288111 event 1396516561 1492118566 <![CDATA[British Consul General to discuss Ukraine and Russia Annexation of Crimea at Tech]]> British Consul General Jeremy Pilmore-Bedford will speak on the crisis in Ukraine and Russia’s annexation of Crimea 7th April in the Clary Theatre at Georgia Institute of Technology.

Pilmore-Bedford’s knowledge of Eastern Europe dates back to 1995-1998, when he served at the British Embassy in Moscow. He later advised London policy makers on the Russian economy. From 2004-2006 he managed the Foreign Commonwealth Office (FCO) in Ukraine, Belarus, Moldova and the Baltic states, and oversaw democratic reform efforts in Ukraine during the Orange Revolution. From 2006- 2009, he served as a FCO policy advisor and Deputy Head of Strategy for Russia.

His reflections will be followed by an event commemorating Ukrainian poet Taras Shevchenko, considered by many to be the founder of modern Ukrainian literature. Shevchenko’s poems will be read in Ukrainian, English, Russian, Spanish, German and Arabic languages. This event is co-organised by Georgia Tech’s Atlanta Slavic Studies Seminar and Russian program.

6 - 7pm  British Consul General will give his reflections on the Crimean Crisis.

7 - 8pm  Bicentennial of Ukranian national poet Taras Shevchenko, with readings in Ukranian,   English, Russian, Spanish, German, and Arabic.

Refreshments will be available.
