It has been\u0026nbsp;\u003Ca href=\u0022http:\/\/www.surgeongeneral.gov\/initiatives\/prevention\/2014-npc-status-report.pdf\u0022\u003Erecognized by the U.S. Surgeon General\u0027s Office\u003C\/a\u003E\u0026nbsp;as a go-to resource for training at the university and professional levels, and for relevant news at the critical intersection of health and place.\u003C\/p\u003E\u003Cp class=\u0022p1\u0022\u003E\u0022The public health and community design fields know that the way we build our neighborhoods, cities and regions impact population health,\u0022 says Georgia Tech city and regional planning professor Nisha Botchwey. \u0022The Built Environment and Public Health Clearinghouse provides training and retraining, and a community of resources to support professionals to build healthy places that can lead to healthy people.\u0022\u003C\/p\u003E\u003Cp\u003EThe base for the Clearinghouse\u2019s development took root in 2006, when Botchwey was prompted by an audience member\u0027s question at the 2006 American Public Health Association Annual Conference to create a multidisciplinary curriculum in planning and public health. In 2009, with support\u0026nbsp;from the\u0026nbsp;Centers for Disease Control and Prevention, Botchwey launched the\u0026nbsp;\u003Cem\u003EBuilt Environment and Public Health Curriculum,\u0026nbsp;\u003C\/em\u003Ewhich housed much of the resources used to create the model course. \u0022A Model Curriculum for a Course on the Built Environment and Public Health\u0022 was published by Botchwey and colleagues a few months later in the\u0026nbsp;\u003Cem\u003EAmerican Journal of\u0026nbsp;Preventive Medicine.\u0026nbsp;\u003C\/em\u003EThis early stage of the\u0026nbsp;\u003Cem\u003ECurriculum\u003C\/em\u003E\u0026nbsp;website provided resources primarily to the planning academy for development of planning and public health courses.\u0026nbsp;\u003C\/p\u003E\u003Cp\u003EThe growing interest from other disciplines and evidence of the built environment\u2019s impacts on population health led to a broader base of support for curation, expansion, and distribution of these resources. In 2012, Georgia Tech, with funding through the\u0026nbsp;National Prevention Strategy\u0026nbsp;and in Partnership with the\u0026nbsp;Centers for Disease Control and Prevention\u0026nbsp;and the\u0026nbsp;National Network of Public Health Institutes (NNPHI), led the \u003Ca href=\u0022http:\/\/www.bephc.gatech.edu\/sites\/default\/files\/documents\/public_health_and_community_design_workforce_final_report.pdf\u0022\u003EBuilding Bridges\u003C\/a\u003E\u0026nbsp;project,\u0026nbsp;which focused on enhancing multisectoral community design and public health approaches to promote population health and safety, prevent injuries, and to integrate health into decision-making through maintaining and building \u201ca skilled, cross-trained, and diverse prevention workforce.\u201d\u0026nbsp;Recommendations from the Building Bridges Expert Panel led to the expanded partnerships that helped launch the Built Environment and Public Health Clearinghouse earlier this year.\u003C\/p\u003E\u003Cp\u003EToday, the newly launched BEPHC \u003Ca href=\u0022http:\/\/healthyplaces.gatech.edu\/?_ga=1.101994953.935721734.1410872907\u0022\u003Ewebsite\u003C\/a\u003E offers both academic and professional training resources that address the link between public health and planning, architecture, health impact assessment, transportation engineering, and other fields. The academic training pages provide information on courses taught at the university level that link Public Health to the built environment, while the professional training pages resources include multi-sector tools, training, case studies and best practices to create, promote and maintain healthy places.\u003C\/p\u003E\u003Cp\u003EThe site additionally serves as a central source of information across the community design and public health sectors, and houses an expanded \u003Ca href=\u0022http:\/\/healthyplaces.gatech.edu\/glossary\u0022\u003Emultidisciplinary glossary\u003C\/a\u003E of over 1,100 terms.
