Kosal\u003C\/a\u003E shared her experiences in policymaking, advising in the Department of Defense, and her critical issues at the academia-policy nexus last Wednesday, 26 February 2014. Her remarks highlighted recent experiences and observations from serving as a Senior Advisor to the \u003Ca href=\u0022http:\/\/www.army.mil\/leaders\/csa\/\u0022\u003EChief of Staff of the Army\u003C\/a\u003E (CSA) as part of his inaugural \u003Ca href=\u0022http:\/\/csa-strategic-studies-group.hqda.pentagon.mil\/\u0022\u003EStrategic Studies Group\u003C\/a\u003E (SSG) in Washington DC and previous experiences as Science \u0026amp; Technology Advisor in the \u003Ca href=\u0022http:\/\/www.defense.gov\/osd\/\u0022\u003EOffice of the Secretary of Defense\u003C\/a\u003E (OSD) and as liaison to the \u003Ca href=\u0022http:\/\/www.dtra.mil\/\u0022\u003EDefense Threat Reduction Agency\u003C\/a\u003E (DTRA).\u003C\/p\u003E\u003Cp class=\u0022p1\u0022\u003EAs part of her experience with the Army, she led research, analysis, and development of new strategic concepts for design and employment of US ground forces and integration across the joint, interagency, inter-governmental and multi-national environments focusing on challenges for 10-25 years in the future. The SSG works exclusively for the CSA, \u003Ca href=\u0022http:\/\/www.defense.gov\/bios\/biographydetail.aspx?biographyid=323\u0022\u003EGeneral Ray Odierno\u003C\/a\u003E, and conducts independent research and analysis to generate strategic and operational concepts for land forces. She was also involved in advising on policy and capabilities related to responding to current threats, including counter-WMD operations.\u003C\/p\u003E\u003Cp class=\u0022p1\u0022\u003E\u003Cstrong\u003EAbout the speaker:\u003C\/strong\u003E\u003C\/p\u003E\u003Cp class=\u0022p1\u0022\u003EWorking at the intersection of science and security, \u003Ca href=\u0022http:\/\/www.inta.gatech.edu\/people\/faculty\/margaret-e-kosal\u0022\u003EMargaret E. Kosal\u003C\/a\u003E, Ph.D., is among the foremost experts on the weapons of mass destruction and the national security implications of emerging and dual-use technologies; such as nanotechnology, biotechnology, and the cognitive neurosciences. Kosal is also Co-Director of the Program on Emerging Technology and Security, Director of the Program on Biological and Chemical Nonproliferation and Counterterrorism, and Associate Director of the Sam Nunn Security Fellows Program within the Center for International Strategy, Technology, and Policy (CISTP). She earned a doctoral degree in Chemistry from the University of Illinois at Urbana-Champaign (UIUC).
