{"390921":{"#nid":"390921","#data":{"type":"news","title":"Welcoming Georgia Tech\u2019s Class of 2019","body":[{"value":"\u003Cp\u003EA crowd of special guests gathered on campus this week for to meet with President G.P. \u201cBud\u201d Peterson and other Georgia Tech leaders.\u003C\/p\u003E\u003Cp\u003ETech organized a reception to welcome all the Atlanta Public Schools (APS) students admitted to be part of Georgia Tech\u2019s incoming freshman class.\u003C\/p\u003E\u003Cp\u003EStudents, their families, high school principals and APS Superintendent Meria Carstarphen mingled with campus administrators. Students and their parents received answers to questions about financial aid, academic programs and student life.\u003C\/p\u003E\u003Cp\u003EThe reception is just one example of the work going on to increase exposure and access to Georgia Tech for Atlanta Public Schools\u2019 most prepared students.\u003C\/p\u003E\u003Cp\u003EEarlier this year Tech launched the APS Scholars program, which grants automatic admittance to all Atlanta Public Schools valedictorians and salutatorians who apply and an award to cover the cost of in-state tuition and mandatory fees for eight semesters.\u003C\/p\u003E\u003Cp\u003E\u201cWhat we are trying to do is be much more aggressive and reach out to Atlanta Public Schools in a number of ways,\u201d Peterson told the crowd at the reception.\u0026nbsp;\u003C\/p\u003E\u003Cp\u003EPeterson joked that some students may think they don\u2019t want to attend Georgia Tech because it\u2019s too close to home. He reminded them that about 8,000 students live on campus.\u003C\/p\u003E\u003Cp\u003E\u201cDon\u2019t worry \u2013 we are a long way from home,\u201d he said as the students laughed.\u003C\/p\u003E\u003Cp\u003E\u201cWe are very, very excited to have you,\u201d Peterson said. \u201cWe look forward to seeing you in the fall. Go Jackets!\u201d\u003C\/p\u003E\u003Cp\u003EGeorgia Tech received 130 applications from Atlanta Public Schools students this year \u2013 a 77 percent increase from last year, said Rick Clark, director of Undergraduate Admission. Tech received applications from all public high schools in the system, he said.\u003C\/p\u003E\u003Cp\u003EThe Institute admitted 45 students, and during the reception students were encouraged to join Tech\u2019s Class of 2019.\u003C\/p\u003E\u003Cp\u003ETapping into the NCAA March Madness, Clark compared Georgia Tech to a point guard.\u003C\/p\u003E\u003Cp\u003E\u201cThe beauty of and the power of a good point guard is that they see the floor and that they call the plays,\u201d he said. \u201cThey have the vision of what needs to happen and they make everyone else around them better.
