 4495\/7495) and \u0022Introduction to Probabilistic Graphical Models\u0022 (CS 8803). He is currently teaching \u0022Pattern Recognition\u0022 (CS 4803) and \u0022Computer Graphics\u0022 (CS 4451).\u003C\/p\u003E\u003Cp\u003EDr. Rehg received the 2005 Raytheon Faculty Fellowship Award from the College of Computing. His paper with Ph.D. student Yushi Jing and collaborator Vladimir Pavlovic was the recipient of a Distinguished Student Paper Award at the 2005 International Conference on Machine Learning. Dr. Rehg currently serves on the Editorial Board of the International Journal of Computer Vision. He was the Short Courses Chair for the International Conference on Computer Vision (ICCV) in 2005 and the Workshops Chair for ICCV 2003.\u003C\/p\u003E\u003Cp\u003EDr. Rehg consults for several companies and has served as an expert witness. Consequently, there is value in discovering new computational techniques that make computers better communicators, entertainers, and educators. Dr. Jackson\u2019s work focuses on studying real-world applications for direct brain interfaces as well as other biometric interfaces. She participated in the first team to implant a human being with a chronic recording electrode in 1998, and has also extensively explored noninvasive brain-computer interfaces with technologies such as EEG and functional Near Infrared (fNIR) imaging. Her work has been funded by a variety of sponsors including the National Science Foundation, National Institutes of Health (NINDS), NIDRR, and DARPA.\u003C\/p\u003E\u003Cp\u003EPrior to her current appointment at Georgia Tech, Dr. Jackson was a tenured Associate Professor in the Computer Information Systems Department at Georgia State University. Previous to GSU, she was on the faculty of the College of Computing at Georgia Tech for nine years as a Research Scientist, creating and directing the Open Systems lab, and teaching Software Engineering. Before coming to academia, she worked for nine years in industry as a professional software engineer developing real-time embedded systems, secure operating systems, networking, and compilers. Companies included Texas Instruments, Sperry, and National Semiconductor.\u003C\/p\u003E\u003Cp\u003EDr. Jackson holds a Ph.D. in Computer Science from the Georgia Institute of Technology (1998). Her dissertation work in user interface reengineering combined the areas of Human-Computer Interface and Software Engineering, and her minor was Postsecondary Education.
