Hoverboard Owners Encouraged to Keep Devices Off Campus

As students return to campus next week, those who own hoverboards are encouraged to leave them at home.

Due to ongoing safety reports involving self-balancing scooters and electric skateboards, students, faculty, and staff are asked not to bring these items on campus. The devices should not be operated, charged, or stored in any campus building.

Recent news reports have highlighted fire safety concerns with hoverboards. Students, faculty, and staff who own one are encouraged to review these safety guidelines provided by the National Fire Protection Association.

Those who already have a hoverboard on campus should take it home or follow U.S. Postal Service guidelines for shipping the device if needed. (At this time, the Postal Service only allows the shipment of hoverboards using Standard Post/Parcel Select that travels via ground transportation.)

Georgia Tech will continue to monitor the ongoing federal investigation regarding hoverboard safety and may make future policy decisions based on the outcome and recommendations of this review.

Questions or concerns can be directed to Campus Fire Marshal Larry Labbe at fire@gatech.edu.
