The program also aims to improve foreign language education in Japan and to encourage international exchange at the local level by fostering ties between Japanese youth and foreign youth. The objectives of the program are being achieved by offering JET Program participants the opportunity to serve in local government offices as well as public and private elementary schools, junior high and senior high schools. Three types of jobs are:\u003C\/p\u003E\u003Cp\u003E\u003Cstrong\u003EAssistant Language Teacher\u003C\/strong\u003E \u003Cstrong\u003E(ALT) \u003C\/strong\u003E- ALTs are engaged in language instruction and placed mainly in local boards of education or public junior and senior high schools. There may be a very limited number of cases in which participants are placed in private junior and senior high schools. Applicants \u003Cstrong\u003Edo not need\u003C\/strong\u003E Teaching English as a Foreign Language (TEFL) certification or other education credentials, although these are beneficial.\u003C\/p\u003E\u003Cp\u003E\u003Cstrong\u003ECoordinator for International Relations (CIR)\u003C\/strong\u003E- CIRs are are engaged in internationalization activities and placed in offices of local authorities or related organizations.
