416221 news 1434630388 1475896721 <![CDATA[IPST Sponsors TAPPI International Conference on Nanotechnology]]> IPST was a sponsor of the TAPPI International Conference on Nanotechnology for Renewable Materials in Montreal, June 4-7.  The event was well attended.  Scientists from all over the world heard presentations of the latest research and most pressing challenges on the production, characteristics, and potential applications of various forms of nanocellulose fibers.  Director Norman Marsolan attended, and IPST sponsored the attendance of Professor Meisha Shofner; Dr. Shofner gave a paper, co-authored by her student Stephanie Lin, on Crystallization of Cellulose Nanocrystal/Polyhydroxybutyrate Nanocomposites[see related article under Faculty Research]. The event also featured a tour of the CelluForce crystalline nanocellulose manufacturing facility, then undergoing initial startup.  The forest industry’s Agenda 2020 Technology Alliance held its quarterly meeting of chief technology officers during the week; Dr. Marsolan serves as an affiliate member of the Alliance.

Dr. Meisha Shofner presented a paper, “Crystallization of Cellulose Nanocrystal / Polyhydroxybutyrate Nanocomposites,” at the Conference. The paper is co-authored by her student Stephanie Lin. The studies are focused on understanding how interactions of crystalline nanocellulose with polyhydroxybutyrate can modify the crystal structure of PHB and toughen the matrix and, as a result, yield improved mechanical properties.
