Klein Publishes Essay in American Literature

LMC Assistant Professor Lauren Klein has published an essay in American Literature, "The Image of Absence: Archival Silence, Data Visualization, and James Hemings."

The essay, part of a special issue on the relationship between American literature and new media, uses the example of James Hemings, Thomas Jefferson's enslaved chef (and Sally Heming's older brother), to show how a set of techniques associated with the digital humanities can help to animate the untold stories of the nation's past. The essay can be found here.
