{"314971":{"#nid":"314971","#data":{"type":"news","title":"CACP Reports on Emergency Communication for Disabled Persons","body":[{"value":"\u003Cp\u003EResearchers at the Center for Advanced Communications Policy (CACP) have released a report, funded by the \u003Ca href=\u0022http:\/\/www.ncd.gov\/\u0022\u003ENational Council on Disabilities\u003C\/a\u003E, on effective communication for people with disabilities before, during, and after emergencies.\u003C\/p\u003E\u003Cp\u003EThe report to the President finds that the legitimate concerns of people with disabilities and other special needs populations in emergency situations are frequently overlooked or minimized. It identifies barriers, facilitators, and successful practices to providing effective emergency-related communications, especially accessibility issues, and reviews the enforcement of pertinent disability laws and regulations. The report includes recommendations for policy makers, federal partners, and emergency managers.\u003C\/p\u003E\u003Cp\u003E\u0026nbsp;\u201cThe communication needs of people with disabilities are not being fully integrated by emergency managers in planning efforts,\u201d stated \u003Ca href=\u0022http:\/\/www.cacp.gatech.edu\/jameswhite.php\u0022\u003EJames D. White\u003C\/a\u003E, Director of Communications Studies in the CACP and PI and principal author on the research project. \u0026nbsp;\u201cThere is a lack of guidance available to emergency managers on the communication needs of people with disabilities, resulting in poor outreach to the disability community. Technology plays an increasingly vital role in emergency communications yet remains largely inaccessible for many people with disabilities, and despite all the legal mandates to provide effective communication to people with disabilities before, during, and after emergencies.\u201d\u003C\/p\u003E\u003Cp\u003ERead a \u003Ca href=\u0022http:\/\/www.ncd.gov\/publications\/2014\/05272014\/\u0022\u003Efull copy\u003C\/a\u003E of the report, including key findings, recommendations and objectives.\u003C\/p\u003E\u003Cp\u003E\u003Cem\u003EThe \u003Ca href=\u0022http:\/\/www.cacp.gatech.edu\/ec.php\u0022\u003ECACP\u003C\/a\u003E is a research and policy development unit housed within the Ivan Allen College with a focus on advanced communications.
