Georgia Tech Plans Memorial, Graduate Fellowship in Harrold's Honor

The College of Computing at Georgia Tech this week announced the establishment of a graduate fellowship endowment in honor of Professor Mary Jean Harrold, who passed away last month after a battle with cancer.

In addition, an on-campus memorial service has been planned, allowing those who were not able to attend Harrold’s service in her home state of West Virginia to pay their respects.

Dean Zvi Galil said the fellowship, which will exist in perpetuity, honors a colleague who had earned acclaim as one of the world's leading software engineers and as an advocate for broadening participation in computing. The endowment will grow from donations from friends, colleagues and students.

“This fellowship will serve as an ongoing tribute to someone who served our field, this College and the School of Computer Science so ably,” Galil said. "Just as she did over the course of her distinguished career, this endowment will enable Mary Jean to continue making contributions to computer science and to software engineering in particular."

Those wishing to make a donation should make checks out to The Georgia Tech Foundation and mail them to:

Georgia Tech's College of Computing
Atlanta, GA 30332-0280
Attention: Susan Hutcheson

Memorial services for Harrold will be held at 11 a.m. on Thursday, Nov. 14, at the Georgia Tech Catholic Center, 172 Fourth Street NW. For those friends, faculty members and former students who wish to offer brief reflections at the service, please message Antonette Benford at abenford@cc.gatech.edu.
