{"344401":{"#nid":"344401","#data":{"type":"event","title":"Panel Discussion on Flipping ECE Classes","body":[{"value":"\u003Cp\u003EFaculty thinking about \u0022flipping\u0022 all or part of a course or even just supplementing a course with video lectures, should attend this panel discussion by ECE faculty members who have \u0022flipped their classes.\u0022 The panel members have flipped\/blended courses from sophomore to graduate level. The panel members are listed below along with a brief description of their approaches (in order of the level of the corresponding courses, from graduate-level down to 2000 level):\u003C\/p\u003E\u003Cp\u003ETom Gaylord teaches ECE 6530 as a blended class with video modules viewed before class and credit given for in-class assigned discussion and for in-class contributed (spontaneous) discussion.\u003C\/p\u003E\u003Cp\u003EVincent Mooney has taught ECE 6132 and ECE 3060 for many years using Tegrity to partially flip classes, thereby covering many more examples in class as well as providing past recordings of interest such as previous exam questions plus review sessions and office hours discussions explaining difficult topics slowly in much greater detail.\u003C\/p\u003E\u003Cp\u003EMagnus Egerstedt flipped ECE4555 Embedded and Hybrid Control around his MOOC: Control of Mobile Robots and had the students do lots of real robotics experiments and projects in class.\u003C\/p\u003E\u003Cp\u003EMorris Cohen flipped ECE3025 in both Spring and Fall of 2014.\u0026nbsp; The key strategy employed in class, on homework, and in midterms, is to use two-stage questions that challenged a students\u0027 conceptual understanding. Students first answer the question on their own, and then are asked to reach a consensus in small groups, often via lively discussion.\u003C\/p\u003E\u003Cp\u003EAlenka Zajic flipped ECE3025 Electromagnetics in Spring 2014.
