258671 event 1386161258 1492118626 <![CDATA[McKnight Faculty Seminar presents: "Chinese Rap Music and Local Youth Identity in the Age of the Internet" by Dr. Jin Liu]]> Dr. Jin Liu will discuss the emerging trend of Chinese rap songs in mainland China in the age of the Internet and  argue that these songs are characterized by strong social messages, which enable Chinese youth to construct an alternative subcultural space outside that defined by adult culture and hierarchical institutions. The Chinese rap songs are infused with distinctive local knowledge and the sensibilities of a specific place. The songs articulate a distinct musicalized, collective local identity for urban youth, by mobilizing the generic convention of hip-hop in representing one’s ’hood. Dr. Liu will also discuss how her research contributes to the studies of globalization and localization.

The seminar will be held on Tuesday October 29 2013 at 3.30pm in Auditorium 115 in the Swann building.
