Abstract: Neural interface technologies provide new opportunities to assist and augment human behaviors. For instance, muscle activity can be transformed into commands for an assistive device for people with disabilities or provide richer control for a computer than interfaces like mice and keyboards. Connecting signals from the nervous system to an external device in this way presents users with a new, potentially unintuitive, mapping between their movements and those of the device. Users often change their behavior as they learn to control neural interfaces, and many neural interfaces leverage machine learning to let the device adapt to the users. This co-learning creates complex and high-throughput interactions between algorithms and the nervous system. In my talk, I’ll present recent research in my lab demonstrating that the algorithms we use in neural interfaces influence neural computations and user learning. I will then present new computational frameworks we’ve developed to predict and shape user-algorithm interactions. These discoveries open possibilities to build neural interfaces that intelligently interact with the nervous system to assist and rehabilitate motor function across diverse users and applications.

Bio: Dr. Orsborn is a Cherng Jia and Elizabeth Yun Hwang Associate Professor in the departments of Electrical & Computer Engineering and Bioengineering at the University of Washington. Her research explores sensorimotor plasticity in brain-computer interfaces and how plasticity is influenced by the algorithms used. She completed her Ph.D. at the UC Berkeley/UCSF Joint Graduate Program in Bioengineering and her postdoctoral training at NYU’s Center for Neural Science. She recently received the NSF CAREER award, a Sloan Fellowship, and was named an Emerging Leader by the American Institute of Medical and Biological Engineering.

In addition, new students and their parents and guests will hear presentations from various campus services, student organizations, and institute departments on a variety of academic, business and social components. Most importantly, students, parents, and guests will have an opportunity to meet with faculty, staff, administrators, and current students as well as fellow incoming students and guests. Abstract: The locus coeruleus is a critical brain structure and the primary source of norepinephrine to the forebrain. Through widespread projections and actions on diverse adrenergic receptors, the locus coeruleus modulates a broad range of brain functions, and dysfunction of the LC-NE system has been implicated in several major brain disorders. In Alzheimer’s disease, for example, the locus coeruleus is the first brain structure to exhibit characteristic pathology, decades before the onset of clinical symptoms. In this seminar, Dr. Wang will discuss neurotechnologies designed to enhance and restore brain function through targeted control of the LC-NE system. He will present findings showing how direct stimulation of this system improves information processing in the sensory thalamus and enhances perceptual behavior in rodents, then describe translational work testing vagus nerve stimulation as a substitute for direct locus coeruleus stimulation. He will also share results demonstrating that non-invasive transcutaneous vagus nerve stimulation improves auditory acuity and speech-in-noise performance in humans, and conclude with recent work on how noradrenergic and cholinergic signaling interact in the prefrontal cortex to mediate inhibitory control of impulsive actions. Taken together, these studies suggest that neural stimulation targeting the LC-NE system may offer a promising strategy for enhancing and restoring brain function in both health and disease.

Bio: Dr. Qi Wang received his first Ph.D. in Robotics from Harbin Institute of Technology, China, and his second Ph.D. in Electrical and Computer Engineering from McGill University, Canada, in 1998 and 2007, respectively. He completed postdoctoral training in Neuroscience at Harvard University from 2006 to 2008. Before joining Columbia University in January 2013, he held a research faculty position in the Department of Biomedical Engineering at the Georgia Institute of Technology and Emory University. His research interests include neuromodulation, neural coding, brain-machine interfaces, and biomedical instrumentation. He has received numerous honors, including the NSF CAREER Award, the IEEE EMBS Early Career Achievement Award, the Young Investigator Award from the Brain and Behavior Foundation, and Best Paper Awards at the 14th IEEE Haptics Symposium.

Title: Developing Computational Judgment in the Age of AI

Abstract: AI is changing not only how computational work is learned and produced, but also how competence in that work can be evaluated. As AI-supported tools and agentic workflows increasingly shape coding, analysis, modeling, simulation, and explanation, computational education faces an important question: What does it mean to demonstrate competence when final outputs no longer fully reveal the reasoning, verification, and decisions behind the work?

In this talk, Dr. Gaeun (Gwenn) Seo introduces computational judgment as a working construct for studying learners’ ability to evaluate, verify, adapt, and communicate computational outputs and decisions in AI-mediated environments. Drawing on her research in learning systems, competency development, and professional formation in STEM and computational contexts, she connects this construct to broader questions about how students develop and demonstrate computational competence as work changes. The talk outlines a human-centered research agenda for making computational competence more visible, assessable, and responsive to emerging forms of AI-mediated computational learning and work.

Bio: Gaeun (Gwenn) Seo studies how students and professionals develop competence, judgment, and professional direction as AI and computational tools reshape learning and work. Her current research focuses on AI-mediated computational learning and work, computational judgment, STEM doctoral education, and competency development and assessment. She is currently an Academic Professional and Director of Graduate Career Development at Georgia Tech, with promotion to Senior Academic Professional effective August 2026, and serves as Co-PI and research lead on a five-year NSF Innovation in Graduate Education grant studying flexible funding models, industry engagement, internships, and STEM Ph.D. training. Dr. Seo has taught, designed, and evaluated graduate and professional learning experiences across Georgia Tech, Princeton University, Cornell University and Weill Cornell Medicine, and the University of Illinois at Urbana–Champaign. Her teaching has been recognized through “Teacher Ranked as Excellent by Students” honors at both UIUC and Weill Cornell Medicine, and her scholarship has appeared in peer-reviewed journals including the Journal of Career Development, International Journal of Doctoral Studies, and Journal of Further and Higher Education. Her teaching, leadership, and service have received major recognition, including the Georgia Tech Graduate Student Government Association’s Faculty of the Year Award and the Career Services Excellence Award from the National Association of Colleges and Employers (NACE). She earned her Ph.D. from the University of Illinois at Urbana–Champaign, where her dissertation research received the College of Education’s Hardie Dissertation Award.

K-12 educators are invited to explore the intersection of arts, design, and emerging technologies during the CREATE Tech STEAM Institute, a three-day professional learning experience hosted by CEISMC at Georgia Tech from June 8–10, 2026, on Georgia Tech’s campus.

Designed for educators across STEM and fine arts disciplines, the institute will focus on hands-on arts integration strategies, project-based learning, and design thinking aligned with the Georgia Department of Education’s new Creative Industry pathways. Participants will also engage with emerging postsecondary opportunities, including Georgia Tech’s new Bachelor of Science degree in Arts, Entertainment and Creative Technologies launching in Fall 2026.

The program includes keynote speakers, collaborative workshops, Lunch and Learn sessions, field experiences at arts institutions and makerspaces, and dedicated time for educators to develop standards-aligned STEAM lesson plans.

  In this session, Element will provide a technical overview of the AVITI platform family. AVITI delivers dependable, cost-effective NGS for foundational applications including gene expression profiling, single-cell sequencing, and targeted sequencing, with straightforward operation suited for shared cores and research labs. AVITI24 enables higher-resolution multiomic assays and Direct In Sample Sequencing, integrating spatial RNA, protein, and morphology readouts in a single run. Attendees will be introduced to VITARI, the world’s first high-throughput bench-top sequencer, designed for scalable performance and maximum flexibility.
• ibidi Part 1 - Free Partnership Offerings for Core Facilities and ibidi Overview
  This session includes a general review of ibidi products for live cell imaging, immunofluorescence, and 3D cell culture. Additionally, it will cover ibidi partnerships with Core Facilities.
• ibidi Part 2 - NEW Micro Illumination System – Benchtop Microfluidics and Microstructuring
  An informational session and live demo of the benchtop UV illumination device. The session will cover applications like 3D microstructuring, light-induced wound healing, micropatterning, hydrogel-structuring, and more.

This workshop is intended for students, faculty, and staff at Georgia Tech and guests interested in learning more about patent searching. The session will cover patent classification systems and focus on the following two patent databases: Espacenet (Open access) and PatSnap (Georgia Tech only). We will provide an overview of the database platforms and examine the unique search features of each database. Attendees are encouraged to follow along with tool demonstrations.

This course prepares you for the basics of transportation operations and analysis. Throughout the course, you’ll review the key elements of transportation such as modes of transportation, transportation procurement, cost minimization techniques, the role of ports in global logistics, and international trade terms. There will also be discussion around emerging trends in North American transportation markets, emerging techniques, and greenhouse gas emissions reduction.

With more than nine years of experience in early-stage venture investing, including prior roles in the Bay Area and at Toyota Ventures’ frontier tech fund, Erin brings a seasoned investor’s perspective to innovation, commercialization, and startup growth. In this conversation, she will share insights into venture investing, Georgia Tech’s entrepreneurial ecosystem, and the role GTF Ventures plays in supporting innovation emerging from campus. 

Attendees will gain a better understanding of fund operations, capital raising, and what investors look for in early-stage opportunities. This session will be especially valuable for innovators, founders, and anyone interested in the intersection of research, entrepreneurship, and investment at Georgia Tech.

Erin Keller is Venture Fund Lead at the Georgia Tech Foundation, where she leads diligence, investment recommendations, and post-deal support. She previously spent more than six years in the Bay Area investing in early-stage companies, most recently at Toyota Ventures’ frontier tech fund. Erin began her career at a Medtech Venture Studio in Atlanta and holds a degree in Biomedical Engineering from Georgia Tech.

PACE has recently expanded containerized software workflows on Phoenix and Hive. Users are now able download, build, and run their own containers with Apptainer, a container runtime that is widely used in HPC centers. In this workshop, you will learn how to use Apptainer to:

• Easily download and run Docker images from DockerHub and other registries.
• Build new images using an Apptainer definition file, similarly to a Dockerfile.
• Learn tips and tricks for portable software workflows
