While proof-of-principle demonstrations of advanced and sophisticated approaches in this field have existed for decades, it is only recently that these tools are being more effectively applied to biomedical applications. The potential to engineer biology to impact human health with the development and production of diagnostics and therapeutics also enables deeper probing of biological principles. Synthetic biology has become a particularly promising and important field that will impact and advance human health and biotechnology.

The Suddath Symposium is held annually to celebrate the life and contribution of F.L. "Bud" Suddath by discussing the latest developments in bioengineering and bioscience. The speakers include leading researchers from around the world, and the research topic changes each year. This highly-interactive symposium has been taking place for over 30 years and is supported by the Institute for Bioengineering and Bioscience at Georgia Tech.

  <status>1</status>  <created>1762440032</created>  <gmt_created>2025-11-06 14:40:32</gmt_created>  <changed>1762440304</changed>  <gmt_changed>2025-11-06 14:45:04</gmt_changed>  <promote>0</promote>  <sticky>0</sticky>  <teaser>"Biomedical Applications of Synthetic Biology" - A one-and-a-half-day symposium.</teaser>  <type>event</type>  <sentence>"Biomedical Applications of Synthetic Biology" - A one-and-a-half-day symposium.</sentence>

"Biomedical Applications of Synthetic Biology" - A one-and-a-half-day symposium.

  <start>2026-03-18T13:00:00-04:00</start>  <end>2026-03-19T17:00:00-04:00</end>  <end_last>2026-03-19T17:00:00-04:00</end_last>  <gmt_start>2026-03-18 17:00:00</gmt_start>  <gmt_end>2026-03-19 21:00:00</gmt_end>  <gmt_end_last>2026-03-19 21:00:00</gmt_end_last>  <times>
      <value>2026-03-18T13:00:00-04:00</value>      <value2>2026-03-19T17:00:00-04:00</value2>      <rrule>  </rrule>      <timezone>America/New_York</timezone>      <timezone_db>America/New_York</timezone_db>      <date_type>datetime</date_type>
  </times>  <gmt_times>
      <value>2026-03-18 01:00:00</value>      <value2>2026-03-19 05:00:00</value2>      <rrule>  </rrule>      <timezone>America/New_York</timezone>      <timezone_db>America/New_York</timezone_db>      <date_type>datetime</date_type>
  </gmt_times>  <phone></phone>

  <location_url>

  </location_url>

  <contact>
Event inquiries - connect@ibb.gatech.edu
</contact>  <fee></fee>  <extras>      </extras>  <location>Petit Biotech Building, 315 Ferst Drive NW, Suddath Seminar Room 1128, Atlanta, GA 30332</location>  <media>      </media>  <hg_media>      </hg_media>  <boilerplate></boilerplate>  <boilerplate_text></boilerplate_text>  <sidebar></sidebar>  <related>

https://research.gatech.edu/bio/suddath-symposium/2026/about

Suddath Symposium

      </related> <files> </files> <groups> <group id="1292">Parker H. Tools to address structural biology problems continue to improve. Native mass spectrometry (nMS) and associated technologies such as ion mobility and variable temperature electrospray ionization are becoming increasingly important components of the structural biology toolbox. When the native mass spectrometry approach is used early or mid-course in a structural characterization project, it can provides answers quickly for small amounts of sample, even when heterogeneity is present. Integration of sample preparation/purification with effective dissociation methods (e.g., surface-induced dissociation, SID), ion mobility, and computational approaches provide a workflow that is enabling in biochemical, synthetic biology, and systems biology approaches. Native MS can determine whether a complex of interest exists in a single or multiple oligomeric states, and surface induced dissociation can provide characterization of topology/inter-subunit connectivity and other structural features. Examples will illustrate the coupling of surface collisions to electron capture charge reduction and charge detection mass spectrometry for the characterization of protein and nucleoprotein complexes, including glycoproteins and adeno-associated virus capsids. Native “complex down” structural proteomics will be illustrated and combines size exclusion chromatography, capillary zone electrophoresis, and surface induced dissociation.

Research
Research in the Wysocki group is categorized into four broad areas:(1) development and implementation of surface-induced dissociation onto commercial time-of-flight, Orbitrap and FT-ICR instruments, (2) development and application of native mass spectrometry-guided structural biology approaches, (3) multi-omics approaches to biomarker discovery, disease diagnosis and prognosis using proteomics and metabolomics methods coupled with genomics and transcriptomics, and (4) determination of peptide and other fragment ion structures by IR action spectroscopy.

Bio
Vicki Wysocki received her BS in Chemistry at Western Kentucky University in 1982 and her PhD in Chemistry at Purdue University in 1987. After doing postdoctoral work at Purdue and at the Naval Research Laboratory, she joined Virginia Commonwealth University as an Assistant Professor in 1990. She was promoted to Associate Professor in 1994. Vicki joined the University of Arizona in 1996 and was promoted to Professor in 2000. Key advances establishing in vivo modeling in murine and rat host has introduced a functional ENS and established methods to provide a humanized immune response. The methods to isolate mesenchyme and endoderm provide a model to study key factors supporting engraftment and provides a potential product for both clinical and research studies. Recent methods to establish a robust tissue for engraftment utilizing a methods we term Confined Culture System provides both the ability to engraft all regionalized tissues and provide a functional ENS without the need to co culture neurospheres. How do natural systems integrate and interpret these cues? And how can we harness this complexity to program new cellular behaviors?
In this talk, I will share our efforts to engineer receptor proteins that enable cells to sense and respond to external inputs, including mechanical forces, bioorthogonal chemistry, and extracellular protease activity. I will outline the molecular logic behind these designs, which build on natural Notch and SynNotch mechanisms, and describe the protein engineering strategies we use to reconfigure these pathways. These synthetic systems allow cells to convert extracellular information into precise intracellular responses, such as transcriptional activation, translational control, and cell-state differentiation.
I will highlight our design of synthetic mechanoreceptors for gauging picoNewton-scale forces at cell-cell interfaces and introduce protease-based circuits that enable logic-gated cellular computation. Time permitting, I will also present our latest tools for visualizing and manipulating mRNA translation at the single-molecule level, offering a real-time view of the Central Dogma. Together, these approaches illustrate how molecular engineering and chemical toolmaking can deepen our understanding of cellular signaling and enable new strategies for probing and programming living systems.

Biography: John Ngo is an Associate Professor of Biomedical Engineering at Boston University and a core member of the Biological Design Center. His research group designs receptors and RNAs that translate defined biophysical and biochemical cues into programmable cell behaviors. Recent work has focused on developing “synthetic mechanobiology” and creating protease-based tools for cellular computation. In parallel, the lab continues to develop new methods for imaging and engineering Central Dogma processes in mammalian cells.
Ngo has held leadership roles in synthetic biology, including serving as co-chair of the 2024 International Mammalian Synthetic Biology Workshop (mSBW). His lab’s contributions have been recognized with the 2025 ACS Synthetic Biology Young Innovator Award. Students from his group have earned numerous honors, including prestigious fellowships, Thesis of the Year, and the College of Engineering’s Earle and Mildred Bailey Memorial Award. Alumni have gone on to prominent positions in academia, industry, entrepreneurship, and nonprofit science.

View Full 2025-2026 Bioengineering Seminar Series Schedule

  <status>1</status>  <created>1744289564</created>  <gmt_created>2025-04-10 12:52:44</gmt_created>  <changed>1763055160</changed>  <gmt_changed>2025-11-13 17:32:40</gmt_changed>  <promote>0</promote>  <sticky>0</sticky>  <teaser>"Engineering Cellular Logic: Mechanoreceptors, Protease Circuits, and Synthetic Central Dogmas" - John Ngo - Boston University</teaser>  <type>event</type>  <sentence>"Engineering Cellular Logic: Mechanoreceptors, Protease Circuits, and Synthetic Central Dogmas" - John Ngo - Boston University</sentence>

Engineering Cellular Logic: Mechanoreceptors, Protease Circuits, and Synthetic Central Dogmas

  <start>2025-12-02T11:00:00-05:00</start>  <end>2025-12-02T12:00:00-05:00</end>  <end_last>2025-12-02T12:00:00-05:00</end_last>  <gmt_start>2025-12-02 16:00:00</gmt_start>  <gmt_end>2025-12-02 17:00:00</gmt_end>  <gmt_end_last>2025-12-02 17:00:00</gmt_end_last>  <times>
      <value>2025-12-02T11:00:00-05:00</value>      <value2>2025-12-02T12:00:00-05:00</value2>      <rrule>  </rrule>      <timezone>America/New_York</timezone>      <timezone_db>America/New_York</timezone_db>      <date_type>datetime</date_type>
  </times>  <gmt_times>
      <value>2025-12-02 11:00:00</value>      <value2>2025-12-02 12:00:00</value2>      <rrule>  </rrule>      <timezone>America/New_York</timezone>      <timezone_db>America/New_York</timezone_db>      <date_type>datetime</date_type>
  </gmt_times>  <phone>404-894-6228</phone>
https://research.gatech.edu/bio
  <location_url>
https://research.gatech.edu/bio

IBB website
  </location_url>

  <contact>
Faculty host: Khalid Salaita
</contact>  <fee></fee>  <extras>      </extras>  <location>Petit Biotechnology Building, 315 Ferst Drive, NW, Suddath Seminar Room 1128, Atlanta, GA 30332</location>  <media>      </media>  <hg_media>      </hg_media>  <boilerplate></boilerplate>  <boilerplate_text></boilerplate_text>  <sidebar></sidebar>  <related>      </related>  <files>      </files>  <groups>          <group id="1292">Parker H.
