Robert Taylor, M.D., Ph.D. (Georgia Institute of Technology, Emory University)\u003Cbr \/\u003E\u003Cbr \/\u003EResolution of acute inflammation is a tightly regulated host response that is essential in ensuring tissue healing and complete return to homeostasis.\u0026nbsp; Traditionally regarded as a passive process, recent studies indicate that resolution of inflammation is an active process that involves activation of specific host responses.\u0026nbsp; It is speculated that the expression of Syndecan-1 (Sdc-1), which is a member of a family of cell surface proteoglycans that can bind and modulate the activity of a diverse group of ligands, is part of the activated host response to tissue injury that contributes to the resolution of inflammation.\u0026nbsp; The objective of this work is to understand how Sdc-1 plays a critical part in an anti-atherogenic program necessary for the clearance of monocyte-derived cells out of the inflamed vascular wall by emigration and\/or efferocytosis, promoting the resolution of inflammation. \u0026nbsp;\u003Cbr \/\u003EDuring the course of this research, we demonstrated that Sdc-1 expression on macrophages is associated with an anti-inflammatory, pro resolution polarization state and enhanced migration.\u0026nbsp; Macrophage Sdc-1 expression was also found to be correlated with CXCR4 expression, both of which can be upregulated in response to efferocytosis.\u0026nbsp; Importantly, both macrophage Sdc-1 and CXCR4 was found to participate in the regulation of macrophage egress from the inflammation site to the draining lymphatics during the resolution of inflammatory response.\u0026nbsp; While the overall mechanisms regulating resolution processes are unknown, our work has managed to identify two components that are involved in the process: macrophage Sdc-1 and macrophage CXCR4 expression.\u0026nbsp; Collectively, these results reinforce the physiological significance of macrophage efferocytosis and macrophage motility as endogenous modulators of the inflammatory response. \u0026nbsp;\u003Cbr \/\u003E\u0026nbsp;\u003Cbr \/\u003E\u003Cbr \/\u003E\u003C\/p\u003E","summary":null,"format":"limited_html"}],"field_subtitle":"","field_summary":[{"value":"\u003Cp\u003EPhD Thesis Defense - Julianty Angsana - \u0022The Role of Syndecan-1 in the Resolution of Chronic Inflammatory Responses\u0022\u003C\/p\u003E","format":"limited_html"}],"field_summary_sentence":[{"value":"\u0022The Role of Syndecan-1 in the Resolution of Chronic Inflammatory Responses\u0022"}],"uid":"27195","created_gmt":"2013-09-03 08:45:48","changed_gmt":"2016-10-08 02:04:34","author":"Colly Mitchell","boilerplate_text":"","field_publication":"","field_article_url":"","field_event_time":{"event_time_start":"2013-09-12T09:30:00-04:00","event_time_end":"2013-09-12T11:30:00-04:00","event_time_end_last":"2013-09-12T11:30:00-04:00","gmt_time_start":"2013-09-12 13:30:00","gmt_time_end":"2013-09-12 15:30:00","gmt_time_end_last":"2013-09-12 15:30:00","rrule":null,"timezone":"America\/New_York"},"extras":[],"groups":[{"id":"65448","name":"Bioengineering Graduate Program"}],"categories":[],"keywords":[{"id":"72671","name":"Julianty Angsana"}],"core_research_areas":[],"news_room_topics":[],"event_categories":[{"id":"1791","name":"Student sponsored"}],"invited_audience":[],"affiliations":[],"classification":[],"areas_of_expertise":[],"news_and_recent_appearances":[],"phone":[],"contact":[{"value":"\u003Cp\u003E\u003Ca href=\u0022mailto:julianty.angsana@gatech.edu\u0022\u003EJulianty Angsana\u003C\/a\u003E\u003C\/p\u003E","format":"limited_html"}],"email":[],"slides":[],"orientation":[],"userdata":""}}}
