These studies have been dominated by signaling pathways involving the interaction of microbial signals with the surface of host tissues. I will discuss the emerging recognition that bacterial small RNAs (sRNAs), delivered via outer membrane vesicles (OMVs) are an effective means of communicating symbiont-derived signals to specific internal compartments of epithelial cells. One such sRNA, CsrB, enters the epithelium surrounding the symbiont population, transits to the nucleus and induces the host to glycosylate the mucus surrounding the bacteria, providing them a nutrient source.

  <status>1</status> <created>1789579313</created> <gmt_created>2026-09-16 17:21:53</gmt_created> <changed>1791380696</changed> His research shows that removing invasive aquatic vegetation in West African waterways can reduce schistosomiasis infections while improving water access and agricultural productivity. By converting this vegetation into low-cost livestock feed, compost, and fuel for biodigesters that produce fertilizer and off-grid energy, communities gain profitable incentives to sustain the nature-based solution. Building on these successes, Rohr’s team will expand efforts using climate-smart agriculture, renewable energy, and remote sensing to enhance resilience and equity across Africa and beyond, offering scalable, win-win strategies for global planetary health.

  <status>1</status>  <created>1790170009</created>  <gmt_created>2026-09-23

Genome-wide association studies have transformed our understanding of complex trait genetics, but most statistical methods assume relatively homogeneous ancestry. This leaves admixed individuals, whose genomes are mosaics of ancestry tracts from multiple continental populations, frequently excluded from analysis due to concerns over population stratification. My lab addresses this gap by developing and applying tools leveraging local ancestry: a technique that assigns ancestral origin to each segment of the genome, rather than summarizing ancestry for individuals using a single label.

I will present work spanning three areas. First, a simulation-based framework establishing best practices for local ancestry inference across reference panel compositions, admixture demographics, and genotype discovery approaches. Second, our recently published method Tractor-Mix, a local ancestry-informed mixed model that extends our earlier Tractor framework to enable well-calibrated GWAS in admixed cohorts with relatedness. We demonstrate Tractor-Mix’s performance across multiple large datasets including the UK Biobank, Yale-Penn cohort, and Mexico City Prospective Study, finding novel loci missed by traditional methods and better determining the ancestry driving unique signals. Third, I will describe our application of local ancestry inference across more than 140,000 genomes in gnomAD, which substantially refines ancestry-specific allele frequency estimates with direct implications for clinical variant interpretation. Together, this work illustrates how ancestry-aware statistical methods can improve genetic discovery, risk prediction, and variant interpretation across the full range of human genetic diversity.

  <status>1</status> <created>1789581248</created> <gmt_created>2026-09-16 17:54:08</gmt_created> <changed>1789581395</changed> <gmt_changed>2026-09-16 17:56:35</gmt_changed> <promote>0</promote> <sticky>0</sticky> <teaser>Local Ancestry Inference as a Tool for Genetic Discovery and Variant Interpretation in Admixed Populations</teaser> <type>event</type> <sentence>Local Ancestry Inference as a Tool for Genetic Discovery and Variant Interpretation in Admixed Populations</sentence>

Local Ancestry Inference as a Tool for Genetic Discovery and Variant Interpretation in Admixed Populations

  <start>2027-02-04T11:00:00-05:00</start>  <end>2027-02-04T12:00:00-05:00</end>  <end_last>2027-02-04T12:00:00-05:00</end_last>  <gmt_start>2027-02-04 16:00:00</gmt_start>  <gmt_end>2027-02-04 17:00:00</gmt_end>  <gmt_end_last>2027-02-04 17:00:00</gmt_end_last>  <times>
      <value>2027-02-04T11:00:00-05:00</value>      <value2>2027-02-04T12:00:00-05:00</value2>      <rrule>  </rrule>      <timezone>America/New_York</timezone>      <timezone_db>America/New_York</timezone_db>      <date_type>datetime</date_type>
  </times>  <gmt_times>
      <value>2027-02-04 11:00:00</value>      <value2>2027-02-04 12:00:00</value2>      <rrule>  </rrule>      <timezone>America/New_York</timezone>      <timezone_db>America/New_York</timezone_db>      <date_type>datetime</date_type>
  </gmt_times>  <phone></phone>

  <location_url>

  </location_url>

  <contact>
rbailey74@gatech.edu
</contact>  <fee></fee>  <extras>          <extra>free_food</extra>      </extras>  <location>CHOA EBB 1005</location>  <media>
681178
      </media>  <hg_media>
          <nid>681178</nid>          <type>image</type>
Dr. Elizabeth Atkinson

                      <image_name>Elizabeth_Atkinson.jpg</image_name>            <image_path>/sites/default/files/2026/09/16/Elizabeth_Atkinson.jpg</image_path>            <image_full_path>http://hg.gatech.edu//sites/default/files/2026/09/16/Elizabeth_Atkinson.jpg</image_full_path>            <image_740>http://hg.gatech.edu/sites/default/files/styles/740xx_scale/public/sites/default/files/2026/09/16/Elizabeth_Atkinson.jpg?itok=eTZe0AjX</image_740>            <image_mime>image/jpeg</image_mime>            <image_alt>Dr. Elizabeth Atkinson</image_alt>                              <created>1789581332</created>          <gmt_created>2026-09-16 17:55:32</gmt_created>          <changed>1789581332</changed>          <gmt_changed>2026-09-16 17:55:32</gmt_changed>
      </hg_media>  <boilerplate></boilerplate>  <boilerplate_text></boilerplate_text>  <sidebar></sidebar>  <related>      </related>  <files>      </files>  <groups>          <group id="1275">School of Biological Sciences</group>      </groups>  <categories>
Seminar/Lecture/Colloquium
      </categories>  <event_terms>          <term tid="1795">Seminar/Lecture/Colloquium</term>      </event_terms>  <event_audience>          <term tid="78761">Faculty/Staff</term>          <term tid="177814">Postdoc</term>          <term tid="78771">Public</term>          <term tid="174045">Graduate students</term>          <term tid="78751">Undergraduate students</term>      </event_audience>  <keywords>          <keyword tid="172458">biological sciences</keyword>      </keywords>  <userdata></userdata></node><node id="692624">
The School of Biological Sciences Fall 2026 Seminar Series presents Dr. Vaughn Cooper
  <uid>36927</uid>

Experimental evolution in vivo is a powerful approach to identify the selective pressures shaping bacterial adaptation during infection, yet how host immunity modulates these evolutionary trajectories remains a fundamental gap in infection biology. Applying whole-population genomic sequencing to replicate bacterial populations serially passaged through murine or porcine infection models, we demonstrate that niche-specific selective pressures produce convergent genetic adaptations, including parallel mutations modulating pneumococcal surface charge during colonization and prophage-mediated disruption of global regulators during chronic Pseudomonas aeruginosa wound infection. Host immune status critically shapes these trajectories, as neutropenic hosts broaden mutational pathways to fluoroquinolone resistance in Acinetobacter baumannii while functional immunity constrains the outgrowth of resistant variants. Most recently, we show that Streptococcus pneumoniae subjected to combined antibiotic and immune pressure evolves convergent mutations altering the RNA degradosome that confer broad-spectrum antibiotic tolerance through a bet-hedging transcriptional strategy influenced by host immune state. Together, these studies establish that in vivo experimental evolution provides a mechanistic roadmap for predicting genetic pathways to treatment failure and informing strategies to constrain the evolution of antimicrobial resistance.

  <status>1</status>  <created>1789580204</created>  <gmt_created>2026-09-16 17:36:44</gmt_created>  <changed>1789581092</changed>  <gmt_changed>2026-09-16 17:51:32</gmt_changed>  <promote>0</promote>  <sticky>0</sticky>  <teaser>What Experimental Evolution Can Teach Us About Infection Biology</teaser>  <type>event</type>  <sentence>What Experimental Evolution Can Teach Us About Infection Biology</sentence>

What Experimental Evolution Can Teach Us About Infection Biology

  <start>2026-12-03T11:00:00-05:00</start>  <end>2026-12-03T12:00:00-05:00</end>  <end_last>2026-12-03T12:00:00-05:00</end_last>  <gmt_start>2026-12-03 16:00:00</gmt_start>  <gmt_end>2026-12-03 17:00:00</gmt_end>  <gmt_end_last>2026-12-03 17:00:00</gmt_end_last>  <times>
      <value>2026-12-03T11:00:00-05:00</value>      <value2>2026-12-03T12:00:00-05:00</value2>      <rrule>  </rrule>      <timezone>America/New_York</timezone>      <timezone_db>America/New_York</timezone_db>      <date_type>datetime</date_type>
  </times>  <gmt_times>
      <value>2026-12-03 11:00:00</value>      <value2>2026-12-03 12:00:00</value2>      <rrule>  </rrule>      <timezone>America/New_York</timezone>      <timezone_db>America/New_York</timezone_db>      <date_type>datetime</date_type>
  </gmt_times>  <phone></phone>

  <location_url>

  </location_url>

  <contact>
rbailey74@gatech.edu
</contact>  <fee></fee>  <extras>          <extra>free_food</extra>      </extras>  <location>CHOA EBB 1005</location>  <media>
681176
      </media>  <hg_media>
          <nid>681176</nid>          <type>image</type>
Dr. Vaughn Cooper

                      <image_name>VC.jpg</image_name>            <image_path>/sites/default/files/2026/09/16/VC.jpg</image_path>            <image_full_path>http://hg.gatech.edu//sites/default/files/2026/09/16/VC.jpg</image_full_path>            <image_740>http://hg.gatech.edu/sites/default/files/styles/740xx_scale/public/sites/default/files/2026/09/16/VC.jpg?itok=Yhwz3X0-</image_740>            <image_mime>image/jpeg</image_mime>            <image_alt>Dr. Vaughn Cooper</image_alt>                              <created>1789580613</created>          <gmt_created>2026-09-16 17:43:33</gmt_created>          <changed>1789580613</changed>          <gmt_changed>2026-09-16 17:43:33</gmt_changed>
      </hg_media>  <boilerplate></boilerplate>  <boilerplate_text></boilerplate_text>  <sidebar></sidebar>  <related>      </related>  <files>      </files>  <groups>          <group id="1275">School of Biological Sciences</group>      </groups>  <categories>
Seminar/Lecture/Colloquium
      </categories>  <event_terms>          <term tid="1795">Seminar/Lecture/Colloquium</term>      </event_terms>  <event_audience>          <term tid="78761">Faculty/Staff</term>          <term tid="177814">Postdoc</term>          <term tid="78771">Public</term>          <term tid="174045">Graduate students</term>          <term tid="78751">Undergraduate students</term>      </event_audience>  <keywords>          <keyword tid="172458">biological sciences</keyword>      </keywords>  <userdata></userdata></node><node id="692623">
The School of Biological Sciences Fall 2026 Seminar Series presents Dr. Catherine Dulac
  <uid>36927</uid>

Social interactions are essential for animals to survive, reproduce, raise their young. Over the years, my lab has attempted to decipher the unique characteristics of social recognition: what are the unique cues that trigger distinct social behaviors, what is the nature and identity of social behavior circuits, how is the function of these circuits different in males and females and how are they modulated by the animal physiological status? In this lecture, I will describe our recent work uncovering how discrete, molecularly defined neuronal populations participate in the positive and negative control of the drive for social interactions when animals are isolated or part of a group, and share our new insights into the brain-wide response to social isolation. Finally, social behavior is highly affected in sick animals and I will describe our recent progress in understanding how specific brain circuits and cell types direct adaptive changes in behavior during various forms of sickness in mice, providing a new framework to understand the function and modulation of behavior circuits in health and disease.

  <status>1</status>  <created>1789579633</created>  <gmt_created>2026-09-16 17:27:13</gmt_created>  <changed>1789581058</changed>  <gmt_changed>2026-09-16 17:50:58</gmt_changed>  <promote>0</promote>  <sticky>0</sticky>  <teaser>Neurobiology of Social and Sickness Behavior</teaser>  <type>event</type>  <sentence>Neurobiology of Social and Sickness Behavior</sentence>

Neurobiology of Social and Sickness Behavior

  <start>2026-11-19T11:00:00-05:00</start>  <end>2026-11-19T12:00:00-05:00</end>  <end_last>2026-11-19T12:00:00-05:00</end_last>  <gmt_start>2026-11-19 16:00:00</gmt_start>  <gmt_end>2026-11-19 17:00:00</gmt_end>  <gmt_end_last>2026-11-19 17:00:00</gmt_end_last>  <times>
      <value>2026-11-19T11:00:00-05:00</value>      <value2>2026-11-19T12:00:00-05:00</value2>      <rrule>  </rrule>      <timezone>America/New_York</timezone>      <timezone_db>America/New_York</timezone_db>      <date_type>datetime</date_type>
  </times>  <gmt_times>
      <value>2026-11-19 11:00:00</value>      <value2>2026-11-19 12:00:00</value2>      <rrule>  </rrule>      <timezone>America/New_York</timezone>      <timezone_db>America/New_York</timezone_db>      <date_type>datetime</date_type>
  </gmt_times>  <phone></phone>

  <location_url>

  </location_url>

  <contact>
rbailey74@gatech.edu
</contact>  <fee></fee>  <extras>          <extra>free_food</extra>      </extras>  <location>CHOA EBB 1005</location>  <media>
681175
      </media>  <hg_media>
          <nid>681175</nid>          <type>image</type>
Dr. Catherine Dulac

                      <image_name>Screenshot_16-9-2026_13312_www.bing_.com_.jpeg</image_name>            <image_path>/sites/default/files/2026/09/16/Screenshot_16-9-2026_13312_www.bing_.com_.jpeg</image_path>            <image_full_path>http://hg.gatech.edu//sites/default/files/2026/09/16/Screenshot_16-9-2026_13312_www.bing_.com_.jpeg</image_full_path>            <image_740>http://hg.gatech.edu/sites/default/files/styles/740xx_scale/public/sites/default/files/2026/09/16/Screenshot_16-9-2026_13312_www.bing_.com_.jpeg?itok=oSkoEmfj</image_740>            <image_mime>image/jpeg</image_mime>            <image_alt>Dr. Catherine Dulac</image_alt>                              <created>1789579870</created>          <gmt_created>2026-09-16 17:31:10</gmt_created>          <changed>1789579870</changed>          <gmt_changed>2026-09-16 17:31:10</gmt_changed>
      </hg_media>  <boilerplate></boilerplate>  <boilerplate_text></boilerplate_text>  <sidebar></sidebar>  <related>      </related>  <files>      </files>  <groups>          <group id="1275">School of Biological Sciences</group>      </groups>  <categories>
Seminar/Lecture/Colloquium
      </categories>  <event_terms>          <term tid="1795">Seminar/Lecture/Colloquium</term>      </event_terms>  <event_audience>          <term tid="78761">Faculty/Staff</term>          <term tid="177814">Postdoc</term>          <term tid="78771">Public</term>          <term tid="174045">Graduate students</term>          <term tid="78751">Undergraduate students</term>      </event_audience>  <keywords>          <keyword tid="172458">biological sciences</keyword>      </keywords>  <userdata></userdata></node><node id="692625">
The School of Biological Sciences Spring 2027 Seminar Series presents Dr. Sonal Singhal
  <uid>36927</uid>

Biodiversity begins with divergence, but divergence does not always last. Yet the breadth and implications of this behavior remain elusive across the lifespan. Aberrations in assembly properties can drive the spread of disease pathology within and, in extreme cases, between individuals. Yet how self-assembly differs in youth, age, and disease remains poorly understood, especially in vertebrates. Using ligand-controllable degrons, we created a versatile reporter system to quantify self-assembly and its transmissibility on a proteome-wide scale. Remarkably, both properties were widespread across all domains of life. In the human proteome, self-assembly was strongly enriched among proteins pivotal for early development, stress responses, and intercellular communication. Disease-associated mutations, particularly those linked to neurodegenerative disorders and cancer, frequently altered condensation and templating behaviors, suggesting a direct link to pathogenesis. Using both machine learning and biochemical reconstitution, we leveraged this large dataset to identify new molecular determinants of protein self-assembly into liquids, gels, and solids, as well as their capacity for prion-like templating over long biological timescales. Finally, employing the African turquoise killifish – a model vertebrate with a compressed lifespan – we extended our proteomic analysis to reveal parallels in aging tissues. With advancing age, the prion-like assembly of specific proteins increased substantially. In the same aged tissues, the molecular chaperones that act on these proteins also aggregated concomitantly, highlighting a negative feedback loop that may further impair proteostasis and intensify aggregation. Indeed, a segmental progeria model exhibited increased aggregation only in tissues with signatures of accelerated aging. Collectively, these lines of evidence establish that protein self-assembly and self-templating are far more common in vertebrate proteomes than previously appreciated and suggest that their advantages in youth may be inseparable from costs in aging and disease.

  <status>1</status>  <created>1789578310</created>  <gmt_created>2026-09-16 17:05:10</gmt_created>  <changed>1789580434</changed>  <gmt_changed>2026-09-16 17:40:34</gmt_changed>  <promote>0</promote>  <sticky>0</sticky>  <teaser>Protein-Based Inheritance: Epigenetics Beyond the Chromosome</teaser>  <type>event</type>  <sentence>Protein-Based Inheritance: Epigenetics Beyond the Chromosome</sentence>

Protein-Based Inheritance: Epigenetics Beyond the Chromosome

  <start>2026-10-29T11:00:00-04:00</start>  <end>2026-10-29T12:00:00-04:00</end>  <end_last>2026-10-29T12:00:00-04:00</end_last>  <gmt_start>2026-10-29 15:00:00</gmt_start>  <gmt_end>2026-10-29 16:00:00</gmt_end>  <gmt_end_last>2026-10-29 16:00:00</gmt_end_last>  <times>
      <value>2026-10-29T11:00:00-04:00</value>      <value2>2026-10-29T12:00:00-04:00</value2>      <rrule>  </rrule>      <timezone>America/New_York</timezone>      <timezone_db>America/New_York</timezone_db>      <date_type>datetime</date_type>
  </times>  <gmt_times>
      <value>2026-10-29 11:00:00</value>      <value2>2026-10-29 12:00:00</value2>      <rrule>  </rrule>      <timezone>America/New_York</timezone>      <timezone_db>America/New_York</timezone_db>      <date_type>datetime</date_type>
  </gmt_times>  <phone></phone>

  <location_url>

  </location_url>

  <contact>
rbailey74@gatech.edu
</contact>  <fee></fee>  <extras>      </extras>  <location>CHOA EBB 1005</location>  <media>
681172
      </media>  <hg_media>
          <nid>681172</nid>          <type>image</type>
Image of Dr. Daniel Jarosz

                      <image_name>Daniel-J.jpg</image_name>            <image_path>/sites/default/files/2026/09/16/Daniel-J.jpg</image_path>            <image_full_path>http://hg.gatech.edu//sites/default/files/2026/09/16/Daniel-J.jpg</image_full_path>            <image_740>http://hg.gatech.edu/sites/default/files/styles/740xx_scale/public/sites/default/files/2026/09/16/Daniel-J.jpg?itok=mx0JIyka</image_740>            <image_mime>image/jpeg</image_mime>            <image_alt>Image of Dr. Daniel Jarosz</image_alt>                              <created>1789578487</created>          <gmt_created>2026-09-16 17:08:07</gmt_created>          <changed>1789578487</changed>          <gmt_changed>2026-09-16 17:08:07</gmt_changed>
      </hg_media>  <boilerplate></boilerplate>  <boilerplate_text></boilerplate_text>  <sidebar></sidebar>  <related>      </related>  <files>      </files>  <groups>          <group id="1275">School of Biological Sciences</group>      </groups>  <categories>
Seminar/Lecture/Colloquium
      </categories>  <event_terms>          <term tid="1795">Seminar/Lecture/Colloquium</term>      </event_terms>  <event_audience>          <term tid="78761">Faculty/Staff</term>          <term tid="177814">Postdoc</term>          <term tid="78771">Public</term>          <term tid="174045">Graduate students</term>          <term tid="78751">Undergraduate students</term>      </event_audience>  <keywords>          <keyword tid="172458">biological sciences</keyword>      </keywords>  <userdata></userdata></node><node id="691910">
Fossil Friday
  <uid>36583</uid>

Join the Spatial Ecology and Paleontology Lab each week for Fossil Fridays.

Become a fossil hunter and help discover how ecosystems have changed over time.
