{"321791":{"#nid":"321791","#data":{"type":"news","title":"Modern Languages and Atlanta Public Schools Teachers Travel to Senegal to Study Wolof, Senegalese Culture","body":[{"value":"\u003Cp\u003EThis summer, the School of Modern Languages joined with 11 Atlanta Public Schools teachers to embark upon a four-week research project at the West African Research Center in Dakar, Senegal.\u003C\/p\u003E\u003Cp\u003EFunded by a \u003Ca href=\u0022http:\/\/www2.ed.gov\/programs\/iegpsgpa\/index.html\u0022\u003EFulbright-Hays Group Projects Abroad\u003C\/a\u003E grant obtained by\u0026nbsp;\u003Ca href=\u0022http:\/\/www.iac.gatech.edu\/faculty-and-staff\/faculty\/bio\/wiedorn_1\u0022\u003EMichael Wiedorn\u003C\/a\u003E and \u003Ca href=\u0022http:\/\/www.iac.gatech.edu\/faculty-and-staff\/faculty\/bio\/ippolito\u0022\u003EChristophe Ippolito\u003C\/a\u003E, Wiedorn traveled with the selected teachers and a \u003Ca href=\u0022https:\/\/www.ceismc.gatech.edu\/about-ceismc\/ceismc-staff\/donna-whiting\u0022\u003Erepresentative\u003C\/a\u003E of the Georgia Tech Center for Education Integrating Science, Mathematics, and Computing (CEISMC) to study the Wolof language and Senegalese culture.\u003C\/p\u003E\u003Cp\u003EThe project, \u201cSenegalese Curriculum Development for Georgia,\u201d sought to develop curriculum at the high school and university levels in addition to creating exchanges and collaborations among educators and their surrounding communities in Senegal and Atlanta. Participants took part in courses in Wolof, the most widely-spoken local language aside from French in Dakar, and African cultural studies. The project provided opportunities to study Wolof and Senegalese culture unavailable in the city of Atlanta, which is host to the country\u2019s second-largest Senegalese population.\u003C\/p\u003E\u003Cp\u003EThis project used the \u003Ca href=\u0022https:\/\/www.ceismc.gatech.edu\/GIFT\u0022\u003EGeorgia Intern Fellowships for Teachers\u003C\/a\u003E (GIFT) program for pre-departure and follow-up programs as well as the connections already in place thanks to the School of Modern Languages \u003Ca href=\u0022http:\/\/www.modlangs.gatech.edu\/study-abroad-lbat\/lbat-senegal\u0022\u003EFrench in Dakar study abroad program\u003C\/a\u003E and Georgia Tech\u2019s relationship with Atlanta Public Schools.\u003C\/p\u003E\u003Cp\u003EThe project is supported by the School of Modern Languages and the Ivan Allen College Office of the Dean.\u003C\/p\u003E\u003Cp\u003E\u003Cem\u003EThe contents of this article were developed in part under a grant from the Fulbright-Hays Group Projects Abroad (GPA), U.S. Department of Education.
