Black and white, rich and poor, men and women, old and young\u2014almost everyone had a huge stake in its course and outcome. During this period Georgia became the industrial, transportation, and arsenal hub of the Confederacy. This spring, Georgia Tech hosted the first annual symposium \u003Ca href=\u0022http:\/\/www.hts.gatech.edu\/civilwar\u0022 target=\u0022_blank\u0022\u003E\u003Cstrong\u003ETechnology and the American Civil War\u003C\/strong\u003E\u003C\/a\u003E to explore these themes at the intersection of history, technology, and liberal arts.\u003C\/p\u003E\u003Cp\u003EGeorgia Tech entities\u2014\u003Cstrong\u003EThe Sam Nunn School of International Affairs\u003C\/strong\u003E; the \u003Cstrong\u003ESchool of History, Technology, and Societ\u003C\/strong\u003Ey; the\u003Cstrong\u003E Ivan Allen College of Liberal Arts\u003C\/strong\u003E; and the Center for International Strategy, Technology, and Policy\u2014teamed up with the Civil War Round Table of Atlanta and the \u003Ca href=\u0022http:\/\/www.georgiabattlefields.org\/\u0022 target=\u0022_blank\u0022\u003EGeorgia Battlefields Association\u003C\/a\u003E to host panels on topics ranging from medical technologies and treatments to field operations and communications. An exhibition of artifacts from the civil war era was presented in the Student Center\u2019s Piedmont Room, adjacent to the theater in which the symposium was held.\u003C\/p\u003E\u003Cp\u003EThe symposium on technology and the American Civil War comprised part of Georgia Tech\u0027s contribution to the war\u2019s sesquicentennial commemoration. The program had over \u003Cstrong\u003E150\u003C\/strong\u003E attendees including students, faculty members, alumni, and community members. View the booklet passed out as part of the symposium \u003Ca href=\u0022http:\/\/www.iac.gatech.edu\/files\/wysiwyg\/file\/CivilWarSymposiumBooklet.pdf\u0022 target=\u0022_blank\u0022\u003Ehere\u003C\/a\u003E.\u003C\/p\u003E\u003Cp\u003E\u201cNot only was this campus part of the Battle of Atlanta,\u201d said \u003Ca href=\u0022http:\/\/www.iac.gatech.edu\/faculty-and-staff\/faculty\/bio\/goodman\u0022 target=\u0022_blank\u0022\u003ESeymour Goodman\u003C\/a\u003E, professor in \u003Cstrong\u003EThe Sam Nunn School of International Affairs\u003C\/strong\u003E, \u201cbut Georgia as a whole became the arsenal and refuge of the Confederacy as it contracted.\u003C\/p\u003E\u003Cp\u003EThe school that would become the Georgia Institute of Technology was founded less than 30 years after the picture below, a view from where the Habersham building and Ivan Allen College administrative offices currently stand, was taken.\u003C\/p\u003E\u003Cp\u003E\u003C\/p\u003E\u003Cp\u003ENearly impenetrable fortifications prevented the grounds of the future site of Georgia Tech from becoming a real battlefield. \u0026nbsp;The course of technological innovation was no less impacted by the war. As with any notable military engagement, the war spurred rapid technological change over an extremely short period of less than five years, so much so that it set the standard for later wars. Advances in photographic equipment and processes resulted in compelling imagery from the war.\u003C\/p\u003E\u003Cp\u003EGoodman and Ivan Allen College Dean \u003Ca href=\u0022http:\/\/www.iac.gatech.edu\/faculty-and-staff\/staff\/royster\u0022\u003EJacqueline Royster\u003C\/a\u003E will be collaborating this fall to teach an honors class that aims to explore the experiences of various segments of the population throughout the Civil War. \u003Cstrong\u003EINTA 3803HP: Georgia During the Civil War Era\u003C\/strong\u003E will spur students to look at all categories of people\u2014white, black, men, women, enslaved, free, affluent, poor\u2014 and understand what happened to them over the course of the war.\u003C\/p\u003E","summary":null,"format":"limited_html"}],"field_subtitle":"","field_summary":[{"value":"\u003Cp\u003EDuring the American Civil War, Georgia became the industrial, transportation, and arsenal hub of the Confederacy.
