More than 20 students participated in the event, traveling from schools in Decatur, Grady, Miller, and Thomas counties to take part in the competition.

The event is the first for the newly established Southwest Georgia regional FIRST LEGO League Challenge. Georgia Tech is the affiliate partner for FIRST LEGO League Challenge with the Center for Education Integrating Science, Mathematics, and Computing (CEISMC) facilitating the program for the state of Georgia. FIRST LEGO League introduces STEM learning to children ages 4-16 through fun, exciting hands-on learning. Participants gain real-world problem-solving experiences through a guided global robotics program using LEGO technology, helping today’s students, families, and educators build a better future together.

Participating workshop teachers focused on building student STEM skills in preparation for participating in the FIRST LEGO League Challenge competition. The workshop focused on teaching students coding and other current STEM skills needed to participate in the competition as well as launch students into high-tech careers in their communities.

“With so many manufacturers and high-tech opportunities opening in Southwest Georgia, it’s important to have students engaging now in building the skills they will need to get those good, high-paying industry jobs in the near future,” said Danyelle Larkin, director of K-12 InVenture Prize. “We see this program as an anchor for the region, establishing a STEM school-to-manufacturing pathway that will strengthen the communities in this part of the state. So, yes, this is a robotics competition, but it is really more than that. It’s something that has the potential to uplift entire communities. And that is pretty cool.”

The inaugural FIRST LEGO League Challenge will be held on December 14 at Southern Regional Technical College in Thomasville.

—Randy Trammell, CEISMC Communications

  <status>1</status> <created>1732302041</created> <gmt_created>2024-11-22 19:00:41</gmt_created> <changed>1732302961</changed> <gmt_changed>2024-11-22 19:16:01</gmt_changed> <promote>0</promote> <sticky>0</sticky> <teaser>Georgia Tech's K-12 InVenture Prize/Georgia AIM team hosted the inaugural pre-FIRST LEGO League regional practice in Bainbridge.</teaser> <type>news</type> <sentence>Georgia Tech's K-12 InVenture Prize/Georgia AIM team hosted the inaugural pre-FIRST LEGO League regional practice in Bainbridge.</sentence>

On October 29, Georgia Tech’s K-12 InVenture Prize/Georgia AIM team, in collaboration with Southern Regional Technical College and the Southwest Georgia Regional Commission, hosted the inaugural pre-FIRST LEGO League regional practice session in Bainbridge, with over 20 students from Decatur, Grady, Miller, and Thomas counties participating.

  <dateline>2024-11-25T00:00:00-05:00</dateline> <iso_dateline>2024-11-25T00:00:00-05:00</iso_dateline> <gmt_dateline>2024-11-25 00:00:00</gmt_dateline>

  <sidebar></sidebar>

  <location></location> <contact></contact> <boilerplate></boilerplate> <boilerplate_text></boilerplate_text> <media>
675724
      </media> <hg_media>
          <nid>675724</nid> <type>image</type>
FIRST LEGO League introduces STEM learning to children ages 4-16 through fun, exciting hands-on learning.

FIRST LEGO League introduces STEM learning to children ages 4-16 through fun, exciting hands-on learning.

                      <image_name>FIRST-LEGO-League-SW-GA-2024_0.jpg</image_name> <image_path>/sites/default/files/2024/11/22/FIRST-LEGO-League-SW-GA-2024_0.jpg</image_path> <image_full_path>http://hg.gatech.edu//sites/default/files/2024/11/22/FIRST-LEGO-League-SW-GA-2024_0.jpg</image_full_path> <image_740>http://hg.gatech.edu/sites/default/files/styles/740xx_scale/public/sites/default/files/2024/11/22/FIRST-LEGO-League-SW-GA-2024_0.jpg?itok=relrHOZF</image_740> <image_mime>image/jpeg</image_mime> <image_alt>FIRST LEGO League introduces STEM learning to children ages 4-16 through fun, exciting hands-on learning.</image_alt> <created>1732302471</created> <gmt_created>2024-11-22 19:07:51</gmt_created> <changed>1732302930</changed> <gmt_changed>2024-11-22 19:15:30</gmt_changed>
      </hg_media> <related> </related> <files> </files> <groups> <group id="361651">Center for Education Integrating Science, Mathematics and Computing (CEISMC)</group> <group id="445881">Georgia FIRST LEGO League</group> <group id="592706">K-12 InVenture Challenge</group> </groups> <categories>
Community

Education

Robotics
      </categories> <news_terms> <term tid="42901">Community</term> <term tid="42911">Education</term> <term tid="152">Robotics</term> </news_terms> <keywords> <keyword tid="167564">State of Georgia FIRST LEGO League Challenge</keyword> <keyword tid="177613">K-12 InVenture Prize</keyword> <keyword tid="176787">K-12 InVenture Prize @ Georgia Tech</keyword> <keyword tid="411">CEISMC</keyword> <keyword tid="191642">Georgia AIM</keyword> </keywords> <core_research_areas> </core_research_areas> <news_room_topics> </news_room_topics> <files></files> <related></related> <userdata></userdata></node><node id="663971">
Georgia Tech volunteers sought for FIRST LEGO League State Championship to be held in February
  <uid>34907</uid>

Georgia Tech’s Center for Education Integrating Science, Mathematics, and Computing (CEISMC) is looking for Georgia Tech faculty, staff, and student volunteers to help with FIRST LEGO League’s (FLL) state championship, which will be held on February 11, 2023 on campus. FLL introduces youth ages 9 to 14 to the fun and excitement of science and technology while building their self-confidence, knowledge, and life skills.  Although the program involves LEGO robotics, FLL goes a step further, with teams examining real-life problems and developing innovative solutions. During this year’s tournament, student teams will be tackling the issue of sustainable energy.

Since 2003, Georgia Tech has been an Affiliate Partner for FIRST LEGO League.
