Led by the Robert C. Williams Museum of Papermaking, this workshop will explore an early form of cameraless photography known as the cyanotype. Using paper pre-coated with a mixture of chemicals, sunlight, and plants, participants will create their own cyanotypes.

After creating an individual cyanotype, participants will collaborate on a large group piece. 

Participants will also learn about the history of cyanotypes, from the technique's invention and earliest photographic applications to contemporary paper artists who create artwork using this process.

All materials will be provided.

This workshop is open to Georgia Tech students, staff, and faculty.

Led by Dr. John Sears, the seminar follows an AI-assisted innovation from the laboratory through intellectual property protection, validation, financing, and market entry. Participants will gain a practical framework for managing AI-related risks, documenting human contributions, preparing for due diligence, and identifying the assets that create lasting value as innovation moves at AI speed.

On the grounds between the Howey and Mason Buildings, several telescopes are typically set up for viewing, and visitors are also welcome to bring their own telescopes.

About Centennial Summer: Georgia Tech's Olympic Legacy

Thirty years ago, Atlanta welcomed the world for the Centennial Olympic Games, a 17-day event that transformed both the city and the Georgia Tech campus. The Games spurred significant urban renewal and infrastructure projects, elevating Atlanta's profile on the global stage.

At the heart of that transformation was Georgia Tech. Serving as the Olympic Village and host to several competition venues, the Institute renovated Alexander Memorial Coliseum and added seven residence halls, North Avenue Apartments, the Campanile, and a new pool that later became part of the Campus Recreation Center, shaping the student experience for generations.

The Georgia Tech community is invited to revisit these Olympic memories and explore their legacy through the Library's newest exhibit, Centennial Summer: Georgia Tech's Olympic Legacy. The exhibit examines the lasting impact of the 1996 Games through photographs, artifacts, and personal stories.

Centennial Summer: Georgia Tech's Olympic Legacy is on display through mid-November in the Library Exhibit Gallery on the first floor of Price Gilbert. Gallery hours are 9 a.m. – 6 p.m. daily.

Participants in the volume will join Yaszek to explore John P. Moore's rediscovered contributions to science fiction. Through the conversation, attendees will learn more about the thriving Black science-fiction community of the 1930s, the role of historical research and contemporary literary scholarship, and how Georgia Tech students worked to recover and reexamine the lost worlds of Moore's The Martian Trilogy.

About Workday Wednesdays
Workday Wednesdays is a monthly series designed to build early familiarity and confidence with Workday across the University System of Georgia. Held on the last Wednesday of each month, these short, easy-to-digest sessions provide a practical look at key Workday features and processes through guided demonstrations led by program experts.

The Long Now Lecture Series @ retroTECH is part of retroTECH’s effort to create the future by exploring and preserving our technological past.

This event includes a viewing of computing pioneer Douglas Engelbart's demonstration of then-emerging technologies in 1968 at the Association for Computing Machinery and Institute of Electrical and Electronics Engineers conference. The computer mouse, word processing, shared-screen collaboration, and videoconferencing are all in this demo in their first form. 

No need to stay for the entire presentation; drop in for some popcorn and catch part of this historic demonstration.

The session will cover patent classification systems and focus on the following two patent databases: Espacenet (Open access) and PatSnap (Georgia Tech only). We will provide an overview of the database platforms and examine the unique search features of each database. Attendees are encouraged to follow along with tool demonstrations.

Patents provide valuable and cutting-edge information for innovators and researchers. This workshop will begin with a brief introduction to intellectual property and then will focus on patents. The presenter will demonstrate how to conduct preliminary patent searches using publicly accessible patent tools. Attendees will have an opportunity to participate in hands-on learning activities.

This 60-minute workshop will synthesize research on teams to address the fundamentals of effective team communication, common barriers faced by teams and how to overcome them, and behaviors that promote high-quality communication and, ultimately, successful teamwork.

This course module is designed for individuals interested in hands-on training in the fabrication of microfluidic devices using the soft lithography technique. This two day intensive short course will be structured to assume no prior knowledge of the technologies by the participants. The course agenda is evenly divided between laboratory hands-on sessions, including SU-8 master mold creation using photolithography and PDMS device fabrication in the IMS cleanroom, and supporting lectures. The goal for this course is to impart a basic understanding of soft lithography for microfluidic applications as practiced in academia and industry.  

Attendance is open to the general technical community and is not limited to current Georgia Tech students or IMS users. Anyone interested in soft lithography or microfluidics techniques is strongly encouraged to attend this course. The course is suitable for both new and experienced researchers interested in soft lithography techniques and applications. 

A course emphasis will be placed on IMS cleanroom resources, however, the concepts and techniques discussed are applicable to a broad array of research in this field.

“Engineered Nanowires for miRNA-Mediated Control of T Cell Exhaustion” - Shaylyn Grier, Ph.D. student, Ankur Singh, Advisor.

Abstract

Persistent antigen exposure in cancer and chronic infection can drive T cell exhaustion, limiting the long-term effectiveness of adoptive cell therapies. A stem-like subset of exhausted T cells, known as progenitor exhausted T cells (Texprog), is associated with more durable immune responses and improved responses to immunotherapy, but is often present at low and variable levels. Here, we developed a silicon nanowire-based platform to deliver regulatory microRNAs directly into naïve mouse and human T cells, enabling early cellular programming before differentiation. Across mouse and human tumor models, including a three-dimensional diffuse large B-cell lymphoma organoid system, microRNA delivery increased features associated with Texprog, reduced signs of terminal exhaustion, improved cell survival, and maintained T cell function. These findings suggest that nanowire-mediated microRNA delivery can guide T cells toward a more persistent and therapeutically beneficial state, providing a promising strategy to enhance the effectiveness of adoptive T cell therapies.

"Transcriptional Drivers of Impaired B Cell Immunity in Lymphoma Survivors" - Rachel Ringquist, Ph.D., Ankur Singh, Advisor.

Abstract

R-CHOP, a combination of chemotherapy and the anti-CD20 antibody rituximab, is the standard first-line treatment for diffuse large B-cell lymphoma (DLBCL). While highly effective, recent studies have shown that patients treated with R-CHOP exhibit significantly diminished B cell responses even years after treatment concludes. Here, we aimed to identify transcriptional drivers of these diminished responses using an in vitro immune organoid platform that recapitulates B cell activation and maturation within the lymph node microenvironment. We profiled B cells from lymphoma survivors and found that our organoid system stratified donors into low, moderate, and high responders following influenza stimulation. Using single-cell RNA sequencing we identified unique transcriptional programs driving the observed functional differences between low and high responders. Furthermore, through single-cell BCR sequencing, we identified key differences in the clonal B cell responses between high and low responders. These results demonstrate that immune organoids can capture clinically meaningful heterogeneity in post-treatment B cell function, offering a platform for dissecting the mechanisms underlying impaired humoral immunity in lymphoma survivors.

The requirement for high levels of customer service, increasing numbers of SKUs and high labor costs have dramatically increased the complexity of warehouse operations. It is no longer sufficient to manage a warehouse based on a simple, arbitrary “ABC” classification of SKUs, which treats all those in a category as if they were identical. Instead, each decision – such as where to store or where to pick product – must be based on careful engineering and economic analysis. Each SKU must identify its own cheapest, fastest path through the warehouse to the customer and then compete with all the other SKUs for the necessary resources. This results in warehouse operations that are finely tuned to patterns of customer orders and maximally efficient. Learn the concepts necessary to address modern warehouse trade-offs between space and time in optimizing and managing your warehouse.

This workshop is intended to give C and Fortran programmers a hands-on introduction to MPI programming. Both days are compact, to accommodate multiple time zones, but packed with useful information and lab exercises. Attendees will leave with a working knowledge of how to write scalable codes using MPI – the standard programming tool of scalable parallel computing. It will have a hands-on component using the Bridges-2 computing platform at the Pittsburgh Supercomputing Center.

ABSTRACT
Deubiquitylases (DUBs) are a large family of enzymes that remove ubiquitin or ubiquitin chains from substrate proteins. Similar to other components of the UPS, DUBs have been associated with disease and pursued as drug targets. Despite enthusiasm around targeting DUBs both with inhibitors as well as DUBTACs, there remain unanswered fundamental questions around substrates and substrate scope as well as how DUBs work at a detailed mechanistic level. The overarching goal of our lab is to develop chemical tools that can be deployed to study basic function and translational potential of DUBs. Our platform integrates DUB library synthesis, medicinal chemistry, biochemistry, high-throughput screening, chemoproteomics, chemical genomics, structural biology, target validation and cancer biology. I will discuss recent discoveries enabled by our platform including new mechanism-of-action ligands for DUBs and their study in rare disease as well as new insights into DUB interplay with other components of the UPS.

BIO
Sara Buhrlage is an Associate Professor holding joint appointments in the Dana-Farber Cancer Institute department of Cancer Biology and the Harvard Medical School department of Biological Chemistry and Molecular Pharmacology. Buhrlage is a leader in harnessing deubiquitylases (DUBs) as emergent drug targets, where her lab has pioneered new approaches for interrogating DUB function, new insights into the chemical tractability of DUBs, and mapping the therapeutic potential of DUBs in cancer. In addition to research, she is dedicated to graduate education, holding leadership roles in multiple graduate programs and teaching graduate level courses. More recently, she has become involved in biotech and company creation as a scientific founder of Entact Bio. Buhrlage earned a Doctor of Philosophy in organic chemistry from the University of Michigan and completed a post-doctoral fellowship at the Broad Institute.

Paper Craft Fundamentals is a hands-on workshop that introduces participants to essential techniques in paper-based art practices, including cutting, folding, scoring, rolling, weaving, and layering. Through guided demonstrations and self-directed experimentation, participants will develop a foundational understanding of these processes while exploring their potential for variation, combination, and personal expression.

The workshop is inspired by The Craft of Paper: Contemporary Takes on Tradition, an exhibition that examines how artists today are reinterpreting established paper craft techniques within contemporary art and design contexts. By the end of the workshop, they will have developed new technical skills as well as a deeper understanding of how paper-based practices continue to expand within contemporary creative fields.
