The program provides:\u003C\/p\u003E\u003Cul\u003E\u003Cli\u003EA scholarship for a three-semester Certificate of Attendance,\u003C\/li\u003E\u003Cli\u003EBackground in Information Technology through Georgia Tech Professional Education, and\u003C\/li\u003E\u003Cli\u003EThe opportunity for full-time employment with Hewlett Packard. HP can hire program participants who earn their certificate and prove successful as information technology professionals during the work portion of the program.\u003C\/li\u003E\u003C\/ul\u003E\u003Cp\u003EA cohort of 14 students was selected from an applicant pool of close to 100, and members of the inaugural class are now fully immersed in their coursework.\u003C\/p\u003E\u003Cp\u003ECara Appel-Silbaugh, PhD, Associate Dean of Students, and Colleen Riggle, Assistant Dean of Students and Director of Women\u0027s Resource Center, both teach sections in the Workforce Opportunity Services (WOS) program at Georgia Tech.\u0026nbsp;\u003C\/p\u003E\u003Cp\u003EAssociate Dean Cara Appel-Silbaugh teaches \u0022Mentoring I,\u0022 which is designed to help these veteran students transition from the military work force to the civilian work force. The class sessions range from discussing how to work with diverse populations to finding a mentor. Cara finds the group extremely engaging - ready to learn, discuss, and even debate. The courses are 13 weeks long and as week 8 begins, Cara is excited to see a real shift in the group and their learning. \u0022It has been a great experience,\u0022 says Cara. \u0022So great, that I am going to teach \u0027Mentoring II\u0027 which begins immediately after the current course ends.\u0022\u003C\/p\u003E\u003Cp\u003E\u0022The WOS program is a great opportunity for me to continue working with different groups of students,\u0022 remarked Assistant Dean Colleen Riggle of her experience with the WOS program. \u0022I admit, it was a challenge at first to develop an entirely new curriculum on a subject I hadn\u0027t taught formally before in a class setting. But I have thoroughly enjoyed the challenge of learning the different learning styles of the students, while teaching Microsoft Office 2010.\u0022 As the class is being taught and developed for the very first time,\u0026nbsp;Colleen feels that the students are very eager to learn and very flexible with the curriculum. \u0022I love being able to work with this group and learning from each of their very different experiences.\u0022\u003C\/p\u003E","summary":null,"format":"limited_html"}],"field_subtitle":"","field_summary":[{"value":"\u003Cp\u003EWorkforce Opportunity Services (WOS) has launched a new work-study program for training and hiring veterans with service since September 9, 2011.
