Goodman, who serves as co-Director of the Georgia Tech Information Security Center (GTISC) and the Center for International Strategy, Technology and Policy (CISTP), warned of a coming "tsunami" of cybersecurity issues fueled by rapidly proliferating networked devices such as mobile phones. Some 3.5 billion people worldwide—more than half of global population—now use mobile phones, Goodman said, and within five to 10 years most of those will be conducting sensitive personal and professional business through their mobile devices. This presents a tremendous opportunity for "malicious actors" to turn their attention from desktop and laptop vulnerabilities to mobile devices.

In part to combat this threat, Goodman called for the education and training of a workforce that is better versed in cyber-security. As a model, he cited the NSF's Scholarship for Service Program, which provides financial aid to U.S. citizens at universities with academic programs in cyber-security, in exchange for the pledge to work for the government post-graduation. Funded at about $10 million per year, the program has placed nearly 1,000 professionals (mostly master's degree-level) from 34 universities in government positions since 2003.

Kathy Pham, who earned her bachelor's (2007) and master's (2009) degrees in the College of Computing, and Marc Pare, a third-year mechanical engineering student, paired up to form Team Curious and entered the Imagine Cup's mashup competition. Their entry is a Web application that allows users to click on any of the eight Millennium Development Goals (MDGs), such as environmental sustainability, ending poverty and hunger, combating HIV/AIDS, etc. The mashup instantly crawls the Web and displays news and other information grouped under more specific topic headings. Titled "MDG Actors," the mashup highlights names of individual persons, and users can scroll over those people's names for pop-up menus of additional information (such as the individual's Wikipedia page, the latest relevant posts on Twitter, and other links).

In addition to mashups, the Imagine Cup features categories such as software design, embedded development and others. Competitors represent their home countries; Team Curious is the only U.S. team represented among six finalists (in fact, they were the only Americans among 15 semifinalists, as well). The worldwide finals will be held in Cairo, Egypt, from July 3-7.

"I am so excited to represent Georgia Tech with my partner Marc in this competition," Pham said. "I would love to see more Georgia Tech students enter this competition in the future and find ways to use software to change the world."

Pincombe, a junior computer science major, took first prize in the individual category of the 2009 InVenture Prize @ Georgia Tech, a competition designed by Institute faculty to foster student inventors and entrepreneurs. For his DialPrice invention—a price-check service that allows people to comparison shop without leaving a single store's aisle—Pincombe won $5,000, free patent filings by the Georgia Tech Office of Technology Licensing, and a paid summer internship to work on his invention.

"You dial a regular phone number and then enter the 12-digit UPC code on the box," Pincombe said. "DialPrice will tell you the average price, the price range and what other stores or online retailers are selling it for."

In essence, the InVenture Prize is an innovation competition. Undergraduate students can work independently or in teams to develop and present inventions judged by a panel of faculty experts. The competitors introduce their inventions, and a group of finalists advance to the public ceremony/competition (held in 2009 on March 30 in the Ferst Center for the Arts). Two winning inventions, either individuals or teams, receive:

• Cash prizes ($10,000 for first place, $5,000 for second)
• Free patent filings by the Office of Technology Licensing (each valued at $20,000)
• Opportunities for paid summer internships to work on their inventions, with invitations to free commercialization services such as funding opportunities, office space, market vetting, and mentorship by faculty and industry entrepreneurs.

Complementing Pincombe’s individual award was the team award, which went to Created and organized by faculty, the InVenture Prize’s goal is to encourage an interest in invention, innovation and entrepreneurial lifestyle among Georgia Tech students, as well as to create an infrastructure, culture, and institutional focus that galvanizes student inventiveness and inventorship.

"The InVenture Prize competition gives a foundation for my castles in the sky," said Joy Buolamwini, a Stamps President's Scholar and first-year Computational Media major with a passion for web-related technologies and an eye for design. Her AdmissionsConquered, an InVenture Prize finalist, is a web-based system that makes the college application process easier by centralizing resources and allowing users to find what is personally relevant while sharing and gaining insights.

Furst served as a judge in the 2009 InVenture Prize competition, along with the following Georgia Tech colleagues:

• Terry Blum, Tedd Munchak Chair and Professor in the College of Management, director of the Institute for Leadership and Entrepreneurship.
• David Ku, Lawrence P. Huang Endowed Chair in Engineering and Entrepreneurship and Regents' Professor, George W. Woodruff School of Mechanical Engineering and College of Management.
• Joy Laskar, Schlumberger Chair in Microelectronics, School of Electrical and Computer Engineering, and director of the Georgia Electronic Design Center.

Associate Professor Peter Ludovice, from the School of Chemical and Biomolecular Engineering, hosted the March 30 event, which also featured remarks from Georgia Tech Provost Gary Schuster and Georgia state Rep. Bob Smith (R-Watkinsville) and live musical performances by a string quartet and an acoustic guitarist.

The Network Science and Engineering (NetSE) Council, which released its conclustions in July after a year of study, was charged by the CCC with developing a comprehensive research agenda that would support better networks in the future. The group studied previous reports and held meetings and workshops that included both network specialists and other scientists from other areas of computing.

"Computer networks, and especially the Internet, have gone from research curiosity to fundamental infrastructure," Zegura wrote in the NetSE report. "In terms of societal impact, the Internet has changed the way we live, work and play, and altered our notions of democracy, education, healthcare, entertainment and commerce. In terms of its design, the Internet has shown a remarkable ability to adapt to, even inspire, changes in technologies and applications. In short, the Internet has been a powerful engine for technological innovation and societal evolution."

The report went on to list four main recommendations:

1. The funding agencies of the United States government must increase investment in research that will lead to a better Internet or risk a marginal future role.
2. Funding agencies should rebuild the experimental capabilities of networking researchers, through funding individual systems-building efforts, providing adequate and persistent shared experimental infrastructure, and supporting research that leads to continued improvements in experimental methodology. Experimental work is expensive and long-term; typical [National Science Foundation] awards are insufficient, therefore either NSF will need to change its award portfolio or other agencies will have to play a significantly increased role.
3. Funding agencies should foster and support research activities relevant to network design within the theoretical computer science community, the new Network Science community, and other theoretical disciplines.
4. Funding agencies should support a broad array of interdisciplinary research activities related to understanding the current Internet and designing future networks to include the Internet.

Members of Team Curious include Kathy Pham, a bachelor's and master's
computing graduate, and Marc Pare, an undergraduate mechanical
engineering major. The program they developed aggregates information
from traditional news sources on the Web and ultimately presents an
authoritative view.

Team Curious was selected from a total of 444 students from 149 teams
representing 70 countries and regions around the world. The Imagine Cup
2009 Worldwide Finals were held in Cairo, Egypt, and included the
following categories: Software Design, Embedded Development, Game
Development, IT Challenge, Robotics and Algorithm, MashUp, Photography,
Short Film and Design.

The five-year award, which at nearly $600,000 is 50 percent larger than a typical CAREER Award, will continue Gray's work in astrophysics, in which he's been involved since the early 1990s. He has applied computational algorithms to study formation of galaxies, determine evidence for "dark energy" in the universe, and study the formation and morphology of galaxies.

The project that won him the CAREER Award will involve creating new data structures and algorithms to scale up existing machine learning techniques to the point that they can deal with the massive datasets involved in cosmological phenomena. Gray said he will specifically explore a new data structure called a "cosine tree" to help manage the computational bottleneck that results from massive datasets. As an educational component, he said the project will test a novel approach to Ph.D. curricula.

"Building upon the successful Threads model pioneered at Georgia Tech, the innovations center around extensions of its underlying ideas of contextualization and symphonic thinking," Gray said. "[The innovations will involve] Cross-Threads, a way to curricularize cross-disciplinary inspiration through a graduate analog of the Threads concept, representing a new kind of design for a Ph.D. program in computing."

Modeled after the Pulitzer Prizes, the Burton Awards for Legal Achievement
began in 1999 as a way to honor the best writing in the legal
profession. Fiesler, who earned her M.S. in the human-computer
interaction program and whose doctoral work will be in human-centered
computing, wrote “Everything I Need to Know I Learned from Fandom: How
Existing Social Norms Can Help Shape the Next Generation of
User-Generated Content” while in law school at Vanderbilt in Nashville,
Tenn. She received her Burton Award at a ceremony at the Library of
Congress in Washington on June 15, a month after she picked up her law
degree from Vanderbilt.

“My writing draws on an eclectic mix of
education, passion and perspective--plus the breadth of my considerable
reading,” Fiesler said. “It's heartening to see that the legal
community responding to the voice I've developed, and I'm grateful to
be honored with this award."

ATLANTA (September 17, 2009)— In today's economy, unemployment rates have spiked and out-of-work professionals are forced to either join the thousands looking for jobs or seek new career paths.  Through a recent $2.5 million grant from the National Science Foundation, the Georgia Tech College of Computing will mitigate the stress of joblessness for unemployed information technology (IT) professionals over the next three years. Operation Reboot, as the project is aptly titled, will transform an initial set of 30 IT workers in Georgia into high school computing teachers. The initiative began September 1.

Operation Reboot will combine Georgia Tech's innovative high school computing teacher training program and the successful Georgia Teacher Alternative Preparation Program (GaTAPP) to pair an IT worker with an existing computing teacher. They will co-teach at least two computing classes for one year, allowing the IT professional to learn the ins and outs of a classroom and the teacher to get an education in IT. Simultaneously, the IT worker will receive an initial teaching certificate and a computer science endorsement, a special area of expertise for teachers to add on to their certification. 

"A teacher's motivation, self efficacy, job satisfaction and commitment to teaching are closely linked with their professional identity," Barbara Ericson, Director of Computing Outreach at the College of Computing and principal investigator for Operation Reboot, said.  "Through the teacher workshops at Georgia Tech, courses needed for certification, co-teaching and mentoring we will transform these IT worker's identity into that of a computing teacher."

Operation Reboot ultimately aims to improve the computing education of 4,600 students over the next three years by increasing the number of well trained computing teachers and the number of computing classes being offered. By creating highly engaging curricular materials, improving the content and educational knowledge of computing teachers, Georgia Tech expects the number of students receiving a computing education to increase by at least 30 percent. This is especially important for the economy and students interested in computing careers, as jobs in the field are expected to be some of the fastest growing through 2016.

With computing a critical component of every American business, the need for innovative, skilled IT professionals is more vital than ever. The demand for IT professionals, as predicted by the U.S. Bureau of Labor Statistics, is not currently being met by computer science enrollments in American universities and the United States still faces a tough challenge in remaining competitive in overall science and technology education.

Georgia Tech will publish results of the project and share materials with other states to serve as a model on how to successfully transform unemployed IT workers into high school computing teachers.

Zha’s project, “Robust Knowledge Acquisition from Social Media,” looks to develop techniques and methodologies for robust knowledge acquisition from collaboratively generated content produced in social environments such as question-answering forums, Wikipedia variants, or social news aggregation sites. It is part of a long-term effort of harnessing social media, in combination with traditional web search and other sources of information, for improving access to information.

Schwan's project, "Scalable Management for Exascale Systems," will try to create novel software methods and infrastructure, as well as high quality implementations of both, that jointly enable continuous, scalable and effective system monitoring and management. These new programs and architectures will be designed to facilitate effective, automated methods for continuous, online program and system monitoring, with small overheads when systems and applications function well, but at the same time, with fast reactions to unusual behaviors to prevent more extensive deleterious effects or damage.

Both awards are renewable for up to three years. Sixty projects from 46 universities in 12 countries received HP Innovation awards. The program is designed to create opportunities for colleges, universities and research institutes to conduct breakthrough collaborative research with HP.

MacIntyre will speak during a session on "Visual Computing Trends" and will discuss mobile augmented reality. The Professor-Partnership, which carries with it an unrestricted award of $30,000, is the second such honor received by a College of Computing professor. David Bader, professor of Computational Science and Engineering, received the award in 2008.

The Research Summit is one part of NVidia's GPU Technology Conference, to be held Sept. 30 to Oct. 2 in San Jose. In addition to his talk, MacIntyre also will participate in panel discussions for the conference. Founded in 1993, NVidia is one of the world's leading manufacturers of the GPU (graphics processing unit), a specialized processor designed to handle graphics-intensive computing.

The joint CRA/CCC program, funded by the National Science Foundation, allows new graduates to obtain postdoctoral positions for up to two years at host organizations, such as universities, industrial research laboratories and other organizations, that advance the field of computing and its positive impact on society. The "CIFellows" program's goal is to retain new Ph.D. holders in research and teaching, and to support intellectual renewal and diversity in the U.S. computing field.

Diakopoulos recently completely his Ph.D. in the School of Interactive Computing under adviser Irfan Essa. His research interests span human computer interaction, information visualization and multimedia content analysis, with themes from media including collaborative authorship and annotation, games and journalism. He also holds a bachelor's in computer engineering and multimedia signal processing from Brown University and an M.S. in computer science from Georgia Tech. Diakopoulos has accepted a postdoctoral position at the School of Communication and Information at Rutgers University, working in social media.

Voida finished his Ph.D. in August 2008, also from the School of Interactive Computing under adviser Beth Mynatt. His area of specialization is human-computer interaction, and his dissertation explored the design of "activity-based" user interfaces--a re-envisioning of the traditional desktop computing model designed to more closely reflect the way information workers think about and organize their work into cohesive tasks or activities in the real world. Since early 2008, he has worked as a postdoctoral fellow at the University of Calgary in Canada. With his CIFellows award, he will continue his research on activity-based computing systems at the University of California, Irvine.

The United Nations took these utopian ideas seriously enough to name them as its eight Millennium Development Goals. This caught the eye of Microsoft Corp., which in 2002 issued a challenge to the students of the world: Let’s make these happen.

And the imagining began.

In 2003, Microsoft sponsored the first Imagine Cup competition, in which computing and technology students were invited to submit innovations in a single category: software design. The big condition? Entries had to, in some way, further the realization of the UN's Millennium Development Goals (MDGs). In later years, the Imagine Cup added categories such as game design, short film, embedded development and others.

This year, a pair of Georgia Tech-educated students calling themselves Team Curious managed to imagine something just a bit better than any other team in the world. On July 7, in the land of the Sphinx, Team Curious was named the winner in the MashUp category. Some 59,000 students representing 142 countries competed in Imagine Cup 2009, and Microsoft invited 148 finalist teams to Cairo.

Team Curious won for its Web application "MDG Actors." Behind Team Curious are Kathy Pham, who earned both her bachelor’s (2007) and master's (2009) degrees from the College of Computing, and undergraduate Marc Paré, a mechanical engineering major. Not only did they come up with MDG Actors, Pham and Paré also maintained an active blog devoted to Team Curious, and they used it to present their "manifesto":

"MDG Actors is our first hi-tech composition," they wrote. "It is as much programming as it is story-telling, empathy and design. It leverages the power of emerging Web technology to provide an interactive, playful experience. Its goal is inspiration, and it provides the jumping off points for turning that inspiration into action. By itself, our website won’t overturn the 'rusting DNA' our generation faces, but we hope it at least provides the same glimmer of the future for you as it does for us. It is one of our first steps in organizing our new world for a brighter tomorrow."

Indeed, it was enough not only to get them to Cairo as the only U.S. representative in the MashUp category, but also to make them the only U.S. team to win a category.

"Travel and perks aside, it was my first time ever being in a room of so many motivated, creative students from all over the world who want to use technology to change the world," Pham said of the experience. "The energy in the presentation rooms was amazing.  It was great to exchange ideas with people, discuss how our project can advance in the future, and see why and how the other teams created their technologies."

Having a few days in Cairo wasn't bad either. No stranger to international travel—she spent a year and a half in France at the Georgia Tech-Lorraine campus while working toward her master's degree, as well as a summer in Barcelona (Spain) as an undergraduate—Pham relished her time among the pyramids. Paré also attended Georgia Tech-Lorraine in fall 2008.

"While other [Imagine Cup category finalists] required a devotion of 24 to 36 hours while in Cairo, the MashUp competition was Web-based, so we already did all of our work in advance," she said. "We had a 30-minute conversation with one of the judges and were told to go enjoy Cairo. Therefore, we had much time to meet other competitors, enjoy presentations, lie by the pool of the five-star hotel and take a trip into the city.

"Our travels include organized trips to Giza to see the pyramids and Sphinx, a 'felucca' ride down the Nile, and a visit to the Bazaar,” Pham said. "The actual awards ceremony was held on a stage in front of the pyramids!  I know all the students—myself included—were stunned.  It was a wonderful culture experience."

ATLANTA (October 6, 2009) — Georgia Computes!, a statewide program aimed at expanding the pipeline of computer science students and teachers at all education levels in Georgia, received a $1.4 million grant from the National Science Foundation (NSF) to extend the program for two more years.

Originally a three-year program, Georgia Tech's College of Computing has been working under the NSF-funded Broadening Participation in Computing (BPC) program to improve computing education throughout the state at all levels with a special focus on developing and implementing models for recruiting, mentoring and retaining students from underrepresented communities. Georgia Computes! engages groups that have not historically participated in IT education at high rates, such as minorities, women and persons with disabilities.

"After just three years of working to raise interest in computing, Georgia Computes! has reached thousands of Georgians,"  Mark Guzdial, professor in the College of Computing at Georgia Tech and principal investigator for Georgia Computes! said. "To date, Georgia Tech has exponentially increased the number of Girl Scouts participating in workshops, created eight regional summer computing camps, doubled the number of schools offering Advanced Placement Computer Science classes, doubled the number of Hispanic students taking the AP exam and have influenced a quarter of the computing programs in the University System of Georgia. Now we can maintain our momentum and gear up for the next two years thanks to the NSF."

Led by faculty, professors and graduate students from the Georgia Tech College of Computing, Georgia Computes! includes the following efforts:

• For K-12 students: broadening the definition of computing by using diverse mentors, including high school students and disabled undergraduate students; weekend computing workshops with the Girl Scouts; after-school computing workshops with Cool Girls, Boys and Girls Club and YWCA; summer camps for fourth through 12th grade students at Georgia Tech and eight other colleges and universities; and computing workshops for high school teachers to engage K-12 students.
• For undergraduate students: computing workshops hosted by the University System of Georgia for faculty to teach high-retention curricula and then evaluate impact; research to determine why students do not take computer science classes; recruitment of undergraduates to serve as leaders and mentors for high school students.
• For graduate students: recruitment of graduate students to serve as leaders, mentors, material developers and evaluators for tracking computer science graduate enrollment in Georgia.

This next phase of the program focuses on growth and measurement. Georgia Computes! aims to increase teacher education efforts by adding two regional centers of expertise at Columbus State and Armstrong Atlantic State University and by developing online materials to offer in-service workshops regardless of geography. Innovative online computing courses will provide access via the internet to Georgia’s new computer science teaching endorsement. Perhaps the most significant addition to the program, Georgia Tech will create an infrastructure to measure individual university computing programs in the state and track individuals from workshops and camps through high school classes to university degrees.

Georgia Tech will share results of the project to serve as a model for the nation in increasing interest in computer science. Other states are looking to Georgia, including Alabama, Florida and Illinois which created "Illinois Computes!", and have started similar efforts. The future goal of Georgia Computes! is to grow beyond the state and have regional impact across the Southeast.

The grant comes on the heels of a recent $2.5 million NSF grant for Operation Reboot, a program through Georgia Tech's College of Computing to transform unemployed IT professionals into high school computing teachers over the next three years. Additionally, Georgia Tech's Institute for Personal Robotics in Education (IPRE) was recently awarded $250,000 for a second phase of enhancing introductory computer science curriculum using personal robots to teach foundational computing skills. That is more than $4.5 million just this year to support Georgia Tech and its work to improve science education in Georgia and throughout the country.

"Because of the growing sophistication of threats we face in cyber space, organizations that both build new security solutions and those that must utilize such solutions to protect their information technology assets will need qualified IS professionals with advanced knowledge of the field to address new security challenges," said Mustaque Ahamad, Professor in the College of Computing's School of Computer Science and Director of the Georgia Tech Information Security Center. "An organization's reputation rests on its ability to safeguard its information and remain compliant with regulatory requirements. This requires a much broader, deeper understanding of the field than a certificate can supply."

Georgia Tech is an established leader in the field of information security research and education, unique in its offering of a technical or policy specialization in the degree program. Close ties to the College of Management and the School of Public Policy in the College of Liberal Arts keep the policy track relevant while the technical portion of the degree is taught by faculty from a nationally ranked top ten computing program. Approximately 30 candidates per year are expected to be admitted to the distance program. Georgia Tech currently has over 25 faculty actively engaged in information security research.

"The rigor, breadth and depth of Georgia Tech’s MS in information security degree program comprehensively prepares students for the high level of accountability that information security leaders have in today's environment," said Christopher Rouland, CEO of Endgame and former CTO of IBM Internet Security Systems. Mr. Rouland, a recognized leader in the information security field, received the MS in information security degree from Georgia Tech in 2008.

The new online degree program offers the same course rigor and academic discipline that is found in the traditional on-campus curriculum. Each student is required to complete seven core courses and three additional courses in a self-selected technical or policy specialization. Core areas of study include Information Security, Applied Cryptography, Network Security, Secure Computer Systems, and Strategies and Policies. The technical specialization examines the dimensions of providing security for information processing systems, including secure operating systems and applications, network security, cryptography, and security protocols. The policy concentration focuses on the many non-technical possibilities of information processing and security, including domestic and international policy processes, organizational routines and innovation, risk perception, industry-government relations, and the constitutional framework for governmental actions. An applied research project must also be completed.

Research recently funded by the American Recovery and Reinvestment Act of 2009 aims to develop computational tools that will utilize next-generation petascale computers to understand genomic evolution. The four-year $1 million project, supported by the National Science Foundation’s PetaApps program, was awarded to a team of universities that includes the Georgia Institute of Technology, the University of South Carolina and The Pennsylvania State University.

"Genome sequences are now available for many organisms, but making biological sense of the genomic data requires high-performance computing methods and an evolutionary perspective, whether you are trying to understand how genes of new functions arise, why genes are organized as they are in chromosomes, or why these arrangements are subject to change," said lead investigator David A. Bader, a professor in the Computational Science and Engineering Division of Georgia Tech’s College of Computing.

Even on today's fastest parallel computers, it could take centuries to analyze genome rearrangements for large, complex organisms. That is why the research team -- which also includes Jijun Tang, an associate professor in the Department of Computer Science and Engineering at the University of South Carolina; and Stephen Schaeffer, an associate professor of biology at Penn State -- is focusing on future generations of petascale machines, which will be able to process more than a thousand trillion, or 1015, calculations per second. Today, most personal computers can only process a few hundred thousand calculations per second.

The researchers plan to develop new algorithms in an open-source software framework that will utilize the capabilities of parallel, petascale computing platforms to infer ancestral rearrangement events. The starting point for developing these new algorithms will be GRAPPA, an open-source code co-developed by Bader and initially released in 2000 that reconstructed the evolutionary relatedness among species.

"GRAPPA is currently the most accurate method for determining genome rearrangement, but it has only been applied to small genomes with simple events because of the limitation of the algorithms and the lack of computational power," explained Bader, who is also executive director of high-performance computing at Georgia Tech.

On a dataset of a dozen bellflower genomes, the latest version of GRAPPA determined the flowers' evolutionary relatedness one billion times faster than the original implementation that did not utilize parallel processing or optimization.

The researchers will test the performance of their new algorithms by analyzing a collection of fruit fly genomes.

"Fruit flies -- formally known as Drosophila -- are an excellent model system for studying genome rearrangement because the genome sizes are relatively small for animals, the mechanism that alters gene order is reasonably well understood, and the evolutionary relationships among the 12 sequenced genomes are known," said Schaeffer.

The analysis of genome rearrangements in Drosophila will provide a relatively simple system to understand the mechanisms that underlie gene order diversity, which can later be extended to more complex mammalian genomes, such as primates.
   
The researchers believe these new algorithms will make genome rearrangement analysis more reliable and efficient, while potentially revealing new evolutionary patterns. In addition, the algorithms will enable a better understanding of the mechanisms and rate of gene rearrangements in genomes, and the importance of the rearrangements in shaping the organization of genes within the genome.

"Ultimately this information can be used to identify microorganisms, develop better vaccines, and help researchers better understand the dynamics of microbial communities and biochemical pathways," added Bader.

NSF's Track 2 program is an activity designed to fund the deployment and operation of several leading-edge computing systems operating at or near the petascale.  An underlying goal is to advance U.S. computing capability in order to support computational scientists and engineers in the pursuit of scientific discovery. The award announced today is the part of the fourth round of awards in the Track 2 program.

"Our goal is to develop and deploy a novel, next-generation system for the computational science community that demonstrates unprecedented performance on computational science and data-intensive applications, while also addressing the new challenges of energy-efficiency," said Jeffrey Vetter, joint professor of computational science and engineering at Georgia Tech and Oak Ridge National Laboratory.

"The user community is very excited about this strategy," Vetter continued. For example, James Phillips, senior research programmer at the University of Illinois who leads development of the widely-used NAMD application, says "Our experiences with graphics processors over the past two years have been very positive and we can't wait to explore the new Fermi architecture; this new NSF resource will provide an ideal platform for our large biomolecular simulations."

Georgia Tech's Vetter will lead the five-year project as principal investigator. The project team is comprised of luminaries in the HPC field, including a Gordon Bell Prize winner and previous recipients of the NSF Track 2B award. Co-principal investigators on the project are Prof. Jack Dongarra (University of Tennessee and ORNL), Prof. Karsten Schwan (Georgia Tech), Prof. Richard Fujimoto (Georgia Tech), and Prof. Thomas Schulthess (Swiss National Supercomputing Centre and ORNL).

The platforms will be developed and deployed in two phases, with initial system delivery planned for deployment in early 2010. This system’s innovations in performance and power will be achieved through heterogeneous processing based on widely-available NVIDIA graphics processing units (GPUs). As industry partners, HP and NVIDIA will be providing the computational systems, platforms and processors needed to develop the system.

"Research institutions are looking for energy-efficient, high-performance computing architectures that can speed time to solution," said Ed Turkel, manager of business development in the Scalable Computing and Infrastructure business unit at HP. "The combination of HP's industry-standard HPC server technology with NVIDIA processors delivers increased performance and faster application development, accelerating higher education research projects."

The initial system will pair hundreds of HP high-performance Intel processors with NVIDIA's new next-generation CUDA architecture, codenamed Fermi, designed specifically for high-performance computing. This project will be the first of the Track 2 awards to realize the vast potential of GPUs for HPC.

"Computational science is a key area driving the worldwide application of GPUs for high-performance computing," said Bill Dally, chief scientist at NVIDIA. "GPUs working in concert with CPUs is the architecture of choice for future demanding applications."

A critical component of the program is a focus on education, outreach and training to expand the knowledge and understanding of HPC among a broader audience. The Georgia Tech team will conduct workshops to attract and train new users for the system, engage historically underrepresented groups such as women and minorities, and educate future generations on the vast potential of high-performance computing as a career field.

ATLANTA (November 18, 2009) - The biggest challenge in computing today, some experts say, is not processing power, but power consumption. In 2007, the Environmental Protection Agency forecasted that as of 2011, data centers will be responsible for 2 percent of all power consumption in the U.S., and some predictions foresee those levels rising to almost 6 percent by 2020. Finally, there are numerous anecdotes about power demands caused by data centers, including partial brownouts when supercomputers are switched on and new data centers having to be moved to where cheap hydro-power is available, such as the Columbia River Gorge.

Clearly, power consumption is not only an environmental concern, but also a productivity and security issue. If high-performance computing (HPC) centers are going to be able to run larger simulations and process more and more data, they must find a way to decrease their facilities' drain on the power grid.

To help understand and reduce power consumption, the Georgia Institute of Technology has launched Green IT. The effort considers power consumption across the entire "energy stack," ranging from the power consumed by modern multi-core platforms, to the board and rack levels, to the entire data center. Corralling expertise from Georgia Tech's College of Computing, College of Engineering and Office of Information Technology, the consortium is a multidisciplinary effort that looks at how to build large-scale systems that use less power. The goal is to better understand where and how power is used, and to make it possible to coordinate power usage across different data center components, such as the cooling and the IT infrastructure.

"With experts from computer science looking at systems management, cloud computing and virtualization, and electrical engineers investigating chip design along with mechanical engineers working on cooling technologies, Georgia Tech is in a great position to help solve the power consumption problem," said Karsten Schwan, a professor in Georgia Tech's College of Computing.

Often, research efforts like these must use simulated machines, with heaters substituting for computers; but the Green IT group will be using a large-scale commodity system, a 1,000-node IBM BladeCenter, to conduct its investigations. The system was previously used by the Center for the Study of Systems Biology.

"Rather than junking the old machine, Georgia Tech decided that we could recycle it and use it for energy-efficient IT research along with a host of other uses," said Schwan.

The GreenIT effort is led by Sudhakar Yalamanchili in Electrical and Computer Engineering and includes the following faculty members: Ada Gavrilovska, Ron Hutchins, Yogendra Joshi,  Hyesoon Kim,  Hsien-Hsin Lee,  Saibal Mukhopadhyay,  Santosh Pande, Calton Pu, Karsten Schwan,  Madhavan Swaminathan, Yorai Wardi, Marilyn Wolf and Jun Xu.

This week, Georgia Tech is showcasing research activities in high-performance computing and the computational sciences, at SC09. The conference takes place at the Oregon Convention Center in Portland, Oregon, Nov. 14-20. Arkin, a Regents' Professor in Interactive Computing whose research focus is in robotics, will serve as a
governor from 2010-12 for IEEE SSIT. The organization's 2,000 members worldwide address such issues as environmental, health and safety
implications of technology; engineering ethics and professional
responsibility; history of electrotechnology; technical expertise and
public policy; peace technology; and social issues related to energy,
information technology and telecommunications.

Conte, a professor who heads up the School of Computer Science's architecture group, also will serve a
2010-12 term as governor for the IEEE Computer Society, whose 85,000 members
work in a wide range of computing fields, from artificial intelligence
to networking, to software engineering and graphics processing.

Brubaker was advised by Distinguished Professor Santosh Vempala (CS), and his thesis committee includes professors Haesun Park (CSE), Vladimir Koltchinskii (Math), Adam Kalai, senior researcher at Microsoft Research New England, and Ravi Kannan, principal researcher for Microsoft Research India.

“My journey through the Ph.D. program has been a long one, taking me from robotics, to computer vision, to machine learning, and finally to theory,” Brubaker said. “Making so many transitions slowed my graduation, no doubt, but it also allowed me to work with leaders across several research fields and has given me a better perspective on the research world. Ultimately, I am the better for it, and I am grateful to everyone I have had the opportunity to work with.”

Principal Component Analysis (PCA) is one of the most widely used data-analysis techniques in science and engineering. In a letter explaining the significance of Brubaker’s research, Vempala said the thesis (available here) made three distinct contributions to the field: it gives a new notion of principal components called “Isotropic PCA” that is scale-invariant; it suggests a new method called “Robust PCA” for dealing with outliers and noisy data; and it extends the notion of principal components from matrices to tensors (multi-dimensional arrays). PCA is notorious for its vulnerability to noise and for its lack of scale-invariance. The thesis addresses these outstanding issues and will make PCA more practical and reliable.

“Besides the sheer technical strength of his results, Charlie has put in a great deal of effort into clear exposition, and has included multiple chapters with introductory and background material,” Vempala wrote. “His thesis is consistently insightful and a pleasure to read. It is hard for me to recall a more impressive thesis in algorithms in recent years.”

“What strikes me as most impressive about Charlie’s work is that it so beautifully has a foot in absolutely first-rate theory, as well as practical, broad and important application areas,” CS Chair and Professor Ellen Zegura wrote in her letter supporting Brubaker’s nomination for the ACM award. “In the next several years, I think we will see numerous uses of and citations to Charlie’s work in many domains.”

Brubaker and his wife, Stephanie, have two children, Charles and Sophie.

The honor of Distinguished Member goes to ACM members with “at least 15 years of professional experience and five years of continuous professional membership who have achieved significant accomplishments or have made a significant impact on the computing field,” according to the association’s website. In awarding the honor, ACM further designates recipients as Distinguished Engineers, Distinguished Educators or Distinguished Scientists. Both Edwards and Grinter received the latter designation. In 2009, 84 ACM members were so honored, with 58 being named Distinguished Scientists, 17 named Distinguished Engineers and nine named Distinguished Educators.

Edwards is associate director of GVU Center and director of the Platforms and Infrastructures for Experimental Interactions (PIXI) lab. His research interests include ubiquitous computing, technologies to enable rich user experiences, evolvable and adaptable systems, multimodal interfaces, and human-centered approaches to networking. Edwards says he “is a technologist at heart, but enjoys working with designers, as well as ethnographers and other social scientists.”

Grinter is director of the Work2Play lab. Her research focuses on the relationship between human action and interaction and technologies. She uses empirical methods, primarily qualitative, to explore how to support people interactions with systems and each other through systems. Her research lies at the intersection of several different research communities including computer-supported cooperative work, human-computer interaction, sociology, software engineering and ubiquitous computing.

ACM also announced a new class of Senior Members for 2009, which included the following College of Computing faculty: Frank Dellaert, Mark Guzdial and Beth Mynatt from the School of Interactive Computing, and Gabriel Loh, Milos Prvulovic and Jun Xu from the School of Computer Science. Senior ACM members are those with "at least 10 years of professional experience and five years of continuous professional membership who have demonstrated performance that sets them apart from their peers."

"Traditional cell phones have been ignored by attackers because they were specialty devices, but the new phones available today are handheld computers that are able to send and receive e-mail, surf the Internet, store documents and remotely access data -- all actions that make them vulnerable to a wide range of attacks," said Patrick Traynor, assistant professor in the School of Computer Science at the Georgia Institute of Technology.

Traynor and Jonathon Giffin, also an assistant professor in the School of Computer Science, recently received a three-year $450,000 grant from the National Science Foundation to develop tools that improve the security of mobile devices and the telecommunications networks on which they operate. These Georgia Tech faculty, together with a team of graduate students, are developing methods of identifying and remotely repairing mobile devices that may be infected with viruses or other malware.

Malware can potentially eavesdrop on user input or otherwise steal sensitive information, destroy stored information, or disable a device. Attackers may snoop on passwords for online accounts, electronic documents, e-mails that discuss sensitive topics, calendar and phonebook entries, and audio and video media.

"Since mobile phones typically lack security features found on desktop computers, such as antivirus software, we need to accept that the mobile devices will ultimately be successfully attacked. Therefore our research focus is to develop effective attack recovery strategies," explained Giffin.

The researchers plan to investigate whether cellular service providers -- such as AT&T and Verizon Wireless -- are capable of detecting infected devices on their respective networks. Since infected devices often begin to over-utilize the network by sending a high volume of traffic to a known malicious Internet server or by suddenly generating a high volume of text messages, monitoring traffic patterns on the network should allow these infected phones to be located, according to the researchers.

"While a single user might realize that a phone is behaving differently, that person probably won't know why. But a cell phone provider may see a thousand devices behaving in the same way and have the ability to do something about it," said Traynor.

Once infected devices are located, those phones will need to be cleared of the malicious code. To accomplish this, the researchers are developing remote repair methods, which will allow service providers to assist in the cleaning of infected devices without requiring that the phones be brought to a service center. The methods will also have to work without much effort on the part of the customer.

This repair may require disabling some functionality on the phone, such as the ability to use downloaded programs, until the malicious program is located and removed. While the repair is underway, phone calling and text messaging functionality would continue to operate.

"Using this remote repair strategy, the service provider no longer has to completely disable a phone. Instead they just put the device into a safe, but reduced, mode until the malware can be removed," said Giffin.

To assess their proposed methods of finding and repairing infected mobile devices, the researchers plan to build a cellular network test bed at Georgia Tech that will simulate how cellular devices communicate over a network.

"We hope that developing these attack recovery strategies will let potential mobile phone and network attackers know that these response mechanisms are in place, ultimately making their attacks far less widespread or successful," said Traynor.
