About T. Dallas Smith
Smith began his commercial real estate career in 1982 at Atlanta Air Center Realty under the guidance of Thomas W. Tift Jr. as leasing and management representative for the portfolio. In 1989, he became the first African American broker at Cushman & Wakefield of Georgia. His affiliation with the company opened doors for many minority brokers. In 1995, he pioneered the brokerage division for H.J. Russell & Company, an African American-owned construction and management firm, where he served as VP of the Brokerage Division. In 2006, with the blessing of the late Herman J. Russell, Dallas opened T. Dallas Smith & Company, specializing in tenant representation.

T. Dallas Smith & Company has led projects across the country with metrics exceeding more than eight million square feet of tenant and buyer representation in office and industrial space, and more than five thousand acres of land acquisitions. Future cities development is becoming data-driven in the context of emerging technologies such as the internet of things, data science, and urban automation. Facing climate challenges, radical urban transitions, and impacts of technologies on the human environment, how will city design and technology enable communities to develop a more sustainable, resilient, and socially inclusive future by enhancing their quality of urban living? Globally connected primate cities, including Tokyo, Singapore, and Atlanta are experimenting with new models of smart cities as living laboratories to reduce urban carbon emissions to net zero by 2050 and to meet U.N. Sustainable Development Goals (SDG). The 2023 Smart Cities Systems Design Panel at Georgia Tech College of Design invites faculty and international speakers to share their experiences and novel approaches being tested in the above three cities. The panel discussion will explore how these new thoughts are applied to designing smart communities, smart campuses, and smart cities by incorporating urban design, data analytics, system thinking, and digital technologies.

A reception in the Cohen Gallery (second floor, East Architecture building) will open the exhibit of all the teams' proposals. 

The ULI Gerald D. Hines Student Urban Design Competition draws teams from around the globe to create a development proposal for a real, large-scale site. Each finalist will receive $10,000, and the winning team will receive $50,000.

This year 93 teams delivered proposals for a site in Oakland, California.

Dr. Raphael W. Bostic took office June 5, 2017, as the 15th president and chief executive officer of the Federal Reserve Bank of Atlanta. He is responsible for all the Bank's activities, including monetary policy, bank supervision and regulation, and payment services. In addition, he serves on the Federal Reserve's chief monetary policy body, the Federal Open Market Committee (FOMC). The Federal Reserve Bank of Atlanta serves the Sixth Federal Reserve District, which covers Alabama, Florida, and Georgia, and parts of Louisiana, Mississippi, and Tennessee. The Bank has branches in Birmingham, Jacksonville, Miami, Nashville, and New Orleans.

Dr. Catherine L. Ross is Harry West Professor and Director of the Center for Quality Growth and Regional Development (CQGRD) at the Georgia Institute of Technology.  She is Deputy Director of Georgia Tech’s Tier 1 University Center for Transportation System Productivity and Management, a $14 million research program.

In this presentation, Dr. Dannenberg will discuss how both transportation and public health professionals are increasingly recognizing the links between transportation and public health. A recently released report, the Transportation Research Board National Cooperative Highway Research Program NCHRP Research Report 932: A Research Roadmap for Transportation and Public Health, reviews what is known in this field and provides a plan for funding research over the next decade that can lead to greater consideration of health issues in transportation contexts.  Dr. Dannenberg served on the TRB oversight panel for this report (https://www.nap.edu/download/25644) and will provide highlights of the opportunities described in this report for conducting further research related to transportation and public health issues.

Andrew L. Dannenberg, MD, MPH, is an Affiliate Professor at the University of Washington in Seattle with faculty appointments in environmental health and in urban planning. Previously, he served as Team Leader of the Healthy Community Design Initiative at the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention in Atlanta and was one of the founders of the Healthy Places Research Group at Georgia Tech.  For the past two decades, his research and teaching have focused on examining the health and equity aspects of community design including land use, transportation, urban planning, architecture, and other issues related to the built environment. He has a particular interest in the use of health impact assessment as a tool to inform community planners about the health consequences of their decisions.  He is currently collaborating with Georgia Tech's Nisha Botchwey on the second edition of the book Making Healthy Places: Designing and Building for Health, Well-being, and Sustainability (http://www.makinghealthyplaces.com).

Background

Urban Analytics (UA) and Smart Cities (SC) research and degree programs are becoming more common in the U.S. and globally. UA and SC research has helped develop powerful techniques for spatial data creation, capture, and analysis; and has drawn talented individuals to this research.

Yet, these programs and research agendas often operate without an explicit ‘plan’ for how technology and data analysis will tackle real world issues. Because these fields are founded with technocratic and engineering problem-solving ideals (values inherent to analytics and ‘smart’ endeavors), research questions and execution in this field may be need re-definition and intervention if they are to help cities reach the most vulnerable citizens and improve daily life. Research and thought leadership in UA and SC should include the voices and input of the typical urbanite and those most in need. This field also should deeply consider how different perspectives on race, ethnicity, gender, sexual-orientation, disability and poverty status (and more) may add crucial variables to the study of urban analytics.  

Research Contribution

We will be generating solutions for how our research and teaching can include a more diverse body of tacit knowledge from the urban community and how we can solve real-life problems with data analytics. We will be developing strategies and recommending formal research frameworks (mixed-method, multi-scale, validating-by-interview, etc.) to guide UA and SC research towards championing citizen voices and helping people. Our goal is to empower UA students and researchers to shape urban research questions, methodologies and implementation in a way that positively impacts the city and its people.

We will have meaningful conversations and develop a guiding agenda that can serve as an ‘intervention’ that is needed as UA and SC fields mature. Without this discussion, these fields may not adopt the kinds of sensitivities towards diversity, inclusion and the human experience, that it needs to best serve the people. The agenda will help put forth:

• A plan to put crucial information into the hands of the city’s most vulnerable populations.
• Methods for using technology to collect data on spatial behaviors in a safe, privacy-securing way, and using the information to optimize locations of services and facilities.
• Designs for tech education for disadvantaged and underrepresented populations at multiple levels.
• Methods to identify which small changes can have the biggest impact.
• How to listen to and learn from citizens who need help and have first-hand perspectives (i.e. tacit knowledge) on the urban ecosystem.
• Open ended discussion on how to connect urban analytics to common-sense urban problems.

Activities

Our panel sessions will contain five speakers each, and will include a mixture of visuals and oral presentations.

Breakout sessions will divide our participants into 3 groups. The topics will be formed by our set of distinguished breakout leaders and can be adjusted to reflect the pressing needs of the day.

Please join us on Tuesday, February 4 for a presentation by  Jennifer R. DuBose, the Associate Director of the SimTigrate Design Lab and a Principal Research Associate with the College of Design at Georgia Tech.  

This presentation will provide an introduction to the Cognitive Empowerment Program with an emphasis on the activities taking place in the Innovation Accelerator. Mild cognitive impairment (MCI), often a precursor to Alzheimer's disease, affects up to 20 percent of American adults older than 65, and nearly a third of them will develop Alzheimer's disease within five years. Georgia Tech is collaborating with Emory Brain Health on the Cognitive Empowerment Program in Executive Park, funded by the Cox Foundation. This is a novel living laboratory focused on delivering therapeutic programs that leverage the technology and the built environment.  An ongoing part of the program is the Innovation Accelerator where the members work with researchers and students to develop solutions for everyday problems.

Jennifer R. DuBose is the Associate Director of the SimTigrate Design Lab and a Principal Research Associate with the College of Design at Georgia Tech. She is currently heading up the Innovation Accelerator for the new Cognitive Empowerment Program working with people living with mild cognitive impairment to develop practical solutions to everyday challenges.

Building Equity: Lessons in Sustainability from Community to College Campuses
Buildings represent a middle ground between high-level and small-scale infrastructure. For this reason, they embody specific factors at the intersection of equity and opportunity. For example, recent studies show a correlation between energy efficiency upgrades, usually of interest only to the landlord; and the likelihood of tenant financial burdens and disconnection notices for energy bills. Correlations such as these at the building scale can help reveal otherwise unseen implications of transitions to less environmentally impactful energy technologies. The idea of “just transitions” will be explored in this context, as will comparative approaches from different segments of the US population from college campuses to community settings.

Diana Hernández is an Assistant Professor of Sociomedical Sciences at Columbia University’s Mailman School of Public Health. She is also the Director of the Community Engagement Core of the NIEHS-funded Center for Environmental Health in Northern Manhattan. Dr. Hernández conducts research at the intersection of energy, equity, housing and health (E2H2). A sociologist by training, her work focuses on the social and environmental determinants of health by examining the impacts of policy and place-based interventions on the health and well-being of socioeconomically disadvantaged populations. A leader in the field, Dr. Hernández has advanced the concept of energy insecurity to reflect challenges associated with meeting basic household energy needs. Her research has explored its social and health implications using qualitative and quantitative methods. Much of her community-oriented research has been conducted with community groups and government agencies and several of her projects have been conducted in her native South Bronx neighborhood, where she also lives and invests in social impact real estate. Dr. Hernández’ cutting-edge work has been published in leading academic journals including the American Journal of Public Health, Energy Policy, Social Science and Medicine, and Health Affairs. Furthermore, her work has been supported by the National Institutes of Health, Housing and Urban Development and National Science Foundation as well as philanthropic organizations including the JPB Foundation and the Robert Wood Johnson Foundation, among others. Dr. Hernández is currently a member of RWJ’s Interdisciplinary Research Leaders program and was a JPB Environmental Health Fellow (Cohort 1) at the Harvard Chan School of Public Health. Dr. Hernández was appointed to NYC’s Environmental Justice Board in 2019, received the 2019 Public Health Service Award from the NY League of Puerto Rican Women, was the inaugural recipient of the Dean’s Junior Faculty Excellence in Leadership Award in 2016 and Mailman’s Junior Faculty Teaching Award in 2016. Dr. Hernández completed her doctoral training in Sociology at Cornell University (2010), her undergraduate degree at Hunter College- City University of New York (2002) and is a product of the New York City public school system.

This fall we have several new faculty members producing compelling work. We have invited three of them to share their research with the larger College.

Faculty participating in the forum represent architecture, industrial design, and city planning.

Let's meet them:

HyunJoo Oh is an assistant professor with a joint appointment in the School of Industrial Design and the School of Interactive Computing at Georgia Tech. Working at the intersection of human-computer interaction and design, she studies and builds computational design tools and methods that integrate everyday materials with computing. She explores how computing technologies can extend and transform familiar materials around us and investigates how those combinations can broaden creative possibilities for designers. 

Oh received her Ph.D. in Technology, Media, and Society from the University of Colorado, Boulder, with a graduate certificate in Cognitive Science in 2018 and has master’s degrees in Entertainment Technology from Carnegie Mellon University and Media Interaction Design from Ewha Womans University. Her work has been published at ACM SIGCHI conferences and maker community and widely used by K-12 teachers and maker spaces.

Elora Raymond is an assistant professor in the School of City and Regional Planning in the College of Design. Her research is at the intersection of real estate finance and socio-spatial inequality. She has explored the uneven housing market recovery following the real estate and financial crises of the 2000s, persistent and concentrated negative equity in the Southeast, the rise of single-family rental securitizations, and eviction rates in single-family rentals. She has ongoing projects on affordable housing issues among Pacific Islanders in the diaspora, and land tenure issues in the South Pacific.

Raymond earned her Ph.D. in City and Regional Planning from Georgia Tech in 2017. She has a B.A. in History from Brown University. Her research has been featured in the Washington Post, the New York Times, Bloomberg’s Businessweek, NPR’s Morning Edition, the Atlanta Journal-Constitution, Univision, and Radio New Zealand, among other news outlets.

Ryan Roark is the 2019-21 Ventulett NEXT Fellow at Georgia Tech’s School of Architecture. The Ventulett NEXT Generation Visiting Fellows is an initiative intended for young faculty who are at the beginning of their careers and interested in interdisciplinary teaching and research that merges design, technology, and culture. As an architectural designer and writer, she focuses on the role of history in building design and urban planning.

Ryan was a 2017 KPF Paul Katz Fellow in London, where she studied different typologies of design interventions into old buildings and the attitudes to history they represent. Her work at Georgia Tech continues this formal, tectonic, and historical investigation as well as examining the role augmented and mixed reality will play in the design of the 21^st-century city.

Alongside teaching and design, Ryan writes about the history of historic preservation, the relationship between individual and city from the 16^th century through the present, and the history of intellectual cross-pollination between microbiology and architecture. She has previously taught at Rice University and has worked at architecture firms in New York and Los Angeles. She has an MArch from Princeton University and a Ph.D. in Oncology from Cambridge University.

Latrice Rollins is the Assistant Director of Evaluation and Institutional Assessment at Morehouse School of Medicine Prevention Research Center. She provides evaluation plan development and management for academic and community-based programs focused on research infrastructure, public health workforce development programs, and community-based participatory approaches to reduce health disparities. She also co-leads the Data Monitoring and Evaluation Committee of the Prevention Research Center's Community Coalition Board. Dr. Rollins is also an Assistant Professor in the Morehouse School of Medicine Department of Community Health & Preventive Medicine and a Robert Wood Johnson Foundation Culture of Health Leader. She received a bachelor's in sociology from Spelman College and a master's and doctorate in social work from the University of Georgia.

Dennis Bryan is a Programmer Analyst III on Morehouse School of Medicine's Biomedical Informatics Team. He supports projects such as i2b2 database implementation, All of Us, Health 360x and data submissions tasks with the Grady Bioinformatics Team. Mr. Bryan is an expert in database management systems, web and programming languages, and various data analytics programs (e.g., SAS, R, Tableau, Power BI). He received a bachelor's in electrical engineering from Fairleigh Dickinson University and a master's in engineering from Rutgers University.

Karunamuni Ruvina Silva is a database administrator II on Morehouse School of Medicine's Biomedical Informatics Team. She supports projects such as i2b2, ACT, All of US, Health 360x, electronic health record extraction and data submissions tasks with the Grady Bioinformatics Team. She is an expert in Database development and management, web technology, data visualization, and application development and management. The lecture will address the sustainability of infrastructure and the Envision® rating system, developed at Harvard University. Then, sustainable infrastructure will be introduced as the starting point and a prerequisite for sustainable cities and an inextricable part of urban planning and configuration. The proposed systems approach emphasizes the synergies and interconnections between infrastructure processes, including physical structures and operations, natural processes, and the end-user. Each system is decoded, addressing (a) the main demand or consumption that must be covered by the system, (b) the strategic approach and resources to meet the demand, and (c) the facilities and networks required. When a system is relevant to the needs or performance of another system, the connection is highlighted supporting the development of multifaceted, integrated plans.

About Professor Spiro Pollalis

Spiro Pollalis, a Harvard University professor of 34 years, is an expert in the sustainability of infrastructure and cities. At Harvard, he has developed the Envision® sustainability rating system.

Professor Pollalis consults governments and the private sector on sustainability, and he is the chief planner for several sustainable cities, including a new city in Pakistan for 600,000 people, now under construction.

Professor Pollalis collaborates on sustainability with the World Bank, the Inter-American Development Bank, IFC, the United Nations, and the World Wide Fund For Nature (WWF). 

Prof. Pollalis has three degrees from MIT, including his Ph.D., and an MBA.

Nastaran Shishegar, a Ph.D. candiate in the School of Architecture at the University of Illinois at Urbana-Champaign, will give the talk.

She will look at the principals of human-centric lighting design for older adults. With the American senior population expected to increase dramatically over the next decade, this talk is timely.

As she describes her talk:

Lighting in buildings is one main environmental attribute that plays a significant role in managing biological, behavioral, and psychological symptoms through impacting visual and circadian systems.

Considering the age-related changes in eyes and circadian system, specialized lighting design is essential to promote overall health and well-being in older people.

This seminar describes specific lighting needs of older adults, explores scientific methods to design healthy environmental lighting for this age group, and outlines a recently conducted study which evaluates the effects of tuning ambient illuminations on improving sleep quality and cognitive functions in older adults.

About Nastaran Shishegar

Nastaran Shishegar is a Ph.D. candidate at the University of Illinois at Urbana-Champaign with an expected completion date of May 2020.

Her major focus is Technology and Performance/Health and Well-Being. Her minor focus is Lighting/Gerontology.

Her dissertation topic is Evaluating the Impacts of Tuning Ambient Illumination on Older Adults’ Sleep Quality, Mood, and Cognitive Performance.

Shishegar is also an architect and an adjunct instructor. She received her M.Arch from the University of Illinois at Urbana-Champaign, and her M.S. and B.S. from Iran University of Science and Technology.

Title:

Sensing and Improving Flood Awareness via Remote Sensing and Social Sensing

Abstract:

Remote sensing (RS) and social sensing (SS) have fundamentally facilitated the acquisition of flood awareness in many ways. Transcending field survey methods, remotely sensed images provide larger spatial coverage and make near real-time flood monitoring possible. Social sensing has witnessed increasing attention due to the popularity of crowdsourcing approaches. Volunteered geographical information (VGI), a type of crowdsourcing data, provides an alternative approach to reporting useful information about a flood in a real-time manner. In this talk, I will discuss some remote/social sensing challenges and innovative methods to monitor human-flood interactions during and after flood events. Specifically, I will address the potential of fusing heterogeneous data sources (RS and SS) via advanced geospatial models to provide enhanced flood awareness.

The title of his talk is Georgia Coastal and Marine Planning: A Policy and Mapping Initiative. His keynote is part of Session IV: Sustainability of Ocean Resources: Marine Spatial Planning.

Giarrusso explains: Georgia’s coastal and offshore resources face increasing pressure from a variety of factors, including onshore development, increasing population, demand for offshore fossil fuels, and climate change.

In order to better plan for and manage these impacts, the DNR Coastal Resources Division and Georgia Tech teamed up to create the Georgia Coastal and Marine Planner, an innovative GIS-based decision-making tool.This session will explore how GCAMP can assist a variety of stakeholders in navigating the complex technical and policy considerations of coastal and marine planning and development in Georgia.

The OceanVision Summit is a gathering of some of the leading minds in ocean and science technology. Participants are gathering at Georgia Tech this week for the summit, co-organized by researchers at Georgia Tech, The Smithsonian Institution, The Georgia Aquarium, and other leading institutions focused on studying and preserving this global resource.

“The goal is to highlight ocean-based science and engineering successes in the areas of resilience, adaptation, mitigation and sustainability and promote scalable solutions across human, climate and ecological dimensions,” their website states.

Giarrusso is also associate director of CSPAV. His teaching, research, and consulting activities focus on GIS-based planning solutions for land conservation, public health, alternative energy, coastal and marine resources, and environmental protection.

Stewart C. Weaver is the Chief Information Officer/Chief Technology Officer (CIO/CTO) for the Georgia Department of Public Health.

He provides the government-wide vision and strategic leadership in pursuing world-class excellence in digital integration, information management and technology, and cybersecurity. He came to the State government after more than 20 years in the private sector. 

Prior to becoming the agency's CTO, he served as Strategy Consultant leading enterprise infrastructure initiatives and Data Center migrations for companies in the financial industry. Prior to consulting, he worked in various leadership positions for InterContinental Hotels Group (IHG), Emory HealthCare, and AT&T Communications.

The forums are an opportunity for us to share our design- and technology-focused research. This academic year we have several new faculty members producing compelling work. We have invited some of them to introduce their research to the larger college.

The faculty participating in the forum represent architecture, industrial design, and music.

Let's meet them:

Leila Aflatoony is an assistant professor in the School of Industrial Design. Her research and teaching approach lie in the fields of human-computer interaction (HCI) design and user experience (UX). She employs design approaches, methods, and emerging technologies (e.g. 3D printing, AR, VR) to address critical challenges in various areas of application such as healthcare and education.

She will talk on the practical application of personal-scale manufacturing technologies, such as 3D printers in the context of assistive technology (AT), which has been defined as any device or system that allows an individual to perform a task they would otherwise be unable to do. People with disabilities often need to assemble, modify, and repurpose a variety of devices and technologies from different organizations to meet their needs.  The goal of this research is to uncover how to implement digital fabrication technologies for sustainable use in clinical settings so that occupational therapy (OT) professionals, AT professionals, and end-users can collaborate on designing 3D models, which are customized to user’s specifications and needs.

Lisa Marks is an assistant professor in the School of Industrial Design. She teaches studio courses in the undergraduate and graduate programs. Her current research focuses on methods of combining endangered and traditional handcraft with algorithmic modeling in order to produce new modes of production. She has a Master of Industrial Design from Parsons School of Design and worked in New York for clients including Google, Nike, and Swarovski.

She was recently chosen as one of six finalists for the prestigious Lexus Design Award 2019. The international design competition recognizes up-and-coming creators around the world aspiring to “Design for a Better Tomorrow.” Marks' inventive design, Algorithmic Lace, is a post-mastectomy custom-crafted bra designed to avoid common bra discomforts after surgery.

Hyun Joo Oh is an assistant professor with a joint appointment in the School of Industrial Design and the School of Interactive Computing. Working at the intersection of human-computer interaction and design, she studies and builds creative technologies (tools, kits, and methods) that integrate computing and everyday materials. Based on a broad spectrum of design and computing technologies, she investigates fundamental questions on how people see and think and make – how those are closely linked and shape each other.

Her work has been published and exhibited at ACM SIGCHI conferences and maker community. She completed her Ph.D. in Technology, Media, and Society at the Craft Tech Lab & ATLAS Institute at University of Colorado, Boulder, and holds master’s degrees in Entertainment Technology from Carnegie Mellon University and Media Interaction Design from Ewha Womans University in South Korea.

Grace Leslie is an assistant professor in the School of Music and a researcher in the Center for Music Technology. At Georgia Tech, Leslie leads the Brain Music Lab, a community gathered around a unique facility combining EEG and other physiological measurement techniques with new technologies.

Previously, she was a fellow at the Neukom Institute for Interdisciplinary Computation at Dartmouth, where she performed research in the Neurology Group at Dartmouth Hitchcock Medical Center. As a postdoctoral fellow, she worked with the Affective Computing Group at the MIT Media Lab, where she developed musical brain- and body-interface systems to invite expression and experience of emotion. She received her BA and MA in music from Stanford University and her Ph.D. in Music & Cognitive Science at the University of California, San Diego.

Tarek Rakha is an assistant professor in the School of Architecture and faculty at the High Performance Building Lab. He is an architect, building scientist, and educator. His research aims to influence architecture, urban design, and planning practices through three areas of expertise: sustainable urban mobility and outdoor thermal comfort; daylighting and energy efficiency in buildings; and building envelope diagnostics using drones. As an academic in the United States and a registered architect in Egypt, Rakha seeks to combine multifaceted research approaches to issues of sustainability in design. He leads efforts in the acquisition and implementation of scholarly collaborations with government, industry, and academic partners.

Prior to joining Georgia Tech, Rakha taught at Syracuse University, Rhode Island School of Design, and Massachusetts Institute of Technology. He completed his Ph.D. in building technology at MIT, where he was part of the Sustainable Design Lab as a member of the developing team for umi, the urban modeling and simulation platform.

Urban automation refers to artificial intelligence, robotics, drones, and sensors are that being deployed in the built environment to support more efficient urban living and improved quality of life. 

While many benefits can be derived from urban automation, its various forms raise issues of access, privacy, safety, trust, control, and automated discrimination, that need to be addressed in its design and deployment.

The panelists of this College of Design Research Forum will explore ethical principles and values from a range of perspectives that include, autonomous vehicles, building AI and sensors, urban supply chain logistics, and disability services.

About the Research Forums
The College of Design Research Forums are intended to allow the College community and our friends across the campus to experience the design- and technology-focused research at Georgia Tech. From music technology to product design; from assistive technology to healthcare; from architecture to city planning, we explore the many ways technology can solve critical problems for the way we live.

The final forum of the 2018-2019 academic year will take place March 7, from 11 a.m. until noon in the Caddell Building, Flex Space.

The annual Schools of Architecture, City & Regional Planning, and Public Policy Career Fair connects the design community and other employers with prospective applicants from among its 400 students. The fair is held annually each spring and is highly anticipated by firms and alumni. In 2019, the Career Fair will be held on Friday, February 22, 2019.

June Williamson and Allison Allison Arieff will present and discuss innovative case studies and the forces helping or hindering their implementation. June Williamson is Associate Professor of Architecture at The City College of New York. She is author of Designing Suburban Futures and co-author of Retrofitting Suburbia as well as the forthcoming sequel. Allison Arieff is Executive Director of SPUR in San Francisco, Editorial Director of The Urbanist, contributing writer to The New York Times since 2006, and recipient of the 2018 American Institute of Graphic Arts Steven Heller Award for Cultural Commentary.

SCL IRC Seminar: Rethinking the Warehouse: Urban Space and Economy in an Age of Smart Logistics

Urban logistics automation is collapsing traditional boundaries between storage and delivery, extending the warehouse presence in the built environment. At the same time, the growth of e-commerce combined with logistics' need to avoid pauses or "friction" means that unprecedented volumes of goods are in near constant motion. This talk explores the potential of e-commerce driven changes to supply chain logistics, as well as consumer and business purchasing patterns, to alter the pattern of warehousing and more within metropolitan areas. There are a broad range of accompanying impacts for urban and local economic development. These include impacts on retail stores, warehouses, land-uses, transportation networks, workforce, policy and regulations (e.g., zoning). They are distinguishable by whether they impact most the "last-mile" aspect of supply chain and logistics, or the larger supply chain network linked to distribution and fulfillment centers.
