Nieto has worked as an architect since graduating from the Universidad Politécnica de Madrid and the Graduate School of Architecture and Planning at Columbia University in New York in 1983. She is a founding partner of Nieto Sobejano Arquitectos and a professor at the Universidad Europea de Madrid. Fuensanta Nieto lectures on architecture and participates in juries and symposia at various institutions around the world. From 1986 to 1991 she was co-director of the architectural journal ARQUITECTURA, published by the Colegio Oficial de Arquitectos de Madrid. 

Nieto Sobejano Arquitectos was founded in 1985 by Fuensanta Nieto and Enrique Sobejano and has offices in Madrid and Berlin. Along with being widely published in international magazines and books, the firm’s work has been exhibited at the Biennale di Venezia in 2000, 2002, 2006, and 2012, at the Museum of Modern Art (MoMA), New York, in 2006, at the Kunsthaus in Graz in 2008 and at the MAST Foundation in Bologna in 2014. They are the recipients of the 2007 National Prize for Conservation and Restoration of Cultural Heritage and the 2010 Nike Prize issued by the Bund Deutscher Architekten (BDA), as well as the Aga Khan Award for Architecture (2010), the Piranesi Prix de Rome (2011), the European Museum of the Year Award (2012), the Hannes Meyer Prize (2012), AIA Honorary Fellowship (2015), the Alvar Aalto Medal (2015) and Gold Medal of Merit in the Fine Arts in 2017. Their major works include the Madinat al-Zahra Museum, the Moritzburg Museum, the San Telmo Museum, the Zaragoza Congress Centre, the Joanneum extension in Graz, and the Contemporary Art Centre in Córdoba. Nieto Sobejano Arquitectos currently have projects in Germany, Spain, Austria, Estonia, Morocco, China, United Kingdom and France. Three monographs have been recently published on their work: "Nieto Sobejano. Memory and Invention" (Hatje Cantz Verlag, Ostfildern, Germany, 2013), "Fuensanta Nieto, Enrique Sobejano. Architetture" (Mondadori Electa Spa, Milano, Italy, 2014) and "Nieto Sobejano Arquitectura 2004-2017" (TC Cuadernos 131/132, Valencia, Spain, 2017). 

Nieto Sobejano: Design Philosophy 

Nieto Sobejano's works are conceived independently, at different times. They are the result of varying conditions, places, and programs: at first glance one is undoubtedly more attentive to what sets them apart than to what may unite them. Only when grouped together, like pieces of an imaginary puzzle, do they seem to reveal what unconsciously connects them: fragmentary processes that suggest perhaps fictitious, but not unreal, orders. And yet, precisely because architecture is always the result of an interpretation of multiple and apparently unconnected circumstances that end up resembling one another, the projects are a reflection of one another, like an unforeseen result of an endless play of mirrors.

About Dan Wood

Dan Wood FAIA co-founded WORKac with Amale Andraos in 2003. He has taught extensively, most recently at MIT. He previously taught at Columbia University and the University of Pennsylvania and held the 2017 Frank Gehry International Visiting Chair in Architectural Design at the University of Toronto and the 2013-14 Louis I. Kahn Chair at the Yale School of Architecture.

Wood is a Fellow of the American Institute of Architects and the Vice President for Design Excellence of the New York Chapter of the AIA. His publications, co-authored with Amale Andraos, include ‘WORKac: We’ll Get There When We Cross That Bridge,’ 49 Cities’ and ‘Above the Pavement the Farm!’

About Pascale Sablan

With over twelve years of experience, Sablan has been on the design team at S9ARCHITECTURE for a variety of mixed-use, commercial, cultural & residential projects in the U.S., Saudi Arabia, India, Azerbaijan, Japan, & UAE. Their most notable project is the Bronx Point Project, with 540 residential units, community facility, 10 theatre cinema and the first brick and mortar Universal Hip Hop Museum. Sablan is the 315th living African American female architect in the United States to attain her architectural license.

To engage the culture, Sablan has given lectures at Institutions such as the National Museum of African American Heritage & Culture and the United Nations Visitor Centre. She engages students through her lectures at Universities and Colleges all over the US; Columbia University, Georgia Technical College, Tuskegee University, Pratt Institute, Parsons | The New School, Madison Area Technical College and California Polytechnic State University.

She is the Founder and Executive Director of Beyond the Built Environment, LLC, positioned to uniquely address the inequitable disparities in architecture by providing a holistic platform aimed to support numerous stages of the architecture pipeline. To impact the culture, Beyond the Built Environment, elevates the identities and contributions of minority architects and designers through exhibitions, curated lectures, and documentaries that testify to the provided value of their built work and its spatial impact.

Sablan curated SAY IT LOUD exhibitions at the AIA New York, in Center for Architecture gallery, SXSW Conference 2019, A'19 and NOMA 2018 Unbounded conference which were all paired with relevant programming speaking to the mission. The SAY IT LOUD - United Nations Visitors Centre, exhibition created tremendous opportunity of exposure and echoing the call to action to the leaders of our world. After her speech at the opening of our exhibition, the United Nations generously offered to transform this exhibition into posters, translate into 8 languages (English, French, Spanish, Portuguese, Chinese, Russian, Arabic and Kiswahili), and distributed to their information centers worldwide. SAY IT LOUD - United Nations exhibit has been displayed in Bujumbura, Geneva, Harare, Lagos, Lome, Nairobi, New Delhi, Minsk and Yaounde.

She has been recognized for her contributions to the industry with several awards, including the 2018 Pratt Alumni Achievement Award, Emerging New York Architect Merit Award and the NOMA Prize for Excellence in Design. Sablan was selected as one of 2018 American Institute of Architects (AIA) Young Architects Award Recipient and was featured in the Council of Tall Building & Urban Habitat Research Paper, in the same company as Jeanne Gang and Zaha Hadid. She was named Building Design + Construction 40 Under 40 and was featured on the Cover of the September 2017 issue of their magazine.

About "I Was Asked to Stand"

This lecture educates and empowers the participants to understand the cause and possible solutions to the disparity in the lack of representation, documentation, and acknowledgement of the great works of women and minority architects. This lecture is divided into 5 sections focusing on the history of the problems, how we can proactively change our profession and future aspiration to continue the fight for equality. We address the lack of knowledge amongst the general population of the existence of women and diverse designers and the forces of erasure. We highlight the flaws within the education system, enrollment, graduation rates, and teaching of diverse architects. Thirdly, we explore why it has been stagnant at 5% African-American Architects in the profession for nearly a decade. Fourth, showing examples of how architecture can serve as advocates. Lastly architect as advocates, people who to collaborate to make a difference.

In 2013 he was in charge of organizing the roundtables "Where do we stand?" at MoMA; in 2014, he coordinated the "Made in Europe" project for the European Commission at the Venice Biennale; and in 2015 and 2016 he was the curator of the exhibition "Made in Europe" at the Shanghai Art and Space Art Season and at the European Capital of Culture in Wroclaw.

Since 2005 he has been a professor at the Barcelona Architecture Center (BAC) and has extensive experience in publications on architecture, photography and criticism. At the Mies van der Rohe Foundation he is in charge of the Euroepan Union Prize for Contemporary Architecture – Mies van der Rohe Award and of the program of interventions by artists in architects that has worked with SANAA, Ai Weiwei, Andrés Jaque, Anna & Eugeni Bach, Spencer Finch and Luftwerk among many others.

The EU Mies van der Rohe Award was launched in 1988 and for over 30 years has created a network that has scanned and interpreted the construction of the European territory. This space is composed of an emulsion of natural and cultural, vernacular and canonical, traditional and artificial elements.

Contemporary architecture must assume this ambiguity, project it towards the future and offset the natural wear to which forms are subject by means of a symmetrical process of innovation. The nearly 4.000 works of the archive, created since the inception of the EU Mies Award, contribute a new inflection or added value to the European territory and the results of the 2019 cycle highlight this attitude.

The lecture will present the organization of this network of people, institutions and companies and the works chosen by a prestigious jury formed by architects, curators, journalists and clients and it will be complemented with the exhibition in the Stubbins Gallery.

Her work has been published and exhibited widely including the Venice Biennial, the Istanbul Design Biennial, the Shenzhen Biennial, the Onassis Cultural Center, the Royal Academy of British Architects and the Storefront for Art and Architecture.  She is the author of the awarded book The Architecture of Closed Worlds, Or, What is the Power of Shit (Lars Muller Publishers, 2018), the History of Ecological Design for Oxford English Encyclopedia of Environmental Science and the editor of EcoRedux, a special issue of Architectural Design magazine (AD, 2010). Kallipoliti holds a Diploma in Architecture and Engineering from the Aristotle University of Thessaloniki, Greece, a Master of Science [SMArchS] in design and building technology from MIT and a PhD in history and theory of architecture from Princeton University. She is the principal of ANAcycle thinktank, which has been named leading innovator in sustainable design in Build’s 2019 awards.

The tentative term “history machine” is a medium of immersive scholarship lingering between reality and fiction, with which I examine, redesign, and reimagine archives. I see archives, not as static objects that contain historical documents, but as immersive spaces and living collections where existential ideas about world orders migrate though different architectural and spatial typologies.  Contrary to a linear text, a reconfigured archive allows multiplicity, simultaneity and disruption. It allows the reader to travel between different times, places and objects of investigation, enabling multiple connections and complex affinities between themes, concepts and ideas that are not limited to a single place, era, author or type. A reconfigured archive can produce new interconnected categories out of archival boxes, a universe of multitudes that does not necessarily need to be transcribed in linear time. I see the use of history as a creative and generative medium for contemporary concerns in design education and practice; one that does not only promote public engagement with historical material, but also makes evident that in the history of ideas, discourses get recycled. Concepts emerge as allegedly new, though ideas undergo long journeys of migration from one epistemological field to another.

Her lecture, titled, "What Could Go Wrong?" asks, "What’s architecture?" Who we are and what we do gets reinvented in response to economic or legal change. In the 1960s and 1970s, architects were America’s idealists. In the 1990s we became architects. What got left behind the last time, and where can our profession take leadership as society again undergoes dramatic change?

With an office dedicated to academia, NADAAA –and its principal, Nader Tehrani-- have been dedicated to building bridges between practice and its aligned disciplines for over 20 years. Having taught at Northeastern University, RISD, Harvard, Georgia Tech, MIT, and now at The Cooper Union, Tehrani has had a chance to witness and participate in varied pedagogical cultures and intellectual streams. With the NADAAA team, Tehrani has completed three schools of architecture for Georgia Tech, The University of Melbourne and the University of Toronto. While this is somewhat of a coincidence, it has led to an in depth analysis of the current state of design schools, some of their radical curricular and structural differences, the manner in which technology has changed the spaces of each school and more broadly how spaces of education are evolving in different ways according to varied cultural and intellectual platforms. One of the significant changes that has taken place in recent years concerns the redefinition of the studio space, most commonly held to be the heart of the school of architecture. For this reason, the program of the School of Architecture is being completely re-thought, with spaces of research, fabrication and collaboration taking on a higher urgency than before.

Each new or renovated building changes its community. These interventions have consequences in the lives of hundreds, maybe thousands of people who encounter them. Architects face the challenges of program, budget and schedule in every project, but the most important challenge is to find the public value of each project, no matter the type, outside of its lot lines. Architecture can promote cultural growth by becoming alive in our experience, placing us between comfort and challenge, the known and the curious. Architecture is not simply a thing, but a transaction between us and our environment. In this way, architecture behaves as instrument. It can expand our senses, capacity and understanding of who we are and who we want to be.

The work of Duvall Decker Architects explores hopeful proposition in the work of an expanded practice that includes architectural design, community planning, real estate development, and building care. We see this group of endeavors as an integration of creative work to make and maintain meaningful public environments.

Anne Marie Duvall Decker, FAIA, is a founding principal of Duvall Decker Architects, located in Jackson, Mississippi. Duvall Decker is an expanded design practice whose work includes architectural design, community planning, real estate development and facility maintenance. Duvall Decker is recognized for its design and planning excellence and its innovative approach to inner city development.

The firm’s work and approach has been highlighted in publications such as the The New York Times, dwell, ARCHITECT Magazine, and the Journal of Architectural Education. In 2017, the Architectural League of New York selected Duvall Decker as one of its Emerging Voices.

Anne Marie is a contributor to the advancement of the profession, serving AIA Mississippi as long-term board member and President and developing its Mississippi Celebrates Architecture program, and she is currently a trustee of the AIA Trust. Anne Marie is often invited to share the firm’s work and her experience as a lecturer, critic, teacher and design juror, most recently serving on the jury for the 2018 AIA Institute Honor Awards for Architecture.

Her articles have been published by the Journal of Architectural Education, Princeton Architectural Press, Royal Danish Academy of Fine Arts, and ACADIA. Her book Plastics Now: On Architecture's Relationship to a Continuously Emerging Material was published by Routledge in Spring 2015. She lectures internationally to academic and industry audiences, including the Australian Institute of Architects, University of Nottingham, University of Washington, Harvard University, and the University of Texas at Austin.

Jordi Pimàs is the founding partner at Studio 1984 and Grichka Martinetti is the founding partner at Atelierpng Architecture. Together with AJAP14 and Frédéric Bonnet, Pimàs and Martinetti curated the French Pavilion of Venice. Both Pimàs and Martinetti were named laureates of the Nouveaux Albums des Jeunes Architectes et Paysagistes in 2014. Pimàs teaches Architecture Design in Accademia di Architettura di Mendrisio – USI, and Martinetti teaches at Ecole Nationale Supérieure d’Architecture de Paris-Val-de-Seine.

The crisis of climate change is not simply an environmental project; it is also a socio-cultural project that requires all of the resources of cross-disciplinary design thinking. Phu Hoang and Rachely Rotem, co-directors of MODU, argue that the undeniable truth of climate change can learn from weather itself—requiring design strategies that are varied, differentiated, mediated, and adaptive. Social collectivity in thermally active spaces is at the core of MODU’s work.

The Music Studies Centre and the SGAE Central Office in Santiago de Compostela, completed in 2004 and set in a masterplan by Arata Isosaki, sets out three walls which confront one another: a monolithic stone wall of irregular ashlars of variable geometry and size which allow light to break into the building; a translucent glass wall facing the street; and an interior wall made up of CDs.

García-Abril describes his project, the Truffle, as ‘a piece of nature built with earth, full of air. A space within a stone that sits on the ground and blends with the territory.’ The project involved digging a hole and using the soil to form a dyke around it. This they filled with hay bales and poured concrete over it, topping it with the soil. Once hardened, the resulting shape was exhumed and sliced open, exposing the hay, which a cow spent a year eating, leaving the hardened shell to make a  comfortable if quirky holiday home.

His latest project, the Cervantes Theatre in Mexico City completed in 2001, is buried underground, marked only by a large metallic structure above ground. The excavated spaces are expressed as a sequence of theatre lobbies at different levels open to the sky and protected by the symbolic metal structure.

In 2009, García-Abril founded the Positive City Foundation to research ‘the urban phenomenon’. He has taught at MIT, Harvard, Cornell and Chicago; as well as Stuttgart, Düsseldorf, Weimar, Madrid and the AA.

Laurie Hawkinson received her Masters in Fine Arts from the University of California at Berkeley, attended the Whitney Museum of American Art Independent Study program in New York and received her professional degree in architecture from the Cooper Union. Significant completed projects include the Corning Museum of Glass, the Wall Street Ferry Terminal and “Strategic Open Space” Public Realm Improvement Strategy for Lower Manhattan, the new Land Port of Entry at Massena, New York. She recently lead the design of a new Emergency Medical Services Station for the City of New York. Collaborative projects include the North Carolina Museum of Art Amphitheater and Site Master Plan, the Museum of Women’s History and the NYC2012 Olympic Village for Hunters Point, New York.

SMH+ PROFILE:  Smith-Miller + Hawkinson Architects LLP is a New York City-based architecture and design studio established in 1983. The firm has received numerous awards including the American Academy of Arts and Letters Arnold W. Brunner Memorial Prize in Architecture, the NYC AIA Chapter Medal of Honor, and a Special Recognition for Excellence in Design from the New York City Art Commission. 

PORTMAN VISITING CRITIC:  The purpose of the Portman Prize and the Portman Visiting Critic Program is to foster design excellence and student creativity in the School of Architecture at Georgia Tech. Recognizing student accomplishment and excellence in the integration of technical considerations as a key constituent of the design process the Portman Prize is awarded through competition by a distinguished jury chaired by the Portman Visiting Critic who also participates over the semester as a roving design studio critic and public lecturer. The competition jury awards ranked prizes, each carrying monetary awards. The top prize winner is also offered a summer internship in the office of John Portman & Associates. 

Rawlins graduated from the College of Architecture in 1995.  Following Georgia Tech, he was awarded a full merit scholarship to Princeton University.  Christopher worked with Alexander Gorlin and taught at Lehigh University prior to incorporating his own practice in 2003.  In 2013 he founded Pines Modern, a non-profit modern architecture preservation group.

Topology is a term in landscape architecture which equates with the term tectonics in architecture.  Broadly defined, it is about an intelligent and structured response to terrain. Topology encompasses the entire range of scales from the specific to the local and from the local to the regional, both in scope and in meaning. It is precisely the underlying logic of any physical design, to want to restitute a certain sense of continuity on the ground we tread upon. Topology delivers clear and simple solutions to very complex problems, by making the obvious physical choices pertaining to a site knowingly. One could say that it heralds a return to an elegant vision of the world, where landscape architecture can rise to the expectations of future city dwellers and their lot.  This presentation will endeavor to show a set of concrete landscape projects and examples at a large scale where topology contributes actively to the recovery the spirit of place.

Christophe Girot is Professor and Chair of Landscape Architecture at the Department of Architecture of the Swiss Federal Institute of Technology in Zurich.  His research address new topological methods in landscape design, new media in landscape analysis and perception, and the recent history and theory of landscape design.  Emphasis is placed on the fields of action in contemporary large-scale urban landscape with a particular attention given to sustainable design.  Girot practices landscape architecture in Zurich and has built projects in Berlin and Paris.  His work has been published and exhibited in several countries including “Groundswell,” the first exhibition on Landscape Architecture at the MoMA in New York.

Rawlins graduated from the College of Architecture in 1995.  Following Georgia Tech, he was awarded a full merit scholarship to Princeton University.  Christopher worked with Alexander Gorlin and taught at Lehigh University prior to incorporating his own practice in 2003.  In 2013 he founded Pines Modern, a non-profit modern architecture preservation group.

Dorte Mandrup has 20 years of professional experience in summarizing and solving complex problems in architectural form or shape.  She has been awarded numerous national and international awards including the Bauwelt Prize, AR Award for Emerging Architecture – and the prestigious C.F. Hansen medal.

Joshua Prince-Ramus is Principal of REX, an internationally acclaimed architecture and design firm based in New York City. Joshua was founding partner of OMA New York--the American affiliate of the Office for Metropolitan Architecture/Rem Koolhaas--and served as its Principal until he repositioned the firm as REX in 2006. While REX was still known as OMA New York, Joshua was Partner in Charge of the Guggenheim-Hermitage Museum in Las Vegas and the Seattle Central Library, hailed as Time magazine's 2004 Building of the Year and by Herbert Muschamp in the New York Times as the "most exciting new building it has been my honor to review in more that 30 years of writing about architecture."

Julie Snow

A graduate of the University of Colorado, Julie Snow, FAIA, lived and worked abroad for several years before establishing a practice in Minneapolis, Minnesota.  Snow founded Julie Snow Architects in 1995 and now leads, along with Matt Kreilich, AIA, the studio-based practice, Snow Kreilich Architects. The studio’s diverse scale and type of work is joined by a common exploration of material and detail. Its interest in pragmatic and critical programmatic reflection results in innovative designs that expand the understanding of architectural performance. Design strategies engage issues of how architecture performs within each project's social, cultural, and economic context. Her portfolio includes many highly crafted, graceful, elegant, and responsive residences, commercial buildings, and institutional facilities.  The studio’s work has appeared in many professional journals, in several surveys of architecture, and at the Chicago Architectural Foundation.  In 2005, Princeton Architectural Press published the first monograph on the studio’s work in its series on emerging designers from around the world.

Snow has earned numerous awards, including national and international honors such as the AIA Honor Award, Holcim North American Award, Progressive Architecture Design Award, the Chicago Athenaeum’s American and International Architecture Awards, Architect Magazine Annual Design Review, the Design Distinction Award from I.D. magazine, Business Week/Architectural Record Awards, US General Services Administration's Design Excellence Awards and the 2014 AIA Minnesota Gold Award.  Additionally, Snow has held several visiting professor positions including the Graduate School of Design at Harvard University, the University of Arkansas, University of Maryland, Washington University, Syracuse University, and University of Southern California. After teaching at the University of Minnesota College of Architecture and Landscape Architecture, she received the Ralph Rapson Award for Distinguished Teaching. She has lectured at the Buenos Aires Bienalle, the National Building Museum, San Francisco Museum of Modern Art, the Walker Art Center, and at many universities including Harvard, Cornell, and Yale.

The Portman Prize

In order to encourage student accomplishment and excellence in the integration of technical considerations as a key constituent of the design process, the Portman Prize will be awarded by a jury comprised of the Portman Visiting Critic as jury chair; representatives of the firm of John Portman & Associates; and other invited participants. Students will be advanced to the final jury stage through a prior juried selection process. The final jury will award ranked prizes each carrying monetary awards. The top prizewinner will also be offered a summer internship in the office of John Portman & Associates.

The Portman Prize and Visiting Critic Program has been generously supported for over a decade by the Atlanta firm of John Portman & Associates, Inc. Portman is an internationally recognized architectural and engineering firm with offices in Atlanta, Georgia and Shanghai, China. Maria Mingallon, Senior Structural Engineer specialized in advanced computation and digital fabrication at Arup, will discuss how digital technologies are bringing these practices together and the added value that stems from it. Her work uses Nature as a source of knowledge and digital computation as a tool for designing, analysing and making. She has worked at ARUP since graduating as a Structural Engineer. Among other projects, she has designed two footbridges leading to the Aquatics Centre by Zaha Hadid Architects at the London 2012 Olympic Park. In 2008 Arup sponsored her master degree in Emergent Technologies and Design at the Architectural Association from which she graduated with Distinction.

As executive director of the IPA, Karen Kubey pursues the organization¹s mission, to promote socially engaged architecture, through urban research projects and a residency program for design practitioners. Kubey is a New York-based architectural designer and educator, specializing in housing design and research. Trained as an architect at the University of California, Berkeley, and Columbia University, she began her career working in affordable housing design. Kubey co-founded both the Architecture for Humanity New York chapter and New Housing New York, the city¹s first design competition for sustainable and affordable housing. She is a recipient of the Independent Projects Grant from the New York State Council on the Arts and was the 2012 Wilder Green Fellow at The MacDowell Colony.

Marlon Blackwell is a practicing architect in Fayetteville, Arkansas, and serves as Distinguished Professor and Department Head in the Fay Jones School of Architecture at the University of Arkansas. His architecture is based in design strategies that draw upon vernaculars and the particular elements of place. His design work has received recognition with numerous national and international design awards and significant publication in books, architectural journals and magazines.

Amongst many awards and honors, most recently the office of Marlon Blackwell Architects was recognized as the Firm of the Year by Residential Architect magazine in 2011, won AIA National Honor Awards in 2012 and 2013, the 2011 Civic and Community Building category at the World Architecture Festival in Barcelona, Spain, and the 2012 Architecture Prize from the American Academy of Arts and Letters. "An Architecture of the Ozarks: The Works of Marlon Blackwell" was published by Princeton Architectural Press in 2005.

In addition to teaching at the University of Arkansas, where he has co-taught design studios with Peter Eisenman, Christopher Risher, and Julie Snow, he has held prestigious visiting appointments at Cornell, UVA, MIT and many others. He received his undergraduate degree from Auburn University in 1980 and a M. Arch II degree from Syracuse University in Florence in 1991.

Tim Frank is an architect, educator and researcher.  His practice is based in Atlanta.  He is an Assistant Professor in the Department of Architecture at SPSU and he serves as a Senior Researcher at Gygaia Projects in west central Turkey.

R. Luke DuBois is a composer, artist, and performer who explores the temporal, verbal, and visual structures of cultural and personal ephemera. He holds a doctorate in music composition from Columbia University, and has lectured and taught worldwide on interactive sound and video performance. He has collaborated on interactive performance, installation, and music production work with many artists and organizations including Toni Dove, Todd Reynolds, Jamie Jewett, Bora Yoon, Michael Joaquin Grey, Matthew Ritchie, Elliott Sharp, Michael Gordon, Maya Lin, Bang on a Can, Engine 27, Harvestworks, and LEMUR, and was the director of the Princeton Laptop Orchestra for its 2007 season.

An active visual and musical collaborator, DuBois is the co-author of Jitter, a software suite for the real-time manipulation of matrix data developed by San Francisco-based software company Cycling'74. He appears on nearly twenty-five albums both individually and as part of the avant-garde electronic group The Freight Elevator Quartet. He currently performs as part of Bioluminescence, a duo with vocalist Lesley Flanigan that explores the modality of the human voice, and in Fair Use, a trio with Zach Layton and Matthew Ostrowski, that looks at our accelerating culture through elecronic performance and remixing of cinema.

DuBois has lived for the last twenty-two years in New York City. He is the director of the Brooklyn Experimental Media Center at the NYU Tandon School of Engineering, and is on the Board of Directors of the ISSUE Project Room. She has experience in the structural design of a wide range of complex projects including sports facilities, high-rise, cultural, residential, and academic buildings. In addition, she teaches graduate architecture classes at Yale University and gives regular lectures at Pratt University.

Some of her notable projects include the World Trade Center Memorial Museum, The Tower at PNC, the Atlanta Falcons New Retractable Roof Stadium, the School of Management at Yale University, the Pinnacle Bank Arena in Lincoln, Nebraska and the Abu Dhabi Media Zone.

She was honored by the Professional Women in Construction in 2013, named a Game Changer in 2014 and a Power Player in 2015 both by Sports Business Journal magazine.

Kate Orff presents Toward An Urban Ecology. SCAPE reconceives urban landscape design as a form of activism, demonstrating how to move beyond familiar and increasingly outmoded ways of thinking about environmental, urban, and social issues as separate domains; and advocating for the synthesis of practice to create a truly urban ecology. A range of participatory and science-based strategies will be depicted through the lens of office work, featuring projects, collaborators, and design methods that advance urban ecological design.

Kate Orff is the Founder of SCAPE. Kate focuses on retooling the practice of landscape architecture relative to uncertainty of climate change and fostering social life which she has explored through publications, activism, research, and projects. She is known for leading complex, creative, and collaborative work processes that advance broad environmental and social prerogatives.

Kate Orff was named a 2012 United States Artist Fellow, an Elle Magazine “Planet Fixer,” and shared SCAPE’s design methodologies at the International TEDWomen Conference in 2010. She graduated with a bachelor’s degree in Political and Social Thought from the University of Virginia with Distinction and earned a Master in Landscape Architecture from the Graduate School of Design at Harvard University. Kate is also the Director of Columbia University GSAPP’s Urban Design Program.

Marc Tsurumaki is the Principal and Founding Partner of LTL Architects, will present a selection of the firm’s recent work in relation to their research on the role of section in architecture.  Culminating in the publication of ‘Manual of Section,’ the lecture will address the history and potentials of section as a generative technique, focusing on it’s evolution from early modernism forward, and on sectional strategies as they are deployed in LTL’s built and speculative designs.

Lewis.Tsurumaki.Lewis (LTL Architects PLLC) is an award-winning architecture partnership founded in 1997 with Paul Lewis and David J. Lewis and located in New York City. LTL Architects was the recipient of the 2007 National Design Award from the Cooper-Hewitt, National Design Museum and was selected as one of six American architectural firms featured in the U.S. Pavilion at the 2004 Venice Architecture Biennale.  Their work is in the permanent collections of the Museum of Modern Art, the San Francisco Museum of Modern Art and the Heinz Architectural Center at the Carnegie Museum of Art. The principals are co-authors of the monographs Intensities (Princeton Architectural Press, 2012) and Opportunistic Architecture (Princeton Architectural Press, 2008) along with Situation Normal....Pamphlet Architecture #21 (Princeton Architectural Press, 1998).  Their newest publication, entitled Manual of Section, was just released in August of 2016.

The notion of pure or 'specific' media, which was highly influential in defining the moment of modernism, had the effect of foregrounding the expressive possibilities of any given medium, beyond that of abstract painting to which the term medium specificity originally applied. Its continuing relevance is anything but obvious in a 'post­media' world in which digital media have developed the capacity to subsume all other technological media-and indeed promise, in some readings, to provoke the disappearance of media (and the human) as such, in favor of the autonomous proliferation of self-sufficient data streams. A concept of medium technicity can, however, be derived from the French philosopher Gilbert Simondon's analysis of the history of technology, that allows for an intensification of the capabilities of media and underlines their continued relevance in an environment in which binary code is held to reign supreme. 

Yves Abrioux is Professor Emeritus of English literature at the University of Paris. His research centers on art and literature in relation to philosophy, science and technology. His publications take in poetry and fiction, visual art, landscape and gardens. In addition to his work at Paris 8, he has taught at the Ecole du Louvre (Paris). Abrioux has exhibited work made in collaboration with the artist Gianni Burattoni, in group exhibitions in France and Great Britain and in solo exhibitions and installations in galleries and institutional venues in France and Italy. In addition to his books and articles on the artists Ian Hamilton Finlay and Bill Culbert, he has written numerous catalogue essays and reviewed multiple exhibitions for a broad range of art journals and magazines throughout Europe. In addition to his role as Professor, he served as the Director of Graduate Studies for the humanities at the University of Paris 8, where he also helped shape new research and degree programs devoted to digital media, the arts and literature. He is interested in displacements between media, both traditional and modern, and continues to speculate on the future of the museum. He worked closely with the Graduate Program in Digital Media on projects related to Louvre-Atlanta. In 2014, He co-curated Mapping Place: Africa Beyond Paper at the Robert C. Williams Museum of Paper Making. Abrioux has worked closely with faculty and students at Georgia Tech for the past 20 years.

Claire Weisz is an architect, an urbanist, and a founding principal of WXY. With her partners Mark Yoes, Layng Pew, and Adam Lubinsky, Claire focuses on innovative approaches to public space, structures, and cities. 

WXY’s architecture and planning work for cities and communities is centered around the art of re-imagining infrastructure. The studios’ award winning work has been published broadly and has been recognized for its architectural approach to the infrastructure of place. In addition to design awards from the AIA, ASLA and APA, WXY was also awarded with the Emerging Voices and Architectural League Prize from The Architectural League of New York.

Claire Weisz co-founded The Design Trust for Public Space. She is a faculty member at the New York University Wagner Graduate School of Public Service and a visiting critic of Urban Design at the Cornell University College of Architecture, Art, and Planning. She received her professional degree from the University of Toronto with honors and a Master of Architecture from Yale University.

Thom Mayne founded Morphosis in 1972 as a collective architectural practice engaged in cross-disciplinary research and design; today, the firm is based in Los Angeles, New York, and Shanghai, with projects built world-wide. Framing his lecture at Georgia Tech against this backdrop, Thom will trace the development of some of the major themes and interests that have defined Morphosis over forty years of practice, from their emergence in early Morphosis projects and explorations, to their realization in the diverse scales and project types that make up the firm’s current work. In each project, an examination of the built form reveals how the design process begins with and shaped by the specific questions we choose to acknowledge in our own investigation.

Landscape architecture continually transforms
the environment and the way we approach it.
This modern discipline, which began around
1800, quickly evolved throughout the twentiethcentury.
It is now undergoing an even more
spectacular rise as it takes a prominent place
within society and becomes established as an
important concern.
The present exhibition hints at the richness,
diversity and complexity of this fascinating field.
The first section deals with theory and history
and provides a conceptual framework for the
exhibition. The visitor is invited to discover the
influence of the history of gardens and the
important role played by the pioneers of Swiss
landscape architecture. The visitor will also see
the crucial function of national exhibitions,
including the more recent Lausanne Jardins –
the successful international festival of urban
garden design. The second section – the core
of The Swiss Touch in Landscape Architecture
– provides a survey of the most significant
landscape architecture studios. The last
section, “nouvelle vague”, presents the works of
a new generation of landscape architects. The
chosen examples intend to highlight the
centrality of a profession, which thoroughly
changes our spatial, visual and social reality.

Resiliency, Innovation & Collaboration is a personal reflection on designing and executing One World Trade Center; integrating next-generation, green building design and research, at the Center for Architecture Science and Ecology; and realizing SOM’s High Performance Design goals.
 
After graduating from Georgia Tech’s COA with a BS ARCH, Julie Hiromoto completed an MARCH at Columbia University’s GSAPP.  She is an Associate at Skidmore, Owings & Merrill and works as a Project Manager for New York and International projects, including One World Trade Center.  Prior to joining the Management group, she was a Senior Technical Architect, focusing on exterior wall and sustainable design.  Her previous experience, designing and implementing these systems, affords an understanding of the complexity involved in large scale projects.  Julie leads SOMNY’s High Performance Design initiative and the SOM Sustainable Knowledge Network.  She also teaches at New York University’s Shack Institute of Real Estate.  An active member of the NYC green building community, Julie was invited to sit on the Urban Green Council’s Programs Committee.  She is a licensed architect and LEED accredited professional.

"Since 2008, photographer Jon Pack and filmmaker Gary Hustwit have sought out the successes and failures, remnants and ghosts of the Olympics in cities including Athens, Barcelona, Mexico City, Lake Placid, Los Angeles, Montreal, and Rome. Their photographs document structures, streets, signage, and ephemera as a way of acknowledging and analyzing a complex set of relationships between the past and the present. Pack and Hustwit are creating an archive of imagery which not only illustrates the successes and failures of variations on a legendary sporting event, but their project offers a possible guide to the dos and don’ts of contemporary built environments."

About the speaker:

Léon Krier is a renowned architect, urbanist and neo-traditional theorist from Brussels. He studied Architecture at the University of Stuttgart. He is the architect of the Prince of Wales’s model town of Poundbury in Dorset, England and is considered by many to be the intellectual godfather of the New Urbanism movement in the US. Mr. Krier has been a consultant to His Royal Highness, Charles, The Prince of Wales, since 1988. 

From 1968 to 1974, Mr. Krier collaborated with architect James Stirling in London. He then became Pro­fessor of Architecture and Town Planning, at the Architectural Association and Royal College of Arts, Lon­don, and Professor of Architecture at Princeton University and University of Virginia. From 1990 to 1991, he was Davenport Professor at Yale University, returning again to Yale in 2002 as Eero Saarinen Professor. He is a founding Trustee of the New School for Traditional Architecture & Urbanism, Charleston.  

Mr. Krier has been published in Architectural Design, Architectural Review and A+U, and is the author of several books, including Architecture: Choice or Fate (1998), published in 8 languages and winner of the Silver Medal of the Académie Française. He is the recipient of the Berlin Prize for Architecture (1977), the Je.erson Memorial Gold Medal (1985), the Chicago American Institute of Architects Award (1987), and the European Culture Prize (1995). In 2003, he became the inaugural recipient of the Richard H. Driehaus Prize for Classical and Traditional Architecture. Mr. Krier has been art director and designer for Italian furniture designer Giorgetti, since 1990. He is the younger brother of noted architect Rob Krier.

Jennifer Bonner will present a series of ongoing design and research projects ranging from non-visual environments (the olfactory kind) to neighborhood renewal (the micro-entrepreneurship kind). Recently awarded a commission in Miami to design and build several “Public Houses” and live-work additions for an existing housing stock, she proposes a culinary urbanism for southern Florida. Lastly, her talk will make an argument for coupling the post-digital project with representation as illustrated in a Boston pop-up shop, cluster of cabins in Wyoming, and an eighty-thousand square foot paving system near to the Everglades.

Anderson Anderson Architecture is a respected, award-winning design firm with experience in a broad range of project types. Partners Mark Anderson and Peter Anderson started the firm as a design-build construction company in 1984. With a strong foundation in the practicalities of construction, we have since grown into a diversely experienced architecture firm collaborating with many other general contractors, manufacturers and construction professionals to provide clients with design excellence, high-quality execution, and experienced representation of the client’s interests throughout the construction process. Maintaining a relatively small design staff assures close personal attention to the firm’s designs projects. Mark and Peter Anderson work together as the lead designers directing all of the firm’s projects, working closely with our clients and collaborators.

Jane Wernick FREng Hon FRIBA FRSA CEng FIStructE FICE is a structural engineer who likes to collaborate with architects and other designers on any project that gives delight.  She has extensive experience of unusual and challenging structures designed in collaboration with leading architects.  She worked at Arup for many years, including running the Los Angeles office from 1986 to 1988, and was the engineer behind the structural design of the Millennium Wheel. In 1998 she founded Jane Wernick Associates.

She is a member of numerous panels such as Design Council Cabe, the EDGE and Building Futures, while “Building Happiness – Architecture to make you smile”, which she edited, discusses contemporary ideas and debates around the nature of the built environment.  A choral singer and keen gardener, she can also occasionally be found swimming in the Hampstead ponds.  She has taught at many architecture schools and lectured at universities around the world.

Volkan Alkanoglu is the founding principal of Volkan Alkanoglu | DESIGN LLC and has a  uniquely international background. He was born in Turkey, raised in Germany, and studied architecture at the Hochschule der Künste in Berlin, the Peter Behrens School of Architecture in Düsseldorf, and received his Master of Architectural Design degree with Distinction at the Bartlett School of Architecture, University College London.

His research and design work has been exhibited at several institutions including the Royal Academy of Arts in London and has been featured in international publications. In 2006, he was nominated for the Young Architect of the Year Award in the UK in recognition of exceptional contributions to the progress of architecture. Volkan Alkanoglu has collaborated as a Designer and Architect in several architectural practices in Germany, the United Kingdom, and the USA. During his tenure as a Project Director and Project Architect, he worked on many award winning projects with highly acclaimed international status.

He is currently serving on the design and visual studies faculty at  the Southern California Institute of Architecture (SCI-Arc)  in Los Angeles, California. He is also as TVS Design Distinguished Critic in the Georgia Tech School of Architecture.

Volkan Alkanoglu is a registered Architect with the AKNW (Architektenkammer Nordrhein-Westfalen) in Germany, and a LEED Accredited Professional (Leadership in Energy and Environmental Design) in the USA.

About the Lecture

Professor Spuybroek will discuss why Ruskin’s notion of the Gothic is a much better candidate for digital architecture than Deleuze’s Baroque Fold. He will advocate the return to Ruskin’s 'vital' beauty, while steering away from the Scrutonian call for harmony and 'typical' beauty.

This book has been praised as a breakthrough. Marcos Cruz is the Director of the Bartlett School of Architecture in London where he is also Studio Master of MArch Unit 20. His varied teaching activity as a researcher, tutor and critic has been carried out at many Schools of Architecture, including University College London, University of Westminster and University of California Los Angeles. 

Cruz studied architecture at the ESAP Porto, while also frequenting courses at the ETSAB in Barcelona. After moving to London he gained a master’s degree in Architectural Design in 1999 and later a PhD by Design research in 2007. His investigations about Neoplasmatic Architecture, which focused on a contemporary discussion about the body and the impact of bio-technology on architecture, won the RIBA President’s Medals Research Award for Outstanding PhD Thesis in 2008.

Cruz co-founded the atelier marcosandmarjan in 2000, combining the practice and teaching of architecture, along with experimental design research. Currently he and his partner Marjan Colletti are working on a major mixed-used project for Taipei Taiwan.

Cruz is author Flesh and Vision (Forum da Maia, 2000), Unit 20 (University of Valencia/ACTAR, 2002), Unpredictable Flesh (Mimesis, 2004), marcosandmarjan – Interfaces/Intrafaces (SpringerWienNewYork, 2005), AD – Neoplasmatic Design (John Wiley & Sons, 2008), and PhD Research Projects 2009 (Bartlett UCL, 2009).

Scott Ingram’s work comments on art and architecture in human environments. Based in an American aesthetic, his range of art works include paintings, drawings, sculpture and photography as well as functional objects. Growing up in the Midwest, he was heavily influenced by the great modern architects of Chicago. Working for the Des Moines Art Center, Scott developed an in-depth understanding of contemporary art.

Scott has been exhibiting for more than 15 years and has been included in exhibitions around the United States as well as Spain and Canada. Most recently he exhibited at Solomon Projects, and Emily Amy Gallery here in Atlanta and Anna Kustera Gallery in New York, as well as Florida Atlantic University. He is currently preparing an exhibition of his architectural works with Auburn University.

MARYANN THOMPSON, FAIA

Maryann Thompson Architects

Maryann Thompson, FAIA, was educated at Princeton University and the Graduate School of Design at Harvard University, where she is a member of the Architecture faculty.  She founded Maryann Thompson Architects in 2000, following her tenure as a founding partner of Thompson and Rose Architects.  She specializes in architecture that is sustainable, regionally driven, and which heightens one’s sense of site and landscape.  Her architectural investigations revolve around ideas like the creation of a rich and thoughtful edge between inside and outside; the utilization of light as a material; and strategies for employing warm, natural materials to accentuate a sense of place.  Thompson carries degrees in both architecture and landscape architecture, bringing to her practice an interdisciplinary approach where issues of site and landscape are central to design thinking. 

Thompson’s work has garnered some 60 design awards, including two AIA National Honor Awards and numerous AIA New England Design Honor Awards and BSA Honor Awards for Design Excellence. Her projects have been widely published in magazines including Architectural Record, Architectural Digest, the Boston Globe, Design New England, Boston Magazine, New England Home, Landscape Architecture Magazine, Art New England, Progressive Architecture, Architecture, and in various architectural books, including Norton's A Guide to 250 Key Twentieth-Century American Buildings, 40 Under 40, and Contemporary American Architects.  

Patrik Schumacher is partner at Zaha Hadid Architects and founding director at the AA Design Research Lab. He joined Zaha Hadid in 1988.

Patrik Schumacher studied philosophy and architecture in Bonn, London and Stuttgart, where he received his Diploma in architecture in 1990. In 1999 he completed his PHD at the Institute for Cultural Science, Klagenfurt University.  Patrik Schumacher has been teaching at various architectural schools in Britain, Continental Europe and the USA since 1992.  In 1996 he founded the "Design Research Laboratory" with Brett Steele, at the Architectural Association School of Architecture in London, and continues to serve as one of its co-directors.

He has lectured and acted as a guest critic at numerous international institutions, including The Royal College of Art and the Architectural Association in London England, The Angewandte Academy of Applied Arts in Vienna, Syracuse University in Syracuse, New York, the University of Houston in Texas and the Southern California Institute of Architecture (SciArc) in Los Angeles, among many others. Since 2001, he was appointed as an Assistant Professor of Architectural Design in Germany. Among other schools, he taught for more than six years at the RWTH Aachen, one of Germany's leading universities. Since 2009, he is appointed as a guest professor for architectural design at the Technical University Munich.

Educated in Germany, the US and England, sponsored by a Fulbright scholarship and a DAAD grand, Mark Mückenheim received his Master of Architecture from Parsons School of Design, New York and his Graduate Diploma in Architecture at the Bartlett School of Architecture, University College London.

Before establishing his own architecture practice in 2001, he worked and collaborated with different architecture firms in Germany, USA and England. During this time, he gained extensive professional experience through working on a number of projects, among them the celebrated Kunsthaus in Graz (with SpacelabUK Peter Cook & Colin Fournier - London) and Scott Free, a film production company in Los Angeles for the directors Ridley and Tony Scott (with Barton Myers and Associates - Los Angeles).

Mark Mückenheims diverse portfolio ranges from concrete architectural projects of different scales and complexity to "speculations" – architectural visions that cross the boundaries of the field, informing the design potential of his office. He received the highly regarded German Young Architect's Design Award, Förderpreis NRW and the MACEF Design Award in Milan and was listed among the "top 10 under 40" German architects by the interactive architecture magazine NIB in Rome. His projects have been featured in various international books and journals, recent publications include participation in the books "Architectural Model - lead to design" and "Mobile Architecture" by DAMDI Architecture Publishing Co. Korea, "Future Architecture" a book publication by Linksbooks Barcelona and "Concept Architecture" by Rihan, Hong Kong. His work has also gained a wide reputation through a number of exhibitions in Germany and abroad most recently the house of architecture in Lille – France, the German Architecture center in Berlin and the 12th Architecture Biennale in Venice.

Benjamin Ibarra-Sevilla is currently a Research Fellow at the Center for World Heritage Studies (CWHS) and Assistant Professor of Architecture at the University of Minnesota. He is an architect who graduated from Autonomous National University of Mexico with Merit and who holds a Degree in Building Conservation from the Excellence Program of the Carolina Foundation and the University of “Alcala de Henares”, Spain. His work includes case studies of ancient mason techniques, stereotomy, descriptive geometry and architectural geometry informed by form-resistant structures.  His research focuses on the transmission of building technology from Europe to the Americas, making emphasis on the constructive and geometric analysis of sixteenth-century ribbed vaults. These efforts have been published numerous times and he has lectured in different academic institutions of Mexico, Uruguay, Argentina, Spain and the U.S.
