Tech Prep: The Calculus Advantage

For incoming Tech students, the transition to college is an exciting time: new friends, new living arrangements, and new responsibilities. It is also a time of learning about the new expectations at college. To give incoming first-year students an added advantage in a traditionally difficult subject - calculus - Georgia Tech offers Tech Prep, a program to develop and refine skills for the college classroom and beyond.

The Tech Prep Program is a partnership among Georgia Tech's Center for Academic Success, School of Mathematics, and the Freshman Experience program. This exciting summer program is designed to give entering Tech freshmen an added advantage in successfully completing their introductory calculus courses. Tech Prep is a non-credit, intensive, 10-day residential program that will review fundamental calculus concepts as well as introduce strategies critical for academic success in calculus and other first-year courses. Tech Prep is designed to be an active, social, and relaxed environment with the overall goal of giving new students a head start on their success at Tech.

What is provided?

Meals each day

Program t-shirt

40+ hours of instructional time with Georgia Tech Math Faculty

Participation in Georgia Tech’s Leadership Challenge Course

Peer-led academic support, academic success workshops, and program materials

Introduction to campus life and student living including peer-led team-building activities

Early move-in to student's Fall 2014 housing assignment during program

Other program events and field trips

What's the advantage?
In addition to reviewing the calculus skills that professors at Tech have identified as critical to success in Calculus I (Math 1501) and Calculus II (Math 1502), Tech Prep allows students to become familiar with the campus and all of its resources. Additionally, participants made connections with a current math faculty member and some outstanding peer leaders. Finally, developing friendships and study groups with other incoming first-year students is a great way to get prepared for the first semester at college.

The 2014 Tech Prep program is from August 3rd - August 13th. The cost is $995. Please note that enrollment is limited.
