This workshop is intended for students, faculty, and staff at Georgia Tech and guests interested in learning more about patent searching. The session will cover patent classification systems and focus on the following two patent databases: Espacenet (Open access) and PatSnap (Georgia Tech only). We will provide an overview of the database platforms and examine the unique search features of each database. Attendees are encouraged to follow along with tool demonstrations.

Patents provide valuable and cutting-edge information for innovators and researchers. This workshop will begin with a brief introduction to intellectual property and then will focus on patents. The presenter will demonstrate how to conduct preliminary patent searches using publicly accessible patent tools. Attendees will have an opportunity to participate in hands-on learning activities.

Abstract: In the landscape of Artificial Intelligence (AI), two complementary paradigms have emerged: cloud AI, which relies on centralized computing infrastructure, and edge AI, which performs intelligence directly on distributed devices at the network edge. Driven by the rapid growth of wearables, drones, and other Internet-of Things (IoT) devices, edge AI is increasingly pervasive and transforming the way intelligent services are delivered in everyday life.

This talk will focus on two key components of the edge AI design stack that critically influence the performance and energy efficiency of AI acceleration. First, we will discuss hardware-aware Neural Architecture Search (NAS), an automated framework for jointly optimizing neural network architectures and computing architectures for target workloads and deployment constraints. We will then explore recent advances in digital Compute-In Memory (CIM) and Compute-In- Logic (CIL) circuits, highlighting how architectural and circuit-level innovations can substantially improve the efficiency of AI computation. Finally, we will share how these approaches could potentially provide a practical pathway toward energy-efficient AI systems for next-generation edge platforms.

Bio: Bo Wang received the Ph.D. degree in electrical and electronic engineering from Nanyang Technological University, Singapore. In 2020, she joined Singapore University of Technology and Design, Singapore as an Assistant Professor. Her research interests span various aspects of energy-efficient architecture and circuit design, including machine learning acceleration, neuromorphic computing, compute- in-memory, and design automation for hardware-software co-optimization. She authored and co-authored many papers published at international journals and conference proceedings, including TNNLS, JSSC, TCAS-I, A-SSCC, DAC, ISLPED, etc.\

Prof. Wang received the Distinguished Design Award at the IEEE Asian Solid-State Circuits Conference (A-SSCC) in 2023.She was also a recipient of the Best Paper Award at the ACM/IEEE International Symposium on Low Power Electronics and Design (ISLPED) in 2023 and the International SoC Design Conference (ISOCC) in 2024 and 2014. She is an IEEE senior member.

Mechanical Characterization of the Posterior Eye with Physics-Informed Deep Learning and Transcriptomics

Glaucoma is the leading cause of irreversible blindness worldwide, and the only modifiable risk factor is elevated intraocular pressure, which is often associated with remodeling of the posterior eye. Females represent a higher proportion of glaucoma patients than males, and early menopause has emerged as a sex-specific risk factor. Preclinical studies show that surgical menopause alters the biomechanical properties of the posterior eye, yet the underlying mechanisms and longitudinal impact remain unknown, representing a significant knowledge gap. This proposal addresses this gap by 1) developing a deep learning tool to segment posterior eye structures from optical coherence tomography (OCT) images, 2) reformulating the Virtual Fields Method as a machine-learning problem to infer tissue mechanical properties, 3) extending this framework to in vivo OCT displacement data to quantify tissue mechanical properties, and 4) characterizing the transcriptomic changes induced by early menopause in the posterior eye to identify candidate genes and pathways underlying mechanical changes and the association with an increased risk of developing glaucoma. The proposed research will provide a computational framework for inferring posterior eye mechanical properties from OCT images, expand understanding of the timing and mechanisms linking early menopause to glaucoma risk, and identify candidate molecular pathways for future mechanistic and therapeutic study.

Bringing Universal Diagnostics to the Point-of-Care: Raman Spectroscopy and Machine Learning

Raman spectroscopy of biofluids, cells, and tissues can diagnose a wide range of diseases – including diabetes, malaria, tuberculosis, celiac disease, cancer, and Alzheimer's – and quantify analytes such as glucose, albumin, and urea. This versatility has led to its description as a potential “universal” medical diagnostic. This thesis advances this vision along three fronts.

First, it introduces a method to improve the biological state resolution inferable by Raman imaging. While existing approaches commonly use spatial averaging to obtain a single spectrum, this work uses nonlinear dimensionality reduction to incorporate spatial information into the inferred cell state. Applied to imaging of egg maturation of a live C. elegans with BCARS – a highly sensitive and reproducible Raman imaging technique – this approach enables state resolution comparable to transcriptomics. This establishes the possibility that BCARS imaging combined with machine learning could serve as an omics surrogate in live cells.

Second, this machine learning approach is generalized into ScaleMAP, a dimensionality reduction technique that preserves local scale information typically erased by state-of-the-art methods such as UMAP, while retaining their neighborhood quality. Across diverse datasets, ScaleMAP recovers important structures that these techniques miss, including rare spectral “spikes” in Raman imaging, transitional "bridge" cells connecting distinct cell types in transcriptomics, and density structure spanning 17 orders of magnitude in flow cytometry.

Third, this thesis confronts the central barrier to real-world Raman diagnostics: the absence of an instrument that is simultaneously sensitive, reproducible, and affordable. The Raman diagnostics literature commonly uses instruments such as the Renishaw inVia Qontor, which can cost upwards of $200,000, yet exhibit limited reproducibility. This work demonstrates a proof-of-concept low-cost biofluid Raman spectrometer that surpasses the Qontor in both sensitivity and repeatability, at a current bill-of-materials of $1,300, with a roadmap to $150. It then leverages this repeatability to develop a proof-of-concept low-cost field calibration method for reproducibility across point-of-care centers.

Together, these contributions advance Raman diagnostics in two respects: the diagnostic information extractable from each measurement, and the translational path to obtaining measurements reliably in the real world.

The requirement for high levels of customer service, increasing numbers of SKUs and high labor costs have dramatically increased the complexity of warehouse operations. It is no longer sufficient to manage a warehouse based on a simple, arbitrary “ABC” classification of SKUs, which treats all those in a category as if they were identical. Instead, each decision – such as where to store or where to pick product – must be based on careful engineering and economic analysis. Each SKU must identify its own cheapest, fastest path through the warehouse to the customer and then compete with all the other SKUs for the necessary resources. This results in warehouse operations that are finely tuned to patterns of customer orders and maximally efficient. Learn the concepts necessary to address modern warehouse trade-offs between space and time in optimizing and managing your warehouse.

It will have a hands-on component using the Bridges-2 computing platform at the Pittsburgh Supercomputing Center.

Paper Craft Fundamentals is a hands-on workshop that introduces participants to essential techniques in paper-based art practices, including cutting, folding, scoring, rolling, weaving, and layering. Through guided demonstrations and self-directed experimentation, participants will develop a foundational understanding of these processes while exploring their potential for variation, combination, and personal expression.

The workshop is inspired by The Craft of Paper: Contemporary Takes on Tradition, an exhibition that examines how artists today are reinterpreting established paper craft techniques within contemporary art and design contexts. By the end of the workshop, they will have developed new technical skills as well as a deeper understanding of how paper-based practices continue to expand within contemporary creative fields.
