However, climatic change is driving severe disruption across Africa, causing prolonged dry seasons and erratic rainfall. As a result, farmers are facing lower farming yield. To mitigate this serious challenge, farmers must adopt modern and green technologies, like solar irrigation. To show the potential of solar irrigation system to mitigate this critical problem, a research project has been developed with the collaboration of Georgia Tech, University of Rwanda and Adama Science and Technology University. The project aims at developing a PV irrigation system that integrates IoT and controllers for real-time monitoring of the performance of the PV-irrigation system and for optimizing water conservation. This project is envisioned to be a prototype model for further scaling up the deployment of PV-irrigation systems in Africa to enhance sustainable agricultural.
As part of the whole project, this seminar focuses more on the design and economic assessment of the system for a particular village in Rwanda.

Bio:

Getachew Biru Worku obtained his MSC and PhD in Electrical Engineering from Dresden University of
Technology, Germany. In this talk I will describe how FRBs have evolved from a phenomenological mystery into a quantitative probe of compact-object engines and intervening plasma. I will discuss the evidence connecting at least some FRBs to highly magnetized neutron stars (magnetars), the constraints imposed by energetics, repetition, burst durations, host environments, and multiwavelength limits, and the theoretical challenges of producing coherent emission with such high brightness temperatures. I will then show how the same signals can be used as backlights for cosmic plasma, including the intergalactic medium and small-scale plasma structures near the source. Within this family of secondary metabolites, several structurally complex members are biosynthetically derived through oxidation of the tetracyclic Securinega monomers. In this presentation, I will discuss our group’s recent discoveries in the chemical synthesis of highly oxidized Securinega alkaloids. I will also highlight research extending beyond total synthesis, including the development of a Securinega alkaloid-based molecular photoswitch, the chemically guided elucidation of (allo)securinine biosynthesis, and the anticipation and subsequent discovery of natural products through chemical synthesis.

Bio:

Sunkyu Han is a Professor in the Department of Chemistry at Korea Advanced Institute of Science and Technology (KAIST), where he has served on the faculty since 2014 and was promoted to full Professor in 2024. He received his B.S. in Chemistry, summa cum laude, from KAIST. He then earned his Ph.D. in organic chemistry at the Massachusetts Institute of Technology in 2012 under the supervision of Professor Mo Movassaghi, followed by postdoctoral studies at Yale University with Professor Scott J. Archaea and bacteria oxidize most of the methane that diffuses upward from vast reservoirs beneath the seafloor before it can reach the atmosphere. In this seminar, I will present recent findings from our lab on the role of microbes and their proteins on methane and methanol cycling in three habitats: under the seafloor, in a deep brine pool, and in the surface ocean. First, I will highlight our discovery of methane hydrate binding proteins made by subseafloor bacteria, and how collaboration with GT biochemists enabled characterization of these novel proteins that are only found in bacteria that inhabit deep seafloor sediments rich in methane. Second, I will present our recent study of marine archaea that prevent leakage of methane out of a deep anoxic salt pond on the seafloor of the Gulf of Mexico. Third, I will highlight our discovery of Methylaequorales, an uncultivated order of alphaproteobacteria that are highly active in the surface ocean and use lanthanide-requiring enzymes to grow on methanol. Despite recent progress, we have barely scratched the surface of knowledge of the biochemical repertoire of microbial proteins, particularly those from habitats rarely visited by humans, and the need for fundamental science to uncover the chemical potential of environmental microbes is stronger than ever.

  <status>1</status>  <created>1785167830</created>  <gmt_created>2026-07-27 15:57:10</gmt_created>  <changed>1785168074</changed>  <gmt_changed>2026-07-27 16:01:14</gmt_changed>  <promote>0</promote>  <sticky>0</sticky>  <teaser>School of Chemistry & Biochemistry - Seminar Series</teaser>  <type>event</type>  <sentence>School of Chemistry & Biochemistry - Seminar Series</sentence>

School of Chemistry & Biochemistry - Seminar Series

  <start>2026-09-17T15:30:00-04:00</start>  <end>2026-09-17T16:30:00-04:00</end>  <end_last>2026-09-17T16:30:00-04:00</end_last>  <gmt_start>2026-09-17 19:30:00</gmt_start>  <gmt_end>2026-09-17 20:30:00</gmt_end>  <gmt_end_last>2026-09-17 20:30:00</gmt_end_last>  <times>
      <value>2026-09-17T15:30:00-04:00</value>      <value2>2026-09-17T16:30:00-04:00</value2>      <rrule>  </rrule>      <timezone>America/New_York</timezone>      <timezone_db>America/New_York</timezone_db>      <date_type>datetime</date_type>
  </times>  <gmt_times>
      <value>2026-09-17 03:30:00</value>      <value2>2026-09-17 04:30:00</value2>      <rrule>  </rrule>      <timezone>America/New_York</timezone>      <timezone_db>America/New_York</timezone_db>      <date_type>datetime</date_type>
  </gmt_times>  <phone></phone>

  <location_url>

  </location_url>

  <contact>
Host: Neha Garg
</contact>  <fee></fee>  <extras>      </extras>  <location>EBB Kron 1005</location>  <media>
680676
      </media>  <hg_media>
          <nid>680676</nid>          <type>image</type>
Prof.-Jennifer-Glass---2-.jpg

                      <image_name>Prof.-Jennifer-Glass---2-.jpg</image_name>            <image_path>/sites/default/files/2026/07/27/Prof.-Jennifer-Glass---2-.jpg</image_path>            <image_full_path>http://hg.gatech.edu//sites/default/files/2026/07/27/Prof.-Jennifer-Glass---2-.jpg</image_full_path>            <image_740>http://hg.gatech.edu/sites/default/files/styles/740xx_scale/public/sites/default/files/2026/07/27/Prof.-Jennifer-Glass---2-.jpg?itok=G8iR3K0f</image_740>            <image_mime>image/jpeg</image_mime>            <image_alt>J Glass</image_alt>                              <created>1785167839</created>          <gmt_created>2026-07-27 15:57:19</gmt_created>          <changed>1785167839</changed>          <gmt_changed>2026-07-27 15:57:19</gmt_changed>
      </hg_media>  <boilerplate></boilerplate>  <boilerplate_text></boilerplate_text>  <sidebar></sidebar>  <related>      </related>  <files>      </files>  <groups>          <group id="85951">School of Chemistry and Biochemistry</group>      </groups>  <categories>
Seminar/Lecture/Colloquium
      </categories>  <event_terms>          <term tid="1795">Seminar/Lecture/Colloquium</term>      </event_terms>  <event_audience>          <term tid="78761">Faculty/Staff</term>          <term tid="177814">Postdoc</term>          <term tid="174045">Graduate students</term>          <term tid="78751">Undergraduate students</term>      </event_audience>  <keywords>      </keywords>  <userdata></userdata></node><node id="691178">
X-Ray Safety Training
  <uid>27580</uid>

X-Ray safety training is required prior to operating an x-ray machine and is comprised of a 2-hour classroom training.
