Sunday, Nov. 22: "From Herndon Homes to two Georgia Domes: 100 Years of Westside History"

From Herndon Homes to two Georgia Domes: 100 Years of Westside History
When: Sunday, November 22 12:00 - 2:00pm
Where: 550 Lindsay Street, Atlanta GA, 30314

We would like to invite you to a showcasing of our exhibit, From Herndon Homes to two Georgia Domes: 100 Years of Westside History, at the Lindsey Street Baptist Church on Sunday, November 22, 2015 from 12pm to 2pm, 550 Lindsay Street, Atlanta GA, 30314.

The Historic Westside Cultural Arts Council</a> and the Participatory Publics Lab at Georgia Tech have been collaborating on a project to put two oral history projects in dialogue with one another and with the larger arc of the last 100 years of English Avenue and Vine City history.

This is partly a story of the effects of two stadiums and community responses to them. In 1988 a group of Booker T. Washington high school students interviewed 13 residents of Vine City about the plans for the 1992 Georgia Dome. In 2015 Community Historians interviewed 10 residents, policymakers and community leaders about the 2017 Georgia Dome and their memories of the neighborhood. These interviews have been laced together with historical analysis and archival material. It is our hope that this exhibit, meant to give voice and power to the residents of English Avenue and Vine City, reveals the complexity of history and honors the power of memory in shaping it.

Join us now as we go public with our work and as we continue working to collect stories uncovering the rich and complex history of Atlanta's Westside communities.
