{"496491":{"#nid":"496491","#data":{"type":"news","title":"Alumnus Wick Moorman elected to National Academy of Engineering","body":[{"value":"\u003Cp\u003ECharles \u201cWick\u201d Moorman has received one of the highest professional honors for an engineer: He is now a member of the National Academy of Engineering.\u003C\/p\u003E\u003Cp\u003EThe academy \u003Ca href=\u0022https:\/\/www.nae.edu\/Projects\/MediaRoom\/20095\/149240\/149788.aspx\u0022 target=\u0022_blank\u0022\u003Eannounced 80 new members February 8\u003C\/a\u003E as well as 22 new foreign members.\u003C\/p\u003E\u003Cp\u003EAccording to an \u003Ca href=\u0022https:\/\/www.nae.edu\/Projects\/MediaRoom\/20095\/149240\/149788.aspx\u0022 target=\u0022_blank\u0022\u003Eacademy news release\u003C\/a\u003E, Moorman was elected to membership \u201cfor leadership in the development of [a] computerized freight railroad tracking system in North America.\u201d\u003C\/p\u003E\u003Cp\u003EMoorman, who earned a bachelor\u2019s in civil engineering in 1975, \u003Ca href=\u0022http:\/\/www.nscorp.com\/content\/nscorp\/en\/news\/wick-moorman-stepsdownasexecutivechairmanofnorfolksouthernboardo.html\u0022 target=\u0022_blank\u0022\u003Erecently retired\u003C\/a\u003E as chairman and chief executive officer of \u003Ca href=\u0022http:\/\/nscorp.com\/content\/nscorp\/en.html\u0022 target=\u0022_blank\u0022\u003ENorfolk Southern\u003C\/a\u003E. He started with one of the firm\u2019s predecessor railroads when he was a co-op student at Georgia Tech.\u003C\/p\u003E\u003Cp\u003E\u201cAcademy membership honors those who have made outstanding contributions to \u2018engineering research, practice, or education, including, where appropriate, significant contributions to the engineering literature,\u2019\u201d \u003Ca href=\u0022https:\/\/www.nae.edu\/Projects\/MediaRoom\/20095\/149240\/149788.aspx\u0022 target=\u0022_blank\u0022\u003Ethe release said\u003C\/a\u003E, \u201cand to \u2018the pioneering of new and developing fields of technology, making major advancements in traditional fields of engineering, or developing\/implementing innovative approaches to engineering education.\u2019\u201d\u003C\/p\u003E\u003Cp\u003EMoorman will be formally inducted into the academy in October. He joins other School of Civil and Environmental Engineering alumni who are already members, including G. Wayne Clough, BSCE 1964, MSCE 1965, and John Huff, BSCE 1968.\u003C\/p\u003E\u003Cp\u003E\u003Cem\u003EMoorman will speak at Georgia Tech in March. He is scheduled to deliver the spring 2016 Hyatt Distinguished Alumni Leadership Lecture 4 p.m. March 9 in the Engineered Biosystems Building.
