Bio: Marc Weissburg, with a Ph.D. in Ecology and Evolutionary Biology from the State University of New York, Stony Brook, currently directs the Center for Biologically Inspired Design at the Georgia Institute of Technology. He holds the title of a Brook Byers Professor within the School of Biological Sciences. Weissburg's research encompasses chemical ecology, sensory ecology, community ecology, and biologically inspired design. He leverages biological principles to enhance human technology and processes and is recognized for his innovative teaching methods across various education levels.

Description: This talk will preview the Dataseum, an exhibition to be presented at the Price Gilbert Library in 2024 that will provide opportunities for public interaction with data from Georgia Tech researchers around sustainability and the environment.

Bio: Jessica Roberts is an Assistant Professor in the School of Interactive Computing at GT with a PhD in the Learning Sciences, specializing in geospatial analysis and visualization in informal learning. As director of the Technology-Integrated Learning Environments (TILEs) Lab at Georgia Tech, her research explores technology-mediated social learning experiences in environments such as museums and citizen science. She is a former middle school teacher and a Brook Byers Institute for Sustainable Systems Faculty Fellow. Her work on the design of interactive learning technologies has been exhibited at venues such as the Field Museum of Natural History in Chicago and the New York Hall of Science. Prior to joining Georgia Tech, Dr. Roberts conducted postdoctoral research at the Human-Computer Interaction Institute at Carnegie Mellon University and the Tidal Lab at Northwestern University.

Abstract: In 2019, a fire at a natural gas plant and historically low temperatures caused an emergency shortage of natural gas in Michigan. To avoid an outage, the Governor issued a request via statewide text alert to turn thermostats down to 65 degrees F. We analyze the effectiveness of this request using high-frequency smart-thermostat data from Michigan and four neighboring states. Using a difference-in-differences research design, we find that Michigan households reduced thermostat settings by 1.1 degrees on average following the Governor’s request. Households that were previously above 65 degrees F responded strongly, while households that were below did not respond at all or increased their thermostat settings. Meanwhile, households in districts that voted for the Governor in 2018 were more likely to comply. Our results suggest that unrealistic compliance goals and political polarization reduce the effectiveness of emergency calls to conserve energy.

Bio: Dylan Brewer joined the faculty at the School of Economics in 2019. He received his PhD in Economics with a dual major in Environmental Science and Policy from Michigan State University in May 2019 as well as a Master of Arts degree in Economics from the same institution in 2016. Prior to his graduate studies, Dylan completed a Bachelor of Arts degree with majors in Economics and International Relations at the University of Virginia in 2014. Dylan's research uses the tools of empirical industrial organization, applied econometrics, and machine learning to answer questions in energy and environmental economics. Focusing on incentives for energy use and conservation under different institutional regimes, he emphasizes applying economic insight to problems in energy and the environment by blending theory and empirics with a clear and straightforward analysis. Current projects include research on residential energy use, demand management in electricity markets, and urban issues such as street lighting, crime, and taxi demand. Additionally, Dylan is a member of the board of trustees for the State of Michigan Chapter of the Nature Conservancy.

Abstract: To address the global issue of water quality degradation from cities, this project has built upon relationships between Spelman College, GSU, NGOs, and community-based watershed advocacy organizations to better identify and address sewage spills in Atlanta. We developed a community-based water quality monitoring network in watersheds totaling 300 square-miles of highly urbanized and densely populated headwaters of two rivers in metro Atlanta, providing greater regulatory effectiveness, better relations between impacted communities and watersheds, and new opportunities to improve both watershed and public health. The Chattahoochee Riverkeeper, American Rivers, and the West Atlanta Watershed Alliance have assisted with creating a system whereby students at Spelman and GSU processed water quality samples routinely collected by community members of the South River Watershed Alliance, Flint Riverkeeper, and ECO-Action.

Dr. Ismael Rafols, senior researcher at Leiden University in the Netherlands, will present a bibliometric analysis on how publications may be related to the various UN Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs). Rather than providing a single mapping of publications to each SDG, they propose a plural landscape for diverse stakeholders to explore the relationship according to their own views. To do so, they will describe an interactive platform that allows users to scrutinize publications related to SDGs in a global map of science. Dr. Rebecca Watts Hull from the Center for Serve-Learn-Sustain will be moderating this virtual event, and Dr. Sebnem Ozkan from the Atlanta Global Studies Center will introduce the event.

About the Speaker: Ismael Rafols is a senior researcher at CWTS. He works on the development of novel approaches to Science & Technology indicators for informing evaluation, foresight and research strategies. His current focus is on research priority setting, in particular for societal challenges such as Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs) in health and agriculture.

About the Moderator: Rebecca Watts Hull is an environmental sociologist with professional experience in environmental education and advocacy. She is a Service Learning and Partnerships Specialist for the Center for Serve-Learn-Sustain and an Adjunct Academic Professional in the School of History and Sociology at the Georgia Institute of Technology in Atlanta, Georgia.

Consequently, the design and retrofit of buildings, infrastructure, and cities will be a major part of future efforts.  The design and responsiveness of the built environment is the basis for inviting leading thinkers in the field of climate and sustainability research to help foster creativity, invention and entrepreneurship amongst participants with three primary goals: 

• Develop a baseline understanding of the current impacts and opportunities that the design, development, and responsiveness of the built environment has on climate change, and climate change has on the built environment.
• Increase understanding of the different communities and stakeholders that are involved in climate change debates via immersion in prescient topics formed around the design of the built environment: ethics, economics, health, equity, value, etc.  
• Create valuable dialogue that assists industry, government and academic leaders in understanding their role in how new environments, especially the social and habitable, can be reinvented in relation to emerging sustainability goals.

Veronica Klucik, ECON and IA 2018, is the exhibitions manager at the Museum of Design Atlanta (MODA) and co-curator of the exhibition, Learning from Nature: The Future of Design. She is drawn to the dynamism of design -- an entity both reactionary and explanatory, interdisciplinary by nature, and concerned with both function and form – and the power of storytelling and play to share big ideas, bring people together, and inspire innovation.

Veronica holds a B.S. in Economics and International Affairs from Georgia Tech and a M.S. of Sustainable Urbanism from University College London, where she found her niche in the convergence of the designed and the natural. Her big loves in life are throwing pottery, a holistic approach to wellness, and encouraging equitable climate change adaptation and resilience through community building.

Affordable clean energy, powered by Georgia’s ample solar and wind resources, has the potential to create tens of thousands of lasting jobs and to produce a majority of our state’s energy needs. Coupled with low-cost energy efficiency, renewable energy can drive Georgia job growth, keep electricity rates low, and protect our families and natural resources from harmful pollution.

SOS will be hosting a quick meeting on March 12 for all committees to meet, discuss sustainability initiatives and green meeting planning, and organize upcoming general events (possible movie night, education projects, etc.). Presentation Abstract

The mission of the Space Enabled Research Group is to advance justice in Earth's complex systems using designs enabled by space. Our message is that six types of space technology are supporting societal needs, as defined by the United Nations Sustainable Development Goals. These six technologies include satellite earth observation, satellite communication, satellite positioning, microgravity research, technology transfer, and the infrastructure related to space research and education. While much good work has been done, barriers remain that limit the application of space technology as a tool for sustainable development. The Space Enabled Research Group works to increase the opportunities to apply space technology in support of the Sustainable Development Goals and to support space sustainability. Our research applies six methods, including design thinking, art, social science, complex systems, satellite engineering and data science. We pursue our work by collaborating with development leaders who represent multilateral organizations, national and local governments, non-profits and entrepreneurial firms to identify opportunities to apply space technology in their work.  We strive to enable a more just future in which every community can easily and affordably apply space technology. The work toward our mission covers three themes: 1) Research to apply existing space technology to support the United Nations Sustainable Development Goals; 2) Research to design space systems that are accessible and sustainable; and 3) Research to study the relationship between technology design and justice. The presentation will give examples of research projects within each of these themes.

Danielle Wood's Biography

Danielle Wood serves as an assistant professor in Media Arts & Sciences and holds a joint appointment in the Department of Aeronautics & Astronautics at the Massachusetts Institute of Technology. Within the MIT Media Lab, Prof. Wood leads the Space Enabled Research Group. Prof. Wood is a scholar of societal development with a background that includes satellite design, earth science applications, systems engineering, and technology policy. In her research, Wood applies these skills to design innovative systems that harness space technology to address development challenges around the world and contribute to the long-term sustainability of outer space. Prior to serving as faculty at MIT, Professor Wood held positions at NASA Headquarters, NASA Goddard Space Flight Center, Aerospace Corporation, Johns Hopkins University, and the United Nations Office of Outer Space Affairs. Prof. Wood studied at the Massachusetts Institute of Technology, where she earned a Ph.D. in engineering systems, S.M. in aeronautics and astronautics, S.M. in technology policy, and S.B. in aerospace engineering.

On Sept. 1, 2019, Ángel Cabrera became the 12th president of the Georgia Institute of Technology. Cabrera came to Georgia Tech after serving for seven years as president of George Mason University (GMU) in Fairfax, Virginia.

Under his leadership, George Mason accounted for more than half of all enrollment growth in Virginia, increased student outcomes, and joined the top tier of research universities in the Carnegie Classification. The university established partnerships to expand online programs and international recruitment and built several new facilities. Philanthropic contributions more than doubled. In 2018, it was named by Forbes as one of America’s best midsize employers.

From 2004 to 2012, Cabrera served as president at Thunderbird School of Global Management, now part of Arizona State University. Prior to that, he was dean of IE Business School in Madrid. As a business educator, Cabrera has played a key role in advancing professional ethics, internationalization, and corporate social responsibility. As a senior advisor to the United Nations Global Compact, in 2007 he was the lead author of the “Principles for Responsible Management Education,” now adopted by more than 700 schools around the world.

Cabrera’s research has been published in leading academic journals. He has been quoted by leading global media, including The Economist, BBC, CNN, CNBC, El País, Forbes, The International Herald Tribune, and The New York Times. His op-eds have been published by The Washington Post and the international press, and he has appeared on NPR programs and PBS NewsHour.

He’s been named a “Young Global Leader” by the World Economic Forum, a “Star of Europe” by Businessweek, “Henry Crown Fellow” by the Aspen Institute, and “Great Immigrant” by the Carnegie Corporation of New York. He has received honorary degrees from Miami Dade College and Universidad Politécnica of Madrid.

Cabrera serves on the boards of the Atlanta Committee for Progress, the National Geographic Society, the Bankinter Foundation for Innovation, and Inovio, a publicly traded biotech company. For most of the past decade, he has served on the Georgia Tech Advisory Board, including a stint as its chair.

Cabrera earned his M.S. and Ph.D. in cognitive psychology from Georgia Tech, which he attended as a Fulbright Scholar. He also holds a telecommunications engineering degree (B.S. and M.S. in computer and electrical engineering) from Universidad Politécnica de Madrid.

He is married to management scholar and Georgia Tech classmate Elizabeth. Their son Alex is a recent Georgia Tech graduate and currently a Ph.D. student at Carnegie Mellon University. Their daughter Emilia is a rising junior at Harvard University. Cabrera is the first native of Spain to serve as president of an American university.

This Impact talk will be followed by a light reception.

Since 2002, the IMPACT Speaker Series has brought highly successful business leaders from a variety of industries to campus to share their experiences and give advice to students and other entrepreneurs on topics ranging from "building a venture around intellectual capital" to "successful entrepreneurship in large organizations" and "socially responsible leadership." The weekly series provides Georgia Tech students, alumni, and the Atlanta business community an opportunity to network and learn from successful entrepreneurs, venture capitalists, and notable business and non-profit leaders. The 2030 Agenda for Sustainable Development proposes a shared blueprint for peace and prosperity for people and the planet. Given their role in the socioeconomic development, it has been advocated that the designer’s social responsibility has shifted from sustainable design to social design. Meanwhile, design thinking, as a new lens to study and engage with global issues and societal transitions, has been adopted more broadly beyond commercial fields and design disciplines. In this Collaboratorium, Dr. Wei Wang, Assistant Professor in the School of Industrial Design, will introduce the World Design Organization (WDO) that advocates for Design for a Better World, promoting and sharing knowledge of industrial design-driven innovation that enhances the economic, social, cultural, and environmental quality of life. Dr Wang will focus on WDO initiatives to achieve United Nation Sustainable Development Goals (UN SDGs).

We invite faculty and students who are interested in learning about the way the design world engages with the SDGs. We aim to have a conversation about how we can engage more designers and design students in the Greater Atlanta region to study global challenges across cultures and how we can better use design thinking and method to achieve SDGs by initiating regional and the global partnerships and community engagements.

Wei Wang

As an assistant professor in School of Industrial Design, Wei Wang brings industrial experience and cultural diversity to the industrial design program at Georgia Institute of Technology. In the fusion of user-experience, human-computer interaction, and interactive products, his research interest is on the interactive technology and smart product design in applications such as self-driving cars and virtual reality, and how they interact with different communities.
Before joining the Georgia Tech faculty, Wei led the Human-Centered Research at Media Lab (Shenzhen), Hunan University, and was a visiting scholar at Queen Mary University of London on Media and Art Technology. He also worked in the Nokia Research Center from 2008 to 2012 in Beijing and Shenzhen. As a design lead, Wang contributed to emerging devices, new user interfaces, and product strategy in growth markets.
He has been granted more than 17 US/EU/CN patents in gesture interaction and mobile service. These patents have been applied in consumer products by Nokia and Microsoft (some of them are still quite active in industries, cited by Amazon, Apple, Samsung and Google etc.). Due to the successful technology transfer from his team’s ethnographic research and patent inventor, he received a Nokia Annual Achievement award in 2010.
Wang is a member of IDSA and ACM SIGCHI, and received his Ph.D. in design in 2008.
