{"378481":{"#nid":"378481","#data":{"type":"news","title":"Instructors Wanted for First-Year Seminar","body":[{"value":"\u003Cp class=\u0022p1\u0022\u003EMany of next year\u2019s freshmen have already been admitted to Georgia Tech, and they\u2019ll need some help getting adjusted once they are on campus. \u0026nbsp;\u003C\/p\u003E\u003Cp class=\u0022p5\u0022\u003EOne of Tech\u2019s primary ways of acclimating freshmen to college life is through GT 1000, the first-year seminar. The Center for Academic Enrichment is currently seeking faculty and staff members to teach it for fall 2015.\u003C\/p\u003E\u003Cp class=\u0022p5\u0022\u003EThe one-credit course is designed to help first-year students adjust to college life, learn about their majors and related careers, and introduce them to campus resources.\u0026nbsp;\u003C\/p\u003E\u003Cp class=\u0022p5\u0022\u003EFor instructors, it provides an opportunity to get a glimpse of campus from the student point of view.\u003C\/p\u003E\u003Cp class=\u0022p5\u0022\u003E\u201cThe most exciting part of teaching was having meaningful exchanges with freshmen, in a small group, and getting to know and understand some of their challenges and concerns,\u201d said Yves Berthelot, vice provost for International Initiatives, who co-taught a section of the course in fall 2014. \u201cI also felt that they were deeply appreciative that I was willing to spend time with them and share some of my experience at Tech.\u201d\u003C\/p\u003E\u003Cp class=\u0022p5\u0022\u003EEach section has between 15\u201320 students, and instructors are assisted by three to four upperclassmen known as team leaders. The Center for Academic Enrichment provides the curriculum, resources, and training for teaching the course.\u0026nbsp;\u003C\/p\u003E\u003Cp class=\u0022p5\u0022\u003EInstructors should expect to spend at least two to three hours per week on the course \u2014 an hour of class and one to two hours of administrative work. Instructors must have at least a bachelor\u2019s degree to be eligible to teach. Those with a master\u2019s degree may teach as the sole instructor; those with a bachelor\u2019s degree will be paired with a co-instructor with a master\u2019s degree, provided the pool of instructors allows for pairings. Instructors do not need to have prior teaching experience or student-oriented jobs on campus.\u003C\/p\u003E\u003Cp class=\u0022p5\u0022\u003E\u201cWe welcome people from any department at Georgia Tech, provided they have been employed at Tech for a year as of this summer and have the support of their department,\u201d said Nirmal Trivedi, director of Academic Transition Programs.\u0026nbsp;\u003C\/p\u003E\u003Cp class=\u0022p5\u0022\u003EThe deadline to apply is Monday, March 30.
