AAUW International Fellowships support women who are not U.S. citizens or permanent residents pursuing full-time graduate study in a STEM discipline in the United States. The award is $20,000 for a master's degree or $25,000 for a doctoral degree, disbursed in two equal payments at the beginning and midpoint of the fellowship term.

Eligibility

• Applicants must identify as women and must be non-U.S. citizens without U.S. permanent resident status.
• Applicants must be admitted to or enrolled in a first master's degree or an academic or professional doctorate, and the degree must be in a STEM discipline.
• Minimum 3.5 cumulative GPA on a 4.0 scale for the highest degree earned.
• At least one academic degree, earned in the U.S. or abroad, equivalent to a U.S. bachelor's degree.
• Full-time study at an institution accredited by the U.S. Department of Education, with residence in the U.S. during the fellowship period.
• The program must begin on or before September 15, 2027 and finish on or after April 30, 2028.
• Proof of English proficiency: TOEFL iBT 79+, IELTS 6.5+, Cambridge 176+, or a native-speaker statement.

How this award works

This is a nomination-based award. Students do not apply directly to P.E.O. International. Chapter B-P.E.O., based in Atlanta, accepts applications from Georgia Tech students, reviews them, and interviews candidates. The candidate Chapter B selects then completes an online application to P.E.O. International.

• Must hold at least a bachelor's degree and be enrolled at an accredited U.S. or Canadian college or university.
• Expected graduation date for the doctoral-level degree must fall between April 2028 and August 2029.

“What Stops Menstrual Bleeding? From Spiral Arteriole Hemodynamics to Heavy Menstrual Bleeding” - Raphaelle Dodart, Ph.D. Student, David Ku, Advisor

Abstract

Heavy menstrual bleeding (HMB) is common, but the mechanisms that control blood loss during menstruation remain poorly understood. Computational analysis of menstrual blood loss and uterine vascular anatomy suggests that spiral arterioles are a plausible major source of menstrual bleeding. The high shear rates generated within these small vessels may also favor shear-induced platelet aggregation (SIPA), providing a potential mechanism for rapid hemostasis following endometrial shedding. An ongoing clinical study at Georgia Tech examines whether dysfunction in SIPA and primary hemostasis is present in a subset of women with HMB. This work connects spiral arteriole hemodynamics with clinical measurements of hemostatic function to better understand why menstrual bleeding becomes excessive in some women.

“Synthetic Notch Circuits Enable In Vivo Measurement of Endogenous Forces on Immune Cell Receptors” - Menglan Li, Research Scientist, Georgia Tech 

Abstract

Understanding how mechanical forces influence the signaling pathways of immunoreceptors is essential for advancing research in immunology and immunotherapy. Despite in vitro evidence of endogenous forces exerted by immune cells on immunoreceptors, in vivo measurement has been challenging due to technological limitations. Here, we present a novel technology platform based on synthetic Notch (SynNotch) circuits, enabling in vivo reporting of cell-generated forces on specific receptors. Our platform utilizes the mechano-sensitive properties of the Notch receptor, re-engineering it by replacing its ligand-binding domain with a single-chain variable fragment (scFv) of an antibody targeting the receptor of interest. The SynNotch receptor's activation induces the expression of a reporter gene. By adoptively transferring receiver cells expressing SynNotch into animals, we can measure the forces exerted by sender cells on the target receptor in vivo. We validated this platform using T cells as receiver cells and B cells as sender cells, with CD40 as the target receptor. Our results showed that B cells exert forces on CD40-SynNotch bonds, leading to the activation of SynNotch at forces around 2.4 pN per bond, increasing to a plateau at approximately 6.4 pN per bond. This mechanotransduction significantly influenced B cell signaling. This technology provides a powerful tool for investigating receptor-mediated mechanosensing and mechanotransduction in various biological contexts.

Title: Exploring many-body excitons with resonant inelastic X‑ray scattering

Abstract: Excitons—correlated electron–hole pairs—play a central role in the optical and electronic properties of solids. In quantum materials, strong electronic correlations and exchange interactions can produce unconventional many-body excitons whose momentum dependence, symmetry, and coupling to magnetism remain poorly understood. In this talk, I will show how resonant inelastic X-ray scattering (RIXS) [1], with its combined sensitivity to energy, momentum, and excitation symmetry, provides a powerful view of these states. I will discuss magnetically propagating Hund’s excitons in NiPS3 [2], dispersive dark excitons in CrI3 [3], and anisotropic excitonic states in CrSBr [4]. Together, these results illustrate how excitons can encode and transmit the intertwined spin, orbital, and charge character of quantum materials. I will conclude with an outlook on using ultrafast pump–probe RIXS to create and track such states away from equilibrium.

Bio: I am the X-ray Scattering Group Leader at Brookhaven and run a research program that focuses on resonant inelastic X-ray scattering (RIXS) of quantum materials. My research interests include complex oxides, strongly spin–orbit-coupled materials, quantum heterostructures, non-equilibrium states, and topology in crystalline materials. I earned my PhD from the University of Cambridge in 2010. My work has been recognized with a Department of Energy Early Career Award in 2014 and the Distinction of Tenure from Brookhaven in 2022, and I currently serve on the editorial board of Physical Review X.

Bio: Lars Ruthotto is a Professor in the Departments of Mathematics and Computer Science at Emory University, where he is a member of the Scientific Computing Group and directs the Emory REU/RET Site for Computational Mathematics for Data Science. He earned his PhD in Mathematics from the University of Muenster in 2012 and was a postdoc at the University of British Columbia before joining Emory. His research develops computational methods at the interface of scientific computing, optimization, machine learning, and inverse problems, with recent emphasis on generative modeling, high-dimensional partial differential equations, and stochastic optimal control. He is a recipient of the NSF CAREER Award and serves as a Section Editor for the SIAM Journal on Scientific Computing.

Title: The Computation of Confidence in Perceptual Decision-Making 

Abstract: This dissertation investigates the computational mechanisms underlying confidence in perceptual decision-making through three related studies. Study 1 uses transcranial magnetic stimulation (TMS) to establish when confidence is computed, revealing that the dorsolateral prefrontal cortex (DLPFC) contributes to confidence during a broad temporal window overlapping with decision-making. Study 2 tests competing computational theories — Bayesian Confidence Hypothesis (BCH) versus Confidence in Raw Evidence Space (CRES) — in two-choice tasks, finding consistent support for evidence-based rather than probability-based confidence computation. Study 3 extends this investigation to multi-alternative decisions using a novel dot numerosity paradigm, demonstrating that confidence tracks the difference between the two highest evidence values rather than choice probability. Together, these studies advance a mechanistic framework in which confidence emerges in parallel with decisions and operates on sensory evidence rather than probability estimates.

Abstract

Differentialprivacy provides a rigorous framework for controlling how much the behavior ofa randomized computation can change when an individual’s data changes. Yetunderstanding and deploying differentially private computations raises severalfundamental questions: How private is a given computation? Can we designcomputations with better privacy–utility tradeoffs? And can we verify that arealized computation actually satisfies its claimed privacy guarantee?

Thisdissertation approaches these questions by interpreting differential privacythrough the lens of indistinguishability.Rather than working with a single representation, I characterize thisindistinguishability through different views and reductions that make therelated privacy questions tractable. These characterizations lead to twocomplementary approaches. In the black-box approach, I reason from samples of a computation’s observedoutputs, using classification and hypothesis testing to estimate and audit itsindistinguishability. This line of work develops from black-box estimation of(epsilon, delta)-privacy, to estimation/auditing of the full f-DP curve, tosequential and one-run privacy auditing.

Thesecond is an analytical approach, which exploitsdistributional structure in the observer’s view to derive tractablecharacterizations of indistinguishability. I study computations whoseobservable outputs are Gaussian and develop tools for characterizing theirdifferential privacy guarantees, enabling both privacy analysis and mechanismdesign. Building on this perspective, I also study additive-noise mechanisms,establishing the asymptotic optimality of Gaussian noise among additive-noisemechanisms in high dimensions and designing improved mechanisms in lowdimensions.

Together,this dissertation develops a methodology for studying differential privacy asan indistinguishability notion: characterize indistinguishability throughdifferent views, and use the resulting characterizations to address the threefundamental problems in differentially private computations.

Title: Continuum Multiphysics Modeling of Deformation, Damage, and Microstructural Evolution in Energy Storage Materials

Abstract: The growing demand for energy storage spans a broad range of applications with fundamentally different performance requirements. In transportation, the continued electrification of vehicles motivates battery technologies with high specific energy density, including all-solid-state batteries employing high-capacity electrode materials such as silicon. In stationary applications, increasing energy demand and the need for efficient storage and utilization of thermal energy motivate technologies such as thermochemical energy stor- age, where salt-hydrate materials offer high volumetric energy density and long-duration storage with way economical cost compared with Li-ion batteries. Despite their distinct energy-storage mechanisms, these material systems share an important mechanics challenge. Many materials capable of storing large amounts of energy undergo substantial changes in chemical composition during operation, which are accompanied by correspondingly large deformations. The resulting stresses, damage, and evolution of the internal microstruc- ture can alter transport pathways and ultimately limit the cycling stability and realizable energy-storage performance of the material. Large deformations in energy-storage materials give rise to coupled physical phenomena that influence both mechanical integrity and transport behavior. In electrochemical batteries, for example, heterogeneous lithiation can produce non-uniform strain and stress fields, which in turn affect electrochemical reaction and transport through changes in local chemical potential and ion-transport pathways. In thermochemi- cal energy storage, hydration and dehydration involve coupled heat and mass transport through a porous microstructure whose evolving porosity and interparticle contact determine the effective thermal conductiv- ity of the material. These examples demonstrate that the macroscopic performance of high-energy-density storage materials cannot be understood solely from their intrinsic material properties. Instead, predictive continuum models must account for the evolution of internal microstructure, stress, and damage and their coupling with chemical and thermal transport. In this proposal, two different energy-storage material systems are investigated, namely amorphous silicon (a-Si) anodes for all-solid-state batteries (ASSBs) and SrBr2 hydrates for thermochemical energy storage. ~(omitted due to words limit)~ A key unresolved challenge in these materials is predicting the evolution of microstructure during elec- trochemical and thermochemical cycling. To address this challenge, the present frameworks will be extended to incorporate evolving mechanical and thermo-chemical contact between particles, allowing new contacts to form and transport pathways to develop as the material undergoes large reaction-induced deformation. The resulting framework will therefore permit initially discrete particles to merge into connected material domains, while subsequent separation and fracture are captured through phase-field damage. In this manner, the evolving microstructure, including the formation and loss of contacts, changes in transport pathways, and development of damage, can be predicted directly during cycling. The framework will then be used to investigate how microstructural design parameters, including particle morphology and composition, binders, and prescribed defects, may be used to control stress redistribution and damage evolution. Together, these developments will provide a predictive approach for designing evolving microstructures that maintain me- chanical integrity and transport performance in high-energy-density storage materials.

The goal of the National Safety Council's DDC is to provide drivers with knowledge and safe driving techniques to prevent accidents and violations. This course focuses on accident prevention through hazard recognition and application of accident-avoidance techniques. In addition, the course addresses common driving violations that result in accidents and how to change driving habits to eliminate moving violations.

Throughout the 6-hour course, participants learn how to recognize both potential and immediate hazards, how to avoid accidents in a variety of driving conditions and how to choose safe and legal driving behaviors. The emphasis is on identifying and choosing safe and legal behind-the-wheel behaviors and actions.

In order to attend this course you must have a valid state driver license.

You are entitled to a discount on your auto insurance in Georgia after the completion of this course.

Accessibility requirements for research articles, dissertations, and teaching materials are becoming more rigorous — and it's not optional anymore. The European Accessibility Act (EAA) took effect in June 2025. The U.S. ADA Title II update begins initial compliance for larger entities in April 2027. And publishers are introducing their own accessible publishing guidelines.

For many institutions, meeting these standards has meant expensive proprietary software or hours of manual document tagging. That's starting to change.

Title: Growing the RIFT: an update on features and applications for the gravitational wave inference code RIFT

Abstract:
As the sensitivity of the gravitational wave (GW) detectors improve, the number of detections for future observing runs are expected to dramatically increase. Due to this, the need for fast, accurate, and increasingly automated parameter inference code becomes ever more relevant. The GW parameter inference code RIFT is a grid-based code that takes advantage of the parameter-dependencies of terms within the likelihood to efficiently marginalize the extrinsic parameters. This piecewise approach to the construction of the likelihood allows for highly parallelizable calculations and computational speed compared to standard Markov-Chain Monte Carlo methods. In this talk, I will present some recent improvements to RIFT as well as some recent applications where RIFT was used to produce novel results. This includes analyses with initially unbound, eccentric-precessing, and eccentric-matter waveforms. Fast and accurate inference of these more exotic sources will be essential as we approach design sensitivity of LIGO/Virgo and look forward to 3G detectors.

Topics may include AI-assisted problem solving, literature searches, mathematical experimentation and computation, writing and editing, software development, conjecture generation, proof discovery and verification, and AI-assisted or automated formalization using Lean and other proof assistants.

We will also discuss the broader effects of AI on mathematical research and on the profession of mathematics.

Although both are important subjects, the group will generally not focus on the use of AI in teaching or on the mathematics underlying AI systems.

The group is intended primarily for graduate students, postdocs, and faculty, but anyone with an interest in the subject is welcome. Presentations will be aimed at a broad mathematical audience.

Lunch will be provided at no cost to attendees. RSVPs are not required, and food will be available on a first-come, first-served basis.

What happens at a meeting?

A typical meeting will begin with a 20–30-minute presentation, followed by discussion.

Presentations might include:

• a useful way someone has found to use AI in their mathematical work;
• a demonstration of a particular AI tool or workflow;
• a case study involving AI-assisted mathematical research;
• AI-assisted proof formalization using Lean or another proof assistant;
• a book-club-style discussion of an essay, blog post, or paper; or
• discussion of a recent AI-assisted mathematical discovery, counterexample, or other development.

Suggestions and volunteers are very welcome.
