{"329271":{"#nid":"329271","#data":{"type":"event","title":"Contemporary Talks: Mark Beasley","body":[{"value":"\u003Cp\u003EThe Georgia Tech community is invited to attend a free talk by New York curator, writer, and artist Mark Beasley at the Atlanta Contemporary Art Center on October 4.\u003Cem\u003E Contemporary Talks\u003C\/em\u003E is a series that connects Atlanta audiences with some of the most consequential thinkers and doers in the world of art and culture. The speakers share thoughts about their past and present projects\u2014what informs and motivates them, what challenges they face, and why it matters.\u003C\/p\u003E\u003Cp\u003EMark Beasley is currently curator at Performa, and programmed and commissioned a series of vocal concerts and artists\u2019 projects for Performa 13. He organized a four-month performance program in conjunction with the retrospective exhibition of Mike Kelley at MoMA PS1, New York, including Michael Smith and Blowfly, X-TG and Kim Gordon, and Jutta Koether. His recent curatorial projects with the Performa biennial include Frances Stark and Mark Leckey\u2019s \u003Cem\u003EPut A Song In Your Thing\u003C\/em\u003E at Abrons Theater; Robert Ashley\u2019s \u003Cem\u003EThat Morning Thing \u003C\/em\u003Eat the Kitchen; Mike Kelley\u2019s \u003Cem\u003EDay is Done\u003C\/em\u003E at Judson Church; Arto Lindsay\u2019s \u003Cem\u003ESomewhere I Read\u003C\/em\u003E; and the experimental music festival, co-curated with Mike Kelley, A Fantastic World Superimposed on Reality.\u003C\/p\u003E\u003Cp\u003EAs a curator with the public art organization Creative Time he curated Plot09: This World \u0026amp; Nearer Ones; Hey Hey Glossolalia: Exhibiting the Voice, and Javier Tellez\u2019s critically acclaimed film A Letter on the Blind. In 2011, he established the Malcolm McLaren Award with Young Kim for Performa, presented by Lou Reed to Ragnar Kjartansson. He has written for a number of periodicals including Frieze, ArtForum, The Serving Library, and contributed to many artist catalogues. He is currently a Fine Art PhD candidate at Reading University, U.K., and his first LP with the group Big Legs will be released in 2014 on the London- and Amsterdam-based Junior Aspirin Records.\u003C\/p\u003E\u003Cp\u003EFree and open to the public, the Contemporary is located within walking distance of campus.
