Researched, designed and installed by architecture students in conjunction with associate professor Laura Hollengreen’s “Landscapes of War” class, the exhibit is meant to heighten awareness of the landscapes of war, with a particular focus on the Civil War as we honor its sesquicentennial anniversary. Surface and Depth also showcases the sensibility of nascent architects in the study of cultural and political landscapes and their skills in creating stimulating, memorable environments.

The exhibition is presented in two parts. On one side is the objective history of weaponry and defensive fortifications as it played out in Atlanta, particularly the northwestern suburbs that occupied what is now the Georgia Tech campus. On the other side is a more affective and less localized presentation of combatant experience on the battlefield. Together, this material will serve as the seed of a larger exhibition to be held next fall in conjunction with the surrender of Atlanta to Union forces.

The exhibit is free and open to the public.
