This is the first event of the 2026-2027 academic year for the CTRL+CM Speaker Series, presented by Georgia Tech's Collective Impact of Creative Technology (CICT) Program. This interdisciplinary conversation explores how advances in artificial intelligence are transforming the ways we engage with history, memory, and historical figures.

The discussion will feature Joel Silverman, creator of the GT Arts Einstein Project; La'Neice Littleton, Senior Historian and Director of Community Collaborations at the Atlanta History Center; and Brian Magerko, Regents' Professor and James and Mary Wesley Chair for New Media Studies at Georgia Tech. As advances in artificial intelligence enable the recreation of voices, personalities, and perspectives from the past, new questions emerge about history, memory, authenticity, and representation. This interdisciplinary conversation will bring together scholars and practitioners to explore how these technologies are shaping how we teach, learn, preserve, and engage with history.

The discussion will feature Joel Silverman, who will share insights from his innovative GT Arts Einstein Project, which explores how AI can create new forms of interaction with historical figures; La'Neice Littleton, Senior Historian & Director of Community Collaborations at the Atlanta History Center; and Brian Margeko, Regents' Professor and James and Mary Wesley Chair for New Media Studies.

BIO
I have always been fascinated with the universal forces that make things move and behave the way they do at any scale. My early fascination grew into an intellectual need to explain these phenomena, underpinning my interest in mechanical and biomedical engineering. It was my father’s heart attack in the first year of my PhD, where his blood vessels were occluded by clots, that taught me the shear force of blood flow has a critical effect. I was convinced that my research should solve real-world problems. These days I apply my expertise to understand how some specialised proteins in our blood can actually sense force to enable the development of new treatments and preventative measures that will reduce the loss of life.

Bio: Ferdous Alam is an Assistant Professor in the George W. Woodruff School of Mechanical Engineering at the Georgia Institute of Technology and an affiliated faculty member of ML@GT. He is also a core faculty member at the Institute for Robotics and Intelligent Machines (IRIM). He leads the Inference Lab, where his research focuses on the computational foundations of AI-driven engineering design and robotic manufacturing, including generative modeling of mechanical systems, representation learning for 3D geometry, and robot learning for manufacturing tasks. Before joining Georgia Tech, Dr. Alam was a postdoctoral researcher at MIT, and he previously received his PhD from The Ohio State University. His research has been recognized with several Best Paper Awards at leading ASME conferences, as well as the Google Research Scholar Award in Applied Science.

Bio: Enric Boix-Adsera is an assistant professor of statistics and data science. His parents are originally from Barcelona, and he grew up mostly in Princeton, New Jersey. Before coming to Wharton, he earned a doctorate in electrical engineering and computer science from MIT.

Boix-Adsera studies the learning processes of artificial intelligence models, such as ChatGPT, with the goal of improving their efficiency and reliability.

Bio:  Hal Daumé III is a professor of computer science with appointments in the Maryland Language Science Center and the University of Maryland Institute for Advanced Computer Studies, where he is also the director of TRAILS. In addition to fairness and natural language processing, his research focuses on understanding computational properties of learning and language as well as trustworthy AI.

Title: Fast Radio Bursts: What Millisecond Flashes Reveal About Neutron Stars, Space Plasma, and Cosmology

Abstract:
Fast radio bursts are among the most luminous coherent radio signals in the Universe, releasing enormous radio luminosities on millisecond timescales. Their discovery has opened a new window onto highly magnetized neutron stars, relativistic plasma physics, and the distribution of matter across cosmic distances. In this talk I will describe how FRBs have evolved from a phenomenological mystery into a quantitative probe of compact-object engines and intervening plasma. I will discuss the evidence connecting at least some FRBs to highly magnetized neutron stars (magnetars), the constraints imposed by energetics, repetition, burst durations, host environments, and multiwavelength limits, and the theoretical challenges of producing coherent emission with such high brightness temperatures. I will then show how the same signals can be used as backlights for cosmic plasma, including the intergalactic medium and small-scale plasma structures near the source. I will argue that FRBs are emerging as a bridge between neutron-star magnetospheres, relativistic outflows, and cosmology.

Biological membranes perform diverse functions, including molecular transport, chemical transformation, and cellular communication, through the coordinated actions of lipids and membrane proteins. Reproducing such functions with synthetic materials remains a central challenge at the interface of polymer chemistry, supramolecular science, and chemical biology. In this seminar, I will present our efforts to construct synthetic membrane functions using polymer assemblies. First, I will describe the development of polymer-based molecularly permeable vesicles, focusing on the mechanisms that govern membrane permeability and the molecular design principles required to control transmembrane transport. I will then introduce polymer-based artificial ion channels designed to mediate ion transport across lipid bilayers. Finally, I will discuss amphiphilic random copolymers that associate with lipid membranes to form polymer-rich domains. These membrane-associated polymer assemblies provide a platform for integrating molecular transport with catalytic transformation, thereby serving as synthetic analogues of multifunctional membrane proteins.  I will also highlight their extension toward cancer-related therapeutic applications.

Together, these studies illustrate how polymer assemblies can be used to create programmable membrane functions, from molecular transport to chemical transformation, in biomimetic and biological environments.

ABSTRACT
Deubiquitylases (DUBs) are a large family of enzymes that remove ubiquitin or ubiquitin chains from substrate proteins. Similar to other components of the UPS, DUBs have been associated with disease and pursued as drug targets. Despite enthusiasm around targeting DUBs both with inhibitors as well as DUBTACs, there remain unanswered fundamental questions around substrates and substrate scope as well as how DUBs work at a detailed mechanistic level. The overarching goal of our lab is to develop chemical tools that can be deployed to study basic function and translational potential of DUBs. Our platform integrates DUB library synthesis, medicinal chemistry, biochemistry, high-throughput screening, chemoproteomics, chemical genomics, structural biology, target validation and cancer biology. I will discuss recent discoveries enabled by our platform including new mechanism-of-action ligands for DUBs and their study in rare disease as well as new insights into DUB interplay with other components of the UPS.

BIO
Sara Buhrlage is an Associate Professor holding joint appointments in the Dana-Farber Cancer Institute department of Cancer Biology and the Harvard Medical School department of Biological Chemistry and Molecular Pharmacology. Buhrlage is a leader in harnessing deubiquitylases (DUBs) as emergent drug targets, where her lab has pioneered new approaches for interrogating DUB function, new insights into the chemical tractability of DUBs, and mapping the therapeutic potential of DUBs in cancer. In addition to research, she is dedicated to graduate education, holding leadership roles in multiple graduate programs and teaching graduate level courses. More recently, she has become involved in biotech and company creation as a scientific founder of Entact Bio. Buhrlage earned a Doctor of Philosophy in organic chemistry from the University of Michigan and completed a post-doctoral fellowship at the Broad Institute.

This seminar will present research that integrates numerical modeling, field observations, and remote sensing to improve understanding and prediction of coastal hazards and to inform resilience strategies. Examples from the southeastern United States will illustrate how process-based hydrodynamic models are being advanced toward high-resolution, probabilistic, and real-time predictions of coastal flooding. Field observations and UAV-based methods provide complementary measurements of coastal systems at scales that are difficult to resolve, helping investigate processes within marshes, barrier islands, and other dynamic coastal environments.

The seminar will also explore how these capabilities can be translated from hazard characterization into resilience design. Ongoing research integrates observations and models across scales to quantify the protective function of natural coastal systems and evaluate nature-based and hybrid solutions for flood and shoreline protection, including applications at coastal military installations. Taken together, this work illustrates opportunities to connect understanding of coastal processes, hazard prediction, and engineering implementation to support more resilient coastal systems.

Okorie "OkCello" Johnson is an Atlanta-based cellist, composer, looper, improviser, and storyteller who has been featured on the Tamron Hall Show, held a Kennedy Center Office Hours Artist Residency, presented at the Democratic Republic of Congo's 2022 Biennale, and co-composed and performed Liminal: An Atlanta Concerto with the Georgia Symphony Orchestra. He has scored an Emmy award-winning documentary, Imperfect Alibi; composed the original score for American Voices Against Apartheid, which premiered at the Apartheid Museum in Johannesburg before moving to the Kennedy Center; and scored a Suzi Bass Award-winning children's theatre production, Head to Toe for Alliance Theatres’ Theater for the Very Young.

His four studio albums — Liminal, Resolve, Beacon, and his most recent, Funny How Things Work Out (October 2025) — mark the milestones of an artist who has never stopped pushing. From concert halls to corporate keynotes, his cello has taken him everywhere. In 2024, that included Pixar in Oakland. In 2025, he headlined the Johns Creek Juneteenth Celebration, performed at the Aspen Institute Business Summit, and completed two concert voyages aboard the Ritz-Carlton Ilma superyacht. So far in 2026, he has taken his show to the Midwest, the Pacific Northwest, and Alaska — headlining performing arts centers in Rolla, MO, Eugene, OR, Fairbanks and Anchorage, AK to enthusiastic full houses.

He has opened for Maxwell, performed with India.Arie, De La Soul, and Big Boi of OutKast. Additionally, he regularly delivers keynote addresses and performances for organizations such as Morgan Stanley, Intuit, and the LA Unified School District. He is also the inspiration behind Lil' Okorie and the Magic Cello, a children's picture book celebrating the transformative power of music, drawn from his childhood origin story as a cellist and the impact of his live performances.

Mario Marchese, is a first-generation Italian-American magician and maker born and raised just outside of New York City. He is a self-taught performer and robot maker with a deep love for art. Mario has been a featured guest on The Tonight Show with Jimmy Fallon, Sesame Street, and beyond, and has published two books for kids via Make: Magazine, on magic and making. Much of the year, he and his family tour the world with the show, road-schooling their children along the way.

For over three decades, Jazz at Lincoln Center has been a leading advocate for jazz, culture, and arts education globally. Artist’s bio: 

Kate Kortum

Kate Kortum is a 23-year-old breakout jazz vocalist from Houston TX. Kortum has a unique, warm sound that is unlike any else - she takes be-bop, blues, songbook, and musical theatre and combines it with captivating lyrics to make a unique experience for audiences searching for the newest jazz sound. She began her love for jazz and music at Houston's legendary High School for the Performing and Visual arts where she concentrated on her studies in flute and saxophone but ultimately fell in love with singing. Her debut album "Good Woman”, released in September 2023 on Bandstand Presents, garnered over 1 million streams just one month after release. The album, now at over 3.5 million streams, reimagines and takes back standards written by men from the perspective of women through imaginative arrangements and interpretations. Kortum is set to release her sophomore album "Wild Woman", a sequel to "Good Woman", in August of 2025. Kortum has collected an impressive number of accolades in her short career including numerous Downbeat Magazine Awards and National YoungArts awards. She has performed at many historic venues including the Newport Jazz Festival, SXSW Festival, Mezzrow, Dizzy’s, Blue Note, Birdland Jazz Club, and at Jazz At Lincoln Center with the world-renowned Jazz at Lincoln Center Orchestra. Kortum has worked with fine musicians like Cyrille Aimée, Sheila Jordan, Peter Bernstein, Benny Benack III, and Wynton Marsalis. Kortum received her undergraduate degree in jazz voice at the University of Miami and her masters degree from the Juilliard School.  

David Marino

David Marino, finalist from Canada’s “The Voice”, is a singer making headway internationally, performing at prestigious venues and jazz clubs across North America. Fresh off releasing his debut EP, “The Debut Sessions”, Marino performs regularly at jazz clubs across Canada, the United States and Europe. Marino has made himself a home at the iconic Birdland Jazz Club in New York, with musical director Billy Stritch, and recently completed dates in California, Florida, Germany, France, Italy and the UK.

Camille A. Brown is a prolific Black female Director and choreographer whose work taps into both ancestral and contemporary stories to capture a range of deeply personal experiences and cultural narratives of African American identity. Through the medium of dance, she is successfully balancing careers in Stage, TV, and Film. She is the Artistic Director and Founder of her company, Camille A. Brown & Dancers (CABD). Her trilogy on race, culture, and identity has won accolades: Mr. TOL E. RAncE (2012) was honored with a Bessie Award in 2014, and a 2003 Bessie Award nomination for Outstanding Revival; BLACK GIRL: Linguistic Play (2015) was Bessie-nominated; and ink (2017) premiered at The Kennedy Center, to was performed at The Apollo Theater in 2022, and has received critical acclaim. She received a Bessie Award nomination for her latest work, I AM (2024), in 2025. In 2026, CABD will celebrate its 20th anniversary!
